When it was gigantic back then, there's the wow factor. There's the omg this is the biggest piece of fish on a rice I had ever seen! I felt like the price was justified, I was wowed. But now, the pieces were noticeably smaller. The price I don't think quite justifies anymore, seeing city prices but not in the city. The attention to detail also felt different. Did the chef change? Ie baby rolls, why are they all different heights now? The Tuna nigiri it's breaking apart already? Service tonight was also a bit lacking compared to before, the servers were constantly hovering in kitchen. The waitress was great but it's clear she had too much on as she's being pulled left right and centre. At one point, the gentleman (who's probably the owner) acknowledged our request for tea refill to subsequently have forgotten. Just small details I noticed have changed vs before. Sushi Tengoku has always got a special place in my heart. But tonight, I felt like that special feeling disappeared. Now it felt like just another sushi place, but expensive. But anyway. Those huge slices of fresh tuna and salmon? $2.50 each...you really can't beat that anywhere. The karaage was pretty good bang for your buck, as was the soft shell crab roll. That roll was massive as you can see, but the picture doesn't do it justice. I wouldn't call this a date place unless you've been dating someone a while...but it's good for a casual dinner or group dinner and takeaway.

We sat at the sushi train, which is a concept that I like in theory. However, in this case, we were the only two people sitting at the sushi train and it was completely full of sushi when we arrived. Hence, no new sushi was being prepared and who knows how long it had been since it was prepared. You really need a critical mass of diners for the sushi train concept to work. Furthermore, their website says that all items on the sushi train are 1/2 off after 8:30 (great!), BUT only for take-away (not mentioned on the website). So, if you're sitting there in an empty restaurant, you can pay full price for something they're about to throw away because they're closing soon and no customers are coming -- seems like a pretty stupid policy. So stupid, in fact, that I contemplated giving this place two stars, but like I said, the food was actually pretty good. This diner will probably never be returning, however.

For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

I only wish less people knew how good this place is as sometimes the queue is pretty long.

On my most recent visit, Sushizilla has gone downhill. As much as I love the burnt blow torch flavours, the sushi train was empty, the same dishes were being rotated, andit didn't look fresh. Most of all, there was a general feeling that the place was a little tired and run down (even though the furnishings are new). They need to revamp their vibe to attract more customers through the door. Otherwise I fear that I'll no longer be able to have my blow torched sushi for much longer.

The positives: The food in the restaurant downstairs was reasonably priced. But I'm not sure if that's just because I'm doing the conversion to USD from Australian Dollars? Pretty decent sized portions for the prices. As for flavors I can't complain. My roll was good. My pork gyoza was nice and crisp with a good sauce. But the star was the MB4 Australian Wagyu steak. As I had not booked for lunch, the waiter struggled to find us a table for three. I asked if we could sit at the empty sushi bar but was told no. Eventually, the waiter said he would get the manager to try to sort something out for us which was nice of him. When the manager finally came out, she said we could sit at the sushi bar provided we only ordered from the bento box menu as the sushi chef was too busy. Interesting, I thought we couldn't sit at the sushi bar? And what's with not being able to order anything else apart from the Bento box menu because the sushi chef is too busy preparing orders? Hmmm... isn't that kind of the business and expectation that the sushi chef would be busy making/preparing sushi/sashimi? Anyway, we ordered our Bento boxes and they were nicely presented. But I think for $40 a bento box and the name Azuma, I was kind of expecting more in terms of quality and quantity. The tempura was not fantastic. It wasn't that light crispy tempura I was expecting. I can definitely get much better tempura at less fancy Japanese restaurants. There was no white radish with the tempura sauce which was disappointing and not not very traditional. The wagyu beef was quite tough and chewy. Didn't seem very wagyu to me. On the positive, the sashimi served were good in terms of freshness. Also, looking at the sushi bar, they didn't seem to have 'Uni' (sea urchins) at all. Overall, I had a higher expectation from Azuma given the price and what Azuma claims itself to be. According to the 'About Azuma' page, it says Kimitaka Azuma's "passion is to deliver new and dynamic Japanese cuisine that is both traditional and innovative drives him to expand his business, in the hope that all Sydneysiders will be able to enjoy the experience of 'real' Japan." Service is friendly as it has always been and also quite attentive. The sashimi is fresh and there's a nice selection on its platter. The main staple we get here though, for lunch is usually the business lunch specials which are such good value. We get half don and half noodle, which is great for those who are indecisive - you can get the best of both worlds! The don we get is usually one with the chicken katsu and the noodle is the ramen or the udon. Don't expect too much from the ramen and you won't be disappointed. It's not their specialty here so it's not got that thick pork bone soup style to it but it's tasty nonetheless. Bento boxes are also good value with a miso soup and rice as well as tea, you'll be wanting a siesta afterwards! Everything is always consistently cooked well and prepared well. The salads are fresh and the karaage chicken is nice and crispy (beats KFC any day!). Our go to bento is usually one with the karaage. Also in the bento is sashimi, and a spring roll or gyoza if you get the deluxe versions. The karaage comes as a side in the deluxe version! The menu is varied and there's so much to choose from. We've had most things and never disappointed. The place has that Japanese dining bar feel to it because it is so small with about seating inside for 25 maybe? but it has seating outside too. So I searched for a place with good reviews and seek and thou shalt find. I was lucky that we had somewhere to be and went at 5:30 because by about 6pm there was a line up. The items were tasty. Best eggplant I've had in a while. I also like the chicken roll, miso soup and well the general goodness.
