What sets this apart from other resorts in the area are 2 things. 1. The family and kid oriented amenities. Paddle boats, zip line, paddle boards, bikes, water tramp, canoes, jungle gym, kayaks, bags, horse shoes.... And the list goes on. All of these are FREE to use!!! 2. The hospitality is wonderful. The campground has been in the family for several generations and they are always available to help you and lend something to you should you have left something at home.... Like we do often.... The blonde haired waitress made us feel really uncomfortable. Asked a question about docking the boat and getting drinks/food and we were met with a stare down. Easily can say that was one of the most awkward moments I've had in my entire life. We were trying to be nice and bring our cups up to the bar while we were leaving and she looked at us like we were stupid and as we were walking out she asked the other waitress if we had paid as if we were dining and dashing. The visitor center has an area full of informational displays, a small gift shop, and washrooms. Outside in the back is a small ethnobotanical garden with a wide variety of plants significant to the indigenous Ojibwe people. I learned a good deal about the native plants that have been cultivated for food, ceremonies and housing materials for centuries. However, if you do decide to stroll around, make sure you have a generous amount of mosquito repellent. I must have missed a spot on my back as I got at least three mosquito bites there. Yikes! Once you're on the boat tour in the middle of the lake, the bugs melt away as the boat zooms around. I saw a lot of beautiful scenery, but not a lot of animals. It was still good though, as Joe, one the the NPS rangers, was absolutely hilarious!

Also we had a canoe rented for the day and were excited to see the park that way, but it was cancelled due to wind. The day felt like a big let down so we hiked a bit on the Blind Ash Bay trail. They were more than accommodating, helpful, friendly and full of knowledge about Pelican Lake and the surrounding areas. I came with my boyfriends family who have been fishing for 30+ years. These past four years I fish regularly and really like it...but now I get it-and I love it. The Lake will make you a fisherman. The sun is up at 5a and doesn't set until almost 10p on some nights. When it's too hot try out the putting (it's pretty challenging and well maintained) They have Frisbee Golf, a bike boat, canoes and some great places to sit, relax and enjoy the view and sounds of Orr, MN. I was very comfortable and felt very safe. If you need anything town is just 15 minutes away. Each cabin has a BBQ and some come with a dock (we were lucky ours had one) I wish I had more time than a week. I just went into the lodge for the first time right before we left and it was amazing. THIS ISN'T IT** I have worked…read morein hospitality for many years, most of the those years being a General Manager, when I tell you this is the worst place to stay I am not kidding. I've seen some pretty harsh hotels/motels/resorts and I would choose them before booking a cabin with the new owners of Trails End. My husband's family has been going to Orr for decades as they have family in the area! My inlaws traveled up there before my husband was born and continued on for the last 43 years! About 15 years ago, they made the switch to Trails End and fell in love immediately. They spent 8 days a year there every.single.year up until this year. We have never had any problems with the prior owner, our family is huge, we rent 5 of the 9 cabins for a total of 21 people. We've never had complaints from anyone staying at the resort or the prior owners, until last year. 3 months after checking out they contacted my mother in law by letter stating they were charging us for different problems in all our cabins, accused one family of stealing towels and blamed my inlaws for leaving blood from meat on the bottom of the fridge. Non of this true of course as we would never do that, we had never done it in the past why now just last year? Are the cabins clean, yes. Are the grounds nice, yes! However, the owners are scam artists trying to stay afloat in a business they have no right running. They are not trustworthy on what they say. They have booked other people in our cabins even though we have deposits. They told my sister in law a cabin was available and then when she got there and double check it suddenly wasn't available. They do not know how to a run a business. Please do not spend your money here if your looking for a nice resort then check out Myrtle Lake Resort right down the road! Those owners will treat you like family!

The only reason why I'm giving this place two stars is because of the employees are friendly and…read morehelpful and the food is good. The cabins are comfortable. Now here is the bad. The prices are not as quoted because they add all kinds of extra hidden charges to everything. This was our third fishing lodge we have been to and it never experienced this at any place else before. We rented a boat for 2 days and upon check out the next morning we found out there was a charge for over $200 for damage to the motor that we did not do. The owner said one kind of motor damage and the dock worker said a prop was chipped. It never happened I was in the boat for 2 days we never hit anything. We were not informed the guide service would not include gas or the $7 a dozen minnows we used or the $7 box of worms we didn't even know the guide had. No beverages were furnished at all which is the first I have ever experienced on any guided boat Trip. Upon check out we were charged $145 service fee. Apparently that includes tips for non-tipped workers the problem is we tipped everybody out of our own pockets. We even tip the cook and the dock workers. That service fee also includes firewood which I'll be damned I ain't using firewood in June. It also included upkeep of The kayaks and the canoes which we didn't even use or didn't even see for that matter. As friendly as the staff was the ownership was just as unfriendly. They treated us like ghosts like we didn't exist. It would have been nice to have been acknowledged. They have an attitude like don't speak unless you're spoken to. I was at the bar trying to get a drink and couldn't even get acknowledged. That was by the owner's daughter. Before you go to Nelson's you better get a quote on every single penny. Because they will give you all kinds of hidden charges.

All but two sites are back in. The guests are friendly. There is no store on site except for clothing. Ice and firewood can be purchased. Sites are large. Bring your mosquito repellent. With the…read morecurrent wildfire conditions the staff and volunteers were extra busy with questions and phone calls but they never seemed overwhelmed and we felt very safe while visiting. The interns were all very knowledgable and I really like that they each give an educational talk about topics that interest them and relate to the bears in different ways. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. The gift shop is great too, lots to pick from and it is all very reasonable priced. We would love to go back someday!
