I appreciated the variety of local products mixed with familiar brand. Prices are a little higher than some other supermarkets on the island, but the convenience and selection made up for it. I had to wait in line for a little while,& it felt like everyone had the same idea @ the same time. That being said, despite the crowd, the store itself was well-stocked & organized once you actually got around the aisles. Food galore w/ fresh cold cuts, salads, veggies, meats, & anything you could think of. They even had roasted chicken & freshly baked bread. 1 thing I'll say is that I didn't expect the bathrooms to be so clean. W/ how busy it was, I honestly wasn't expecting much, but it was actually spotless, smelled like Fabuloso, & usable. It didn't feel neglected or overwhelming, which made a difference during a hectic visit like that. Overall, it was a solid store experience considering the rush. A little chaotic, but still functional, stocked, & surprisingly maintained in the areas that matter when a place is that busy. The staff was also friendly & still managed to keep a smile despite the crazy rush.

Well-stocked, local and international products, intermediate in size, but lacking a few items. NAME: Supermercado Selectos, Añasco CHAIN: Supermacado Selectos, slectospr.com MY RATING: Very, Very Good (4.6/5) SIZE: Larger than a colmado, but smaller than larger supermarkets. TITLE: "Large but Local" [Yelp, my review #465 [1], submitted 5 February 2016] TELEPHONE: (787) 826-1626 MANAGER: Well managed store. In the beginning, he greeted us every time we went in the store. LOCALITY: PR 2, Km. 143.3, Centro Comercial Multiplaza, Barrio Caracoles, Añasco, Puerto Rico 00610 LATITUDE, LONGITUDE: 18°17'50.34"N, 67°9'30.84"W DIFFICULTY LOCATING: easy DIRECTIONS: From the south, do a U-turn at the main traffic light in Añasco and take the first right into shopping mall. From the north, go through the light and do the same. Do not turn at the traffic light. The entrance off the light is always jammed up. PARKING: paved mall lot usually with open parking spaces close by OCCASION: Have a cheaper brand of Worcestershire sauce, sweet balsamic salad dressing, frozen flounder filets, and artesian lettuces, which other local stores lack. LAYOUT: As one enters the store, there is a cafeteria on the left and a bakery on the right. Checkout lines are straight ahead. Shelves and aisles are to the right of the checkout. AIR CONDITIONED: yes HOURS OF OPERATION: 5 am-11 pm every day CELEBRITIES: We are the only gringos we have ever seen there. Also, they had a 7 foot employee, for a while, who was quite a shock in the land of the short. PROBLEMS: (I) Security lights are too dim when power goes off. (II) They are often out of Sprite Zero (III) Pueblo has a few items they lack RECOMMENDATIONS: CUSTOMER: Drive by front of the store. Usually 1 or 2 parking spaces there. MANAGER/OWNER: You are doing a good job. COMPARISONS: Only nearby grocery stores are Pueblo in the Mayagüez Town Center Mall and Selectos at Añasco Commercial Center Mall. The Añasco Selectos is more pleasant, has more local products, and most prices are cheaper. The Selectos in downtown Mayagüez is mostly local stuff and not as good. Pueblo is a major Puerto Rican supermarket chain. I visited this store during my trip to Puerto…read moreRico some time ago. It was great to pick up some snacks for the road What surprised me was how similar the offerings here were to a typical supermarket in the states. I have tended to live in places with large Puerto Rican populations, so perhaps I'm used to offerings of produce (stuff like platanos, recao, etc.) that are more typical, but I was sort of surprised to find just about the same produce offering here as some of the stores I shop at back home. I found this a little disturbing because we're on an island in the Carribbean, a fundamentally different eco-zone, able to grow very different sorts of things...I'd expect to see more different types of tropical fruit, and fewer things like apples and pears...apparently people ship apples and pears and such really far so that people can eat them in the tropics...why they do so beats me, because I think the apples that get shipped long distances tend not to taste very good. Some (not even most) of the product packaging was in Spanish or bilingual, but there were a lot of the same products and there were not really all that many local brands and locally produced products. I wrote a blog post on the tea selection here: http://cazort.blogspot.com/2012/06/tea-in-puerto-rican-supermarket.html I think this experienced opened my eyes a bit to just how globalized and industrialized our food supply has become in the U.S. I ate lots and lots of really great, unique food when in Puerto Rico (probably my favorite thing of all was mofongo), but I was a little disappointed visiting this place. This supermarket struck me as just a typical, below-average-quality supermarket that I could find anywhere in the states.
