Adriana is awesome! She was recommended to me by my sister, whose hair is always cute and stylish (thanks to Adriana). I had been growing my hair out for years, and finally came to the realization that I had only worn it down once throughout the entire year. It was time for a change. I explained to her my situation - my hair is randomly wavy-ish; I wanted to keep the length, but it was too heavy and boring; I was open to layers but not necessarily bangs... basically, I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted, but she figured it out, and I love it! My friends, family and associates have all complimented me on my new style - some not noticing exactly what was different, just that I looked younger! I've been going to Adrianna for about 2 years now. Even after I moved out of Berkeley, I could not find myself to go to a different salon. There's just a certain comfort of not wanting to deviate from what you know is already good. Adrianna is quirky, sweet, personable, and most of all does a great job with my cuts. I've tried other stylists at Eclipxe - they just don't work for me so I've continued with Adrianna. She really listens to what you want and also provides suggestions catered to your hair type. She is great with short styles and textures. I think I asked her once if she uses a razor for texturing; she doesn't like to use them but did because I asked for it. My haircuts with her always turn out great if you really specify what you want and talk it over thoroughly. I always walk out happy with such bang for your buck. The place itself is by no means high-end or modern, but the times I have gone I have seen no evidence of an unsanitary environment. Great products -- they only use Aveda. I have been in search of great hair stylist always. After reading many great reviews, I made my appointment with Japanese stylist for hair cut. I arrived there on time. When I arrived there, she was servicing to other client. She told me to wait a bit. Then guess what, she made me to wait 30 min. Yes, 30 min....who expects to wait that long with appointment? I've been going to Eclipxe for almost two years now and must say - it truly is a great bang for your buck! I love Adrianna! She helped me battle my fear of bangs - this is huge! She gave me the best looking bangs I've ever had, she listened to all my concerns and truly gave me what was best for my hair, not just any old cut. She made me feel comfortable too, which I found at my old salon, was a luxury. I hate stylists whose scissors seem to have a mind of their own. It happened again--my tastes exceeded my pocketbook and suddenly I couldn't afford to get regular haircuts at my salon of choice. The quest for a new salon began again as I interrogated friends with similar hair types. A couple of weeks ago--when the ends of my hair got to that point of crispiness that no amount of washing and styling can hide--I noticed that my friend, ayahthetiger (her review is muy helpful) also has thick, wavy hair. And even though it had been months since her last cut, it still looked great. The interrogation began and she coughed up her secret--Adrianna at Eclipxe. I could have made a same-day appointment if my schedule weren't so crazy, but I was happy to wait if it meant having a great cut. And I was not disappointed. Adrianna examined my hair closely before shampooing and listened carefully to what I wanted, particularly the part about keeping sculpting shears and razors far away from my head. After shampooing, she noted that my hair was wavier than she'd realized and adjusted her plan of attack to accommodate the waves. The results are beautiful! My hair bounces again, it looks great down or up in a ponytail, and it's not a tangled, crispy mess anymore. Adrianna is also very sweet and personable, so I felt comfortable sitting there for a little bit while she made me look gorgeous. The best part is that the cut and shampoo were only $45. True, the salon is somewhat cluttered (it wasn't particularly unsanitary when I went in, as others have claimed) and no one's going to offer you a glass of wine while you wait. But the staff is polite, Adrianna is great at what she does, and if I want a glass of wine, I'll take my stunning tresses elsewhere and enjoy one after I'm done at Eclipxe. read more

Sumie! When I moved out to the east bay I searched for months to find a good stylist or a cutting stylist or a razor master. Then I found eclipxe and sumie! I spoke to her before she started cutting my hair explaining how I like it and what I didn't like. She then proceeded to go to town on it. She used this awesome technique with razor blades! Gave my hair this awesome texture. I don't usually talk to people when they cut my hair but sumie and I yap it up. Her sense of humor is great. Me being an English speaking part Japanese kid she has taken the time to teach me some Japanese words. She's very accommodating and very good. I've been going to her for about a year now. I absolutely love this place! The stylists are like family, most of them have worked together for years in other salons. Cool atmosphere and location; and excellent, friendly service. I've been getting my hair done by Kimberly for about 7 years now, and I get compliments on my hair everywhere I go. She also teaches you how to maintain it and keep making it look great. I'll go for months until another haircut or color, and people will ask me if I just got my hair done. One of my pet peeves is getting your hair done, leaving the salon liking the outcome, then going home and not having your hair look as good because you don't know how to style it. Kimberly gives you very helpful tips to help you feel good all the time. I haven't gotten my hair done by the other stylists, but I am always impressed with the way their clients look when I'm there. And they're all so nice and welcoming. Another big plus are the Aveda products. These really make a HUGE difference in maintaining your style/color. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ECLIPXE!!! read more

Pedro really is amazing at what he does. He's also a nice person to talk to so getting a haircut isn't awkward. There was about a six month respite between visits, and he still remembered me as well as the conversation we had the last time I visited. His conversations reflect the way he works on hair. He puts a lot of effort into making sure that when you walk out of the salon, you look good. He's very patient when trying to work on your suggestions. If you know what you want, and are able to communicate it verbally/ through pantomime/ or with a picture... she can make wonders happen. -The catch is that you have to know what you want. (You probably shouldn't be asking someone else to make drastic cuts to your hair if you don't what you want anyhow.) Today was my first time coming here. I made a last minute appointment and they scheduled me asap. I had little hope that the accidental bald spots could be fixed.. but by just talking to me, Adrianna gave me the most wonderful haircut ever (all the while making me feel better about going from really long to really short). I'm very pleased with my experience today at Eclipxe. It was my first time coming here and T and I made a last minute appointment to have both our hair colored. Showed up and was promptly seated. Pedro colored my hair first and took the time to find out exactly what I wanted. I suggested a few colors and Pedro made a few suggestions of his own - what would work best with my type of hair and what would be easier for upkeep and more fade resistant. Pedro's incredibly professional - he is a keen conversationalist and doesn't skip a beat while doing my hair. After all is said in done, he even fixed my butchered haircut and made sure I was completely satisfied with my do. And for $95 + tips? Done deal! I got my hair cut by Sumie. She'll tell you like it is. At first I didn't know how to take it. Everything she said was all true. It was not sugar-coated but she didn't mean bad. It's kind of like tough love. I was that person who wanted to try something different but I walked in there already deciding that it was not going to look good on me. Well, she is not going to convince you to get a new style. You have to have the courage first and show your stylist that you are open minded. It's only hair after all, and if I don't' like it, it'll grow back. Also, nobody really cares about how your hair looks other than yourself. I got out of there pleasantly surprised. I have been to Kimberly at Eclipxe for the past four years, and I have been very happy. (Though I recently moved, and thus will no longer be going to her regularly...) Kimberly is a private contractor, and only takes cash, which was the only problem I have ever run into. But she is very affordable, at $40 (+ tip). She has been there for me when I wanted a drastic short haircut (short for me-- above the shoulder) and it turned out great. She has taken care of all my highlights (and persuaded me to go darker than what I had wanted, which was probably the best advice ever). And of course, she has been great with all my trims, long layer requests, etc! I have never been disappointed with Kimberly. She is really friendly and her young son, who can sometimes be seen at the salon, is sooo adorable. I love Eclipxe in general, too, because of the AVEDA products they use. So after doing research and by that, I mean reading all the reviews that are posted on here about this particular salon, I decided to pick this as my first choice to get my haircut. As a guy, I thoroughly read the reviews from men and saw that Sumie and Maria were the top two stylists. I am very choosy when it comes to people cutting my hair. Since I left home, I decided to just grow my hair but got tired of that after awhile. Bottom line, I called and made my appointment. I tried to get Maria since she had more reviews but she was booked and I really needed a haircut so I went with Sumie, my next choice. I figured she was Asian which she is. Went to the salon and it was pretty cool. I knew Sumie once I walked in since she was the only Asian person there. I told her what I wanted and she said that I had really think hair. I showed her a picture of how I wanted my hair to look like. Pretty much I said, whatever she could do. I wanted a stylish yet still professional look. She started razoring my hair and did her thing. I liked it at first but then afterwards I didn't. I am weird like that. Although, after a few days I really didn't like it. She pretty much just gave me a bowl cut which I could have had my mom do. The horror years which I was reliving. Anyways, I still gave this salon three stars because I think that they are pretty mediocre with their salon and stylists. It has been about a month or two now and have just made my next appointment at Keter so I will update my review after and not wait to write one. read more

I have been looking for a regular stylist for years. Usually I try out a new place and I'm just not wowed with the experience, so I move on to the next. This time, Eclipxe was the next. I hadn't had a hair cut for six months and needed one NOW, so I was pleased when they were able to fit me in for a cut just a few hours after I called. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the stylists are all warm and friendly, and Pedro did a great job talking through the different options with me to help ensure that I was making the right choice (I've been growing my hair out for a while - ie being lazy and not getting it cut - and since it's been so unkempt for a while, it was driving me crazy and I was thinking about chopping it all off, but he talked me back from the ledge). Once we decided to just clean it up a little bit and keep the length, he did a great job giving me a cut that has some shape and body without being any work to maintain (as you may have guessed by now, hair upkeep is not my strong point). My hair is quite fine and relatively easy to cut, so some stylists definitely give me the short shrift, but Pedro was very detail-oriented and really took his time. And the price ($45 - cash only for first-time customers) was pretty decent too. Overall, a good enough experience that I'm definitely considering coming back. read more

I've been going to Eclipxe for the last few years, and always have Brittany style my curly hair. She always does a great job, I rely on her completely to know what works best with my curl type, and how to layer my hair so that my curls fall down instead of sticking out. I visited the salon on a Saturday, there were two stylists and two clients inside. Everyone was spaced out appropriately and wore masks the entire time. Before entering, I was asked a series of screening questions in regards to COVID, and my temperature was taken to ensure a safe workspace. Got my hair cut by Michi. In the past I've mostly cut my own hair (heh) and kept it pretty long, but I wanted a drastic length change/to be a grown up and pay for a real haircut. Michi's first move was putting my hair in a rubber band and chopping it off! Terrifying, but I already trusted her because before then she had looked repeatedly at the photos I showed her of my desired cut and asked me several questions to make sure she understood what I wanted. Our appointment ran a bit past an hour but she kept going back when I wanted a little more cut off or styled. She even made a few last touches after I had paid. Just got my hair cut by Sumie and I couldn't be happier. Probably one of the best haircuts of my life. I've been looking for a good mid-range salon ever since I moved to Berkeley and I think I've finally found one. Granted the atmosphere isn't quite as nice as some of the other salons in the area, but really, who cares whether they have cool artwork or offer you sparkling water when you arrive if your haircut is horribly overpriced. My only true gripe with this place is that they only accept cash, and being the sort of guy who never has a lot of cash on him, I had to make a special trip to an ATM. Guys beware: the price was a bit high for a men's cut ($45 before tip), but that's a lot less than the other "nice" salons in the area. Also, in my experience, there's a huge difference between a $15 haircut and a $50 dollar haircut. read more

Sumie is cool. I had been roaming the earth with terrible hair for a long time after my OG MVP hair stylist from Japan Center Beauty Clinic in Japantown moved back to Japan like 5-8 years ago. I tried others at JCBC and Glam-Up but it was at best bland and at worst kind of bad, and really expensive. I became disenchanted with the whole Japantown circuit and the hassle it took to get there anyway. I tried cutting my own hair for awhile. I tried not cutting my hair at all for awhile. All with lackluster results (but at least I wasn't paying for it). Anyway, I found Sumie about two years ago and I've been going to her since. The price and location is right (just a few blocks away from Berkeley BART) and she has a really solid skillset. I haven't tried anything daring yet but I have been satisfied with all my cuts to date. She communicates well. Also, the appointment by email thing was kind of weird to me at first but she answers really promptly and is really organized. I usually dread salon chair chatter but her personality makes it interesting and fun. I always learn a thing or two! read more

Getting a haircut is one of those things I love to put off...till I'm sporting an embarrassing mullet kinda look. (Bless my sweetie, she still stays with me, guess she must be deep and shit.) And did I mention that I'm pake? (I wash and reuse ziplocks, foil, and sometimes even saran wrap...I'm not proud, it's just the truth.) So you know to overcome the hair trauma, it's gotta be good initially and in 3-6 months, it's gotta be reasonably non-frumpy (and, if I can swing it, a little hip/stylish) but also uber low maintenance (if I spend more than 15 minutes getting ready in the morning, it's a fancy day), and it can't cost me more than I spend all weekend (not only am I pake, but I'm also a bit underpaid). Probably cuz she couldn't take my hair anymore, my boss sent me to Maria. Dunno how Maria puts up with oddball antisocial types like me ("uh, can I have a faux hawk, but you know kinda like HK pop star too but not too baby dyke or anything, ok...?" and then I clam up and squint myoptically at the middle distance between the mirror and my seat, awkwardly trying to make small talk...). Despite such disastrous directions, it usually turns out well, and even better, it grows out so well that I habitually let it get a little outta hand. She also does an amazing job with my sweetie's hair. That girly framing swoopy kinda thing, with layers and shit. It's very cute and works well up and professional, or down and all dramatic (obviously I'm more shallow than my honey, but yes, she's a babe). I know that this means I'll run the risk of making Maria's appointments even harder to schedule, but it's ok, I'm already booking months ahead, so bring it, cuz she's good. read more

After a series of Yelp "reviews" where I went off on random stories and tangents because I felt like it or was drunk, I'm going to write a sort of semi-real "review" now. Like another reviewer, I decided to come here after reading the positive reviews too. I called the day before and made an appointment for a haircut. Honestly I don't go to nice salons often and when I do always feel kind of awkward because I feel like my hair sucks and I have mental anxiety anyway. But I think I felt comfortable here. My stylist Adrianna was nice and seemed to have a laid back and mellow personality. I don't usually talk when I get my hair cut either but we talked a little about a few things. She was kind of soft spoken and I have bad hearing so it was hard for me to hear what she was saying sometimes. I think she did a good job and blew my hair out nicely. It wasn't until I got home and looked at it longer in a larger mirror that I realized how much I really liked it. I got a few compliments from coworkers for the next 2 days also. So overall I will be coming here next time I need a haircut and do recommend it. I've also been considering some coloring and highlights and will probably come here for that too. read more

No matter where I live in the country, I only get my hair cut at Eclipxe. I am very picky with who cuts my hair. Marissa is AWESOME! I've been waiting about 2 months to write this review because I wanted to see how my hair would grow out. First off, I made the mistake of going to a beauty school for a cut (Paul Mitchell in San Jose) and they butchered my hair. Out of desperation, I tried Eclipxe. Bear in mind, I've already tried stylists at Panache on College and Ketar on Fourth Street before the Paul Mitchell debacle. I am SOOOOO grateful to have found Marissa! She is a magician with hair! She fixed the embarrassing cut then AND it has grown out beautifully into the style that I was hoping for! I've got Asian hair (read: straight and thick) and Marissa knew how to cut it so that it would grow out right. I was referred to eclipxe by a friend of mine about a year ago and I was a little wary about it at first because I have had horrible experiences in the past with other salons and stylists. I made an appointment with Marisa and she was absolutely on point with the style and color I had asked for. Eclipxe Hair Salon is a friendly affordable hair salon. Once I retired I didn't want to pay $70 + tip for a hair cut. Tried a few other salons and then found Eclipxe. Had Ruby cut my hair a few times. Ruby is great and the salon's owner. Once when she was too busy to get me in for a few days I tried Pedro. Love him. He gave me a great cut and I have been going back to him now for 3 more cuts. He's a wonderful person and for my straight fine hair he does a masterful job. I have been going to Ruby for over 10 years and I still think she is fabulous--cut, color, highlights, what have you!!! She listens and delivers. She is also such a joy to chat with and always gives excellent customer service! There are several salons in the East Bay that easily charge DOUBLE the price, or more, with similar or even mediocre results. I have referred several people to Eclipse and they have all been satisfied. My only issue is that sometimes I have to wait a couple weeks for an appointment, but I am always glad that I did!!! I've often oscillated between Fantastic Sam-esque places and $75-a-cut salons. Nearly two years ago I searched for some middle ground and decided on Adrianna at Eclipxe because of good Yelp reviews. Reasons to like her: She's laid back but professional. She makes thoughtful suggestions for your hair rather than imposing her own agenda. She doesn't force conversation if you're in the mood to mellow out and enjoy the singularly wonderful feeling of having somone else wash and style your locks. She does a good job and offers free bang trims between cuts to boot. And...she doesn't push product on you. Fyi, my hair is medium length and very fine. read more
