This review is for Bruno Compin: I've been getting my hair done by Bruno since early 2005. Minus a 6 year break where I moved, he's been my constant and the only stylist who works wonders with my hair. He is a hair genius. When I told my friends at work that I color my hair bc I'm grey, they didn't believe me - he's that good that it looks so natural and sun kissed and with a beautiful depth. He gives me the most beautiful, natural looking highlights and the color is always so perfect and rich. His haircuts are fantastic too and he always knows what will or won't look good on me. In addition to his incredible talent with hair, he's also the BEST company. I love talking with him - he's so hilarious and always has great stories. I drive from San Francisco to see Bruno and it's something I always look forward to. I also love his keratin treatments. I needed a good haircut for my unruly, graying, 54-year old curls. Kim Berry just did my hair, and it looks amazing. She really took her time to discuss shaping and goals, and also was meticulous both with the cut but also with instructions. When you have a ton of thick, curly hair, it's more than just getting it cut. You really need to know how to maintain it. She was absolutely precise with what to do and demonstrated it. She cut it dry, of course, then did the washing and products, and after the diffuser, she fine tuned the cut to make it just right. My hair looks better than it has in ages! And she is funny and sweet and lovely to be with. So I feel so lucky to find a curly expert in the East Bay who's good with helping an old broad like me! I'm a huge fan of Bruno! I'm a fellow with curly hair, and I'm kind of vain about it: it's one of my best features. I can tell when I've gotten an OK haircut and Bruno is out of this world. Long ago, I had a stylist in LA who quit the game to go be a woodworker in Maine and I was like "Well I'll never have anyone quite like Boyd" and it's hard to live up to a mythologized former stylist like that - but Bruno is so good he can compete with Boyd's memory! I recently spent $120 here (including tip) on a service and although the experience was pleasant, my hair looks pretty ordinary and average.

I'm not terribly picky when it comes to hair cuts, my hair is curly so it hides mistakes pretty well. I've come here a handful of times. I've had my hair cut by 3 different women. 2 women do a good job. The third woman who cut my hair made it look like I had a shelf on my head. I was so afraid of getting a cut again I waited 6 months and made an appt with the woman who does a good job, but she's ALWAYS late. Please don't schedule me for an appt when you're still going to be cutting someone's hair when I arrive and make me wait 20+ minutes. It's rude and inconsiderate. read more

Kim Berry gives me the most beautiful haircuts. They make me feel like the best version of myself and hold up wonderfully. My hair has always been really hard to cut, both curly and wavy, and now that I'm getting older it's also a bit frizzy. But she makes it look better than it's ever looked. When I see her haircuts for other people, I see that she can do any shape and style. She is not trying to make us look like her vision or aesthetic, the way some stylists do. Instead, she finds out who we are and gives us the cut that best suits our hair, face, life. She asks questions as she works about what we want and really listens to the answers. Update: Lola salon reached out to me in a little under three weeks after I put up my review. They did what they could to assuage my discrepancy, and it is very much appreciated . Story: My stylist was very kind and professional (I'm sure very knowledgeable, too; also this review is late considering this happened in early October). I always get my hair done in October as an early birthday present to myself. My only critique is that I ended up having to big chop my hair after the majority of it was fried (I went from shoulder length hair with 4A/4B shrinkage curls to one to two inches of hair). What I specifically asked for was to go as light as possible (with color removal) without compromising the integrity of my curls, and I voiced that my main priority was preserving the health of my curls. So essentially, the main goal was to keep my curls intact and to prevent chemical damage. To be fair, my hair was previously colored and fading (and survived multiple processes/ was healthy). I know my stylist probably did the best she could and felt really bad about it (she didn't say it, probably to keep me calm, but you could see the disappointment in her face lol). She also gave me her business card for if I wanted to come back for a cut (since my head was full of stringy, denatured/straightened curls). I ended up going elsewhere and pretty much all of my hair, with an exception of an inch to two inches from the roots (with shrinkage) was removed. Only the tips of my hair, closer to the roots (showing a little bit of bleach) were healthy enough to keep. I was disappointed because I lost over 3 years worth of hair growth after I big chopped in May of 2017; and I never bleach my own hair: I always go to a professional. I was also disappointed that I paid $300+ to end up with a head full of damaged hair that needed removal. Maybe in the future, instead of pinturas, I'll just do full head bleach sessions, that way I can avoid multiple processings (bleaching over a section of hair that has already been bleached in the past). Don't let this deter you weary readers from trying out this salon, just be conscious about multiple processings over time. If it wasn't for having to big chop, it'd honestly give 4-5 stars. It's just sucks that my hair got fried and that I had to start over in my hair journey. read more

Vivianne gave me a wonderful Deva cut a few weeks ago. It was much more than I expected. I have only had 2 hair stylists in my many years of life. They both had curly hair and I trusted that they knew what to do. Needless to say I was a bit nervous. Vivianne went through everything she was thinking of doing and gave me the "why" which I love. She colored my gray, gave me only the the highlights that I really needed so as not to over process, and then gave me a dry (Deva) cut based on the shape of my curls. She and the woman who shampoo'd me showed me how to style as it's a bit different than what I am used to. I have only used the hairdryer 2 times in the last several weeks since Ive had the cut. Whereas I'd normally use it everyday for volume. This is all due to this new cut and their education on a different way to use product. Everyone at the salon is trained to give this cut. I chose Vivianne because of the reviews of her expertise with color. I've had several compliments on my hair and have referred my "curly" and non curly friends to LoLa. I think I've found my 3rd hair stylist! My next appointment is next month! read more

Most importantly, she cares about the health of your hair. I've gotten my hair highlighted from many different people/salons over the years and I must say I never felt that they cared about using the proper stuff on my hair for long term healthy hair, rather they just cared about it looking good when I left the salon. Vivian is the best! I wanted to color my hair for the first time and went to Vivian based on a recommendation. I was extremely nervous, since I had never been to a salon in my entire life, but she made me feel welcome, we talked about what I wanted, and most of all I had fun! She's an engaging, passionate person who always makes sure I am happy with the results. Over the years, I've never made her life easy, because I come up with fleeting hair color combinations on a whim, but she always kills it anyway. I've pretty much hit every color in the rainbow with her out of the blue and she always makes it perfect. The most notable story about her character: I tried to remove color out of my hair on my own a day before my business meeting and ended up looking like a disney cartoon skunk. I called her and she stayed late after work, working on my hair so I wouldn't look like a fool for my client. In no measurable way is that her duty or a service expected, but that is the type of person she is. This is my first review on Yelp, and I've had an account since 2014 so I hope it speaks volumes to how serious I am when I say you will not find stylists more dedicated than Vivian and the team at Lola. read more

Lola is great. I followed my hero Kim here from another salon and was happy to do it! I always come in indecisive and frustrated with my hair and she fixes my look and my attitude. I have been getting my hair cut by her for like 9 million years, and she always gets it right. I have gone from long to short to long to very short and back again with her help. She has spent countless hours helping me clarify my hair aspirations, and is good enough to tell me if something I want is going to come out looking weird. She always has an alternative suggestion that ends up making me look cool and not at all weird, which is probably a little misleading, because I am definitely not cool. Minus .5 stars for misleading the public, plus one million stars for being super fun to hang out with, and for having the best tv recommendations, and for making me laugh all the time. Everyone there is also good at hair, and probably also cool, so go even if you can't see Kim. It's a pleasant, airy space and everyone seems relaxed and happy. read more

My mother (70yo) went and got a very nice haircut here yesterday. I have in the past as well. She also got an hour long exposure to COVID. Her stylist informed her that she had been exposed in a text saying "that was why I was double masked." As in, her stylist knew it was possible she had covid, was waiting on her test results, and still went into work. Apparently the stylist was coughing during the appointment too. How they think it is ok to have sick employees at work (in this day and age!) is beyond me. read more

Unfortunately not at all worth the time or expense. Had the worst haircut in many many years. Uneven all over, shorter on one side especially the bangs on one side (oddly lop off on the right) and feathered back on the left. Like two different haircuts being attempted. Or like a 'oops' that couldn't be fixed without going a ton shorter and it was already too short. Hence it was left uneven. Then Styled messy maybe to cover up the mistakes because by the time I got home it was clearly a bad job done. And I just didn't have the time or desire to go back and deal with fixing it with the same person who messed it up. 1st cut here awesome, 2nd hair cut just meh, this last one awful and that just means I'm not returning. Sadly it must have been a off day. But I just can't afford to keep going and not get a consistent look or at least trust a solid haircut will be delivered. Not only was the visit expensive but hair products added to the total, made me have to do quick math while being watched as I figured out a ok tip. I could feel something was off as I paid, because usually after a great cut, it feels light/ bouncy/ fresh but I honestly had no idea how 'off' it was until I got home and started to run my fingers through it, that's when I really noticed the lopsided back and bangs. And how heavy the back was, basically no layers. And i always get lots of layers. Time to find another salon. read more

I saw Vivian for a haircut a few months ago. She was super enthusiastic and straight to the point. I explained I wanted a shag but nothing resembling the 80s. Vivian suggested we go a different route for various reasons and I agreed. Perhaps I didn't explain well so that's on me. I'm giving 3 stars not because I didn't get the cut I described but because the haircut from day one until now (months later) hasn't blended in. Theres a big chunk of my hair that doesn't sit well. It's super blunt and just falls on top of the bottom longer layer. I've had layered hair style before and this is the weirdest it's been. read more
