IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Since my last posting, an enormous amount of new information has come to light about the history and administration of Ecclesia Houston pastored by Chris Seay.
In summary, a group of a dozen concerned members came together including those with professional legal, financial, and pastoral backgrounds to ascertain the truth in the financial, cultural, and leadership practices over the life of this church. Our efforts began after alarming financial data was discovered. Most notably, there was undisclosed income of $12.5M by TXDoT for the sale of the Meridian nightclub property purchased only 3 years prior in 2014 for $3.75M. 4 months after this influx of tax-payer money, Pastor Seay announced a 3-wk "Debt-Free campaign" from the pulpit that had not been approved or discussed with the Board. 5 months later the church purchased a luxury beachfront condo in Galveston for $585k. Its cost and supposed purpose were not disclosed to church members or most staff until after our discovery.
Over the course of this year, more than 24 current and former staff, pastors, and Board members were interviewed. The experiences were overwhelmingly disturbing in terms of the hostile work environment, leadership problems, poor decision-making, both total absence and total control by Pastor Seay, and, at a minimum, irresponsible financial practices. As one Board member lamented, "we created the beast. We allowed him [Seay] to get away with too much." Some staff were offered money or given gifts in exchange for their silence or simply required to sign an NDA. Most alarming, we learned that Pastor Seay committed sexual misconduct in 2005 with a young woman under the pretext of a counseling relationship while living in his home. After she reported him, he went on a "Disciplinary Furlough" for 3 mo then returned to full-time pastoring. No charges were brought against him although the Texas Penal Code for clergy required the church to report him to authorities. He continued to contact and harass her for many years.
Our communications included a total of 4 emails sent to small group leaders. The first email shared our initial concerns and questions. The remaining emails were sent throughout the year with updates on our progress, communications with leadership, and future plans.
The Email signers were called "terrorists" and "divisive" by executive staff and Board members. A Board member stated at the 2018 staff Christmas party that "everything" in the emails was a lie. One of us was handed a notice in-person recommending he leave the church.
The second effort of communications included a formal Memo sent to the Board detailing concerns and recommendations for improvement. The Board responded over email saying decisively that it was "impossible" to meet in person and the matter was closed. They did not show their work or detail what was investigated. A handful of positive changes were stated to have been made (we learned later that Seay is finally no longer a voting member of the Board), but we do not know if the rest was enforced. Nonetheless, we were unanimous in finding the response wholly insufficient and even insulting for the amount of effort and professional quality work that was offered.
It should also be noted there are 5 of 7 Board members with conflicts of interest. 2 new members simply appeared on the website in May with no introduction to church members. No Board members were voted on and all were hand-picked by Pastor Seay. The church website now has a page with their names, faces, and a bio as well as a shared email account for them. You will find a copy of the audits/internal reviews that were delayed (12 internal control deficiencies are not mentioned) posted online Jan 1, 2019. All of this is a direct result of our inquiry and their effort to be more transparent. We considered this an early success and yet none of these documents are a true representation of practices or answer the harder & more detailed questions about cash flow.
Now, after this disheartening and exhausting process the 12 of us no longer attend Ecclesia. At least 11 staff have quit or been fired during this time. The overriding concern by executive leadership towards staff during this season was loyalty. Not truth or humility, but loyalty to Pastor Seay and the status quo.
In our research to understand the nature of church/spiritual abuse and mismanagement we compiled a Resource list. We find striking similarities in the leadership characteristics and responses between the churches listed and Ecclesia Houston.
