Worked out here before covid and it was great. Great atmosphere, great teaching, and a great price.

We have cross trained at 10 different academies in Oregon and Washington. Five Rings is exactly what our boys needed! Their 2 main professors are black belts and give such detailed technical advice explaining the why behind the what. They also teach self control and slowing the game down so students can pay attention to the little details that make them better opponents and better training partners. There is a path for everyone at Five Rings whether you want to learn the art of Jiu Jitsu, learn self defense, attain more self confidence or compete. Get to a class!

I trained at Five Rings for 3 years, and by the time I left the city, I had several close friends that I remain in contact with today. The quality of instruction is incredible. Coach Tom is quite obviously obsessed and does a fantastic job breaking down techniques in easily digestible, teachable steps. Not only are the professors incredible, but the people are amazing and SO FRIENDLY. I developed several close friendships with the people at this gym. I relocated to Houston, TX about two years ago, and I still remain in constant contact with several of my former training partners. If you're in Portland and looking for a place to drop in, I recommend it. We had several folks drop in while I was training, and we always welcomed them with open arms. If you're in Portland and looking for a place to start your jiu Jitsu journey...look no further. I have trained at several gyms and have yet to find a place that can replicate five ring's family atmosphere and tight-knit community.

He is eager to go to class each week and gives 100% because he feels positively motivated. From what I can see, he has made enormous progress after just a few sessions, and it has overflowed into his behavior at home. Coach David also takes time to give bits of real-world guidance that my son and I are able to discuss on the way home. It also looks really fun! Sometimes I want to jump in! I recommend Portland Academy of Self Defense to people of all ages who are interested in self-defense or just great exercise in a positive, accepting environment.

Attended a few training sessions at their much reduced "teaser" rate. They REALLY pressure you to sign up for an annual, pretty non-breakable contract. Their monthly contract cost is pretty high considering that 99% of the training consists of exercises that I can do all by myself... such as running around the perimeter of the gym, playing jump rope, pushups, situps and so on. I signed up for this training because I wanted to learn something about Korean martial arts but that training was never forthcoming. Almost all of the students are young kids. Some VERY young. I was easily twice as old as the next oldest student. If you're a parent and don't mind paying $100/mo to send your kid to a PE-oriented day care center, then this could be the place for you. But if you are an adult looking for intensive martial arts training you may well find the curriculum here disappointing. Bottom line was that I felt I was paying a LOT of $$$ for "training" that just wasn't worth the fee. If all someone wants is an intensive PE workout, there are gyms around that charge in the $10-$15 per month range for that sort of service. I would have given this place one star except that it probably is a good venue for kids who have parents with unlimited funds.

It includes Brazilian music and all members are part of the activity even if they are not the 2 individuals "sparring" at the moment. The studio has just moved to a new location and is still working on its storefront but my 11 year old is now approaching year 3 in this group and he has learned so much. He started in a kids-only class (pre-Covid) and my then 5 year old started too. When Covid hit, Cavaleiro, the instructor moved things to Zoom and my son carried on (it was too much for my 5 year old). Now that they're back in studio, he is participating in advanced classes. Covid protocols are in place--all students practice masked. My son started not knowing how to do a cartwheel and now does aerial flips! The physical part is astounding but the music and singing (and learning Portugese while doing it) make it an all-around great activity. Cavaleiro and the other students are very welcoming to new students--helping include and guide them through the basics so they quickly become part of the group. Cavaleiro is super patient and quick to read his students' needs and reminds them that they're all on a learning journey.

Capoeira Oregon offers classes for kids and adults at all level of ability. Capoeira is a unique sport in that it blends dance like movement and rhythm with ground-level and high acrobatics. Together with powerful kicks and dynamic take-downs, capoeira is a complete offense and defense that is both effective and beautiful. While much of our movement must be extensively trained to achieve the best results, capoeira is meant to be a personal expression making it possible for players of all ages and skill levels to interact inside the "Roda", the circle where the game of capoeira is played. Our "sparring" is considered a game where two players match combat skills, show-off acro moves, or simply interact like two gears meshing in a fine-tuned engine. This sport is for anyone with the desire to learn it. The basic capoeira starts at very simple levels. Body of Brazil Capoeira takes each student as they are and helps form them into successful capoeiristas. We serve Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake Oswego and all Portland's westside communities. We are located on Beaverton-Hillsday hwy in Beaverton near Bi-mart, Portland Music, Uwajimaya, Home Deport, etc .
