1 STAR BED BUGS Please heed my warning and stay away. You really get what you pay for. Due flight cancellations, my friend and I found this room for extremely cheap. But the nightmare we were about to uncover is not worth the price. The walls were peeling, the room smelt of a smoker, horribly rude concierge, and the cherry on top BED BUGS! Yes, the bed bugs did indeed bite that night. While my friend and I were relaxing we saw a tiny creature crawl up one of our pillows. We immediately got up and saw that it was a bed bug, we then checked the sheet seams and behold, tiny black and brown dots everywhere. Bed bug droppings all over. We left immediately and after throwing all our belongings into trash bags, ended up sleeping in our car. read more

Leaving it a five star because a lot of these reviews are expecting a luxury hotel for half the price. The price was great. People are friendly. The room is clean. There isnt a smell. We booked a king bed nobody smoking. We had a late check in and the guy was so nice. Asked me if I liked the room and let me know if we needed anything to let him know. If you're looking for something inexpensive and does its job. I.E. hot shower, clean bed, working air conditioning and a tv with ample channels then this is your place. If you want high end then go elsewhere where. read more

Where to start? First I must say that when we drove up we were pleasantly surprised. The facade looked new and was inviting. As soon as I walked in the door I knew it was not going to be good. The facade is hiding an ugly truth. Don't be fooled by their online pictures. The hallway behind the facade was the actual hotel. The front desk attendant was enclosed in a plexiglass safety cage with a small ticket slot that they communicate through and you have to bend your ear to the slot to hear them. I have stayed over 25 nights at choice properties so far this year and my company handles all the bookings; this is the first time that the attendant has told me that the room price increased since the booking. WHAT? I was already booked at a set price, but this hotel does not follow those rules. After we finally got the room we dropped our bags and headed to the nearest grocery store for Febreeze and candles. The smell was an unknown mixture of several smells in the room. The internet speed was terrible, I could not even complete my work for the day. Forget about streaming anything. When I asked the clerk if there was a problem with the internet he said that the hotel was booked and everyone was using it at once. I would believe this except for the fact that there was only 10 cars at the hotel at the time. The next day after work we returned to the hotel and tried to use our room key and it would not work. The hotel only authorities the room key for one day, as we found out from the guest behind us that has been there several days and has to have his room key coded every day. We were supposed to stay another day but checked a day early and will drive all night home after work rather than stay here. We checked in and stayed for leas than 3 hours before we saw roaches in the room. We also asked for a non-smoking room and it clearly smelled like smoke, there were drawings on the walls, the floor was peeling up and missing in places, the mini-fridge had mold in it and more. Will never be back. That was disgusting. read more

I stayed at this hotel only because on my trip to Boston I couldn't find anything nearby for less than $200. This hotel was a joke and makes the top 3 list on worst hotels I've ever stayed in. First off, it looks so much nicer on their website. What you don't see is the smell. My room was supposed to be non-smoking but it smelled as if someone had smoked & also smelled like dirty dog. I was really not interested in staying but since I was in Boston for only 2 days and spent most of my time out of the room, I didn't want to deal with the hassle of paying more elsewhere and having to take time away from the city experience. Staff was not friendly, somewhat rude and not helpful. Also, no elevator! So, if you've got alot of heavy luggage, good luck! I would NEVER stay here again and wished I'd done better research before I even booked the room through Expedia. I've stayed at cheap hotels before that were better than this one. It just attracts the wrong people, staff and even the price was not cheap. I paid $140 after taxes & fees in June. P.S Breakfast was just OK and their vending machines were out of order. Stay away at all costs. Terrible experience as soon as you walk into registration. The attendant was very rude, my friend and I were the only people at registration at the time, the clerk was watching television as we walked in, he barely acknowledged us and certainly didn't greet us. We had to initiate the conversation, he never lowered the volume of the television or even pause it. He was more interested in it than getting us checked in. When we asked questions he replied in short one word answers. My friend needed to use the restroom and asked if there was one he could use, he was told he could use the one in our room. I asked if there was a wi-fi password and he said rather rudely "no password, no internet". When I asked about the breakfast options he just pointed to a sign on the wall without saying a word. I was having problems with my Uber app so I asked if he had a number for a local cab company, he slapped a business card against the glass and told me to take a picture of it without taking his eyes off the t.v.. When we got our room key, we had to go out the back door to an exterior staircase to get to our rooms. We noticed at least two used syringes on the ground on our way. The grounds were a bit untidy to begin with, piles of miscellaneous items leaning against columns and walls. The room itself wasn't all that bad except for the television, couldn't change the channels to easily. Not sure if it was the remote or poor reception. I've had good luck with Choice hotels in the past across the country and I will certainly use them again in the future but I will never return to this establishment, or recommend it to anyone. I found out that the city of Boston was using a few hotels in the area to house people from a tent city called Methadone mile. I thought the people at the front desk (which is behind plexiglass) were very friendly. Coffee was watered down, and donuts weren't very good, but hey, it's free. Also, there aren't hairdryers in the rooms, but I called the front desk and they have one there. The walls were thin and I could hear the TV of whoever was staying next door. I admit though, I felt a little uneasy as I was traveling by myself. Then again, I AM a 22-year old from suburbia. It just felt like an unsafe neighborhood, that didn't have a lot of street lights. There were also a few cameras placed around the stairwell and lobby...I'm not sure if those made me feel better or worse. But anyway, I definitely got what I paid for! It was the cheapest place I could find that was between downtown Boston and the airport. read more

I stayed here with my first husband back in 1999. I decided to look the hotel up again because I was curious if it was still around. We had just been looking for something in the Boston area and made an advance reservation. I can still remember how dirty and disgusting the room was back then! The room was dirty, the walls were dirty, the carpet, everything - just really gross! Ever had that feeling of being exhausted from traveling but being in a room so dirty you're uncomfortable in it? And you try to pass the night and hope you don't pick up any bugs or diseases? That was my experience exactly! The reason that I am posting this today is that it's been 16 YEARS AND NOTHING HAS IMPROVED WITH THE PLACE! I told the desk clerk the next day that we wanted some kind of refund because the room and the stay were bad and we didn't get any good rest. We were told that since we stayed in the room and didn't check out immediately, no refund would be given. I was far beyond pissed off and called the CORPORATE OFFICE TO COMPLAIN about this hotel. I told them about the condition of the place and again requested my refund. The corporate office told me that they couldn't do anything, that the hotel was a franchise and it was up to that hotel whether or not to refund my money. Then the corporate office sent me a letter of apology with a $25 gift certificate towards a future stay at one of their hotels. We never used it because we decided to never stay with this chain ever again. read more

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Regardless of the cost (I was extremely overcharged at $150 for the night), I wouldn't stay here for free. I should have just driven around all night instead of sleeping here. I requested a non-smoking room and was informed that there are no non-smoking rooms at this location. The heating and cooling system had so much smoke in it that when it turned on it would spew out clouds of black cigarette smoke. Even though it was hot and humid, I had to turn off the A/C because I couldn't breathe when it was on. The guy at the check-in counter didn't know where our room was. The grounds around the building, including the outside of the lobby and the hall outside the room doors stunk of urine. The television in the room emitted a high-pitched whine instead of audio and was unwatchable. There was a lot of noise outside by people walking around, up and down the stairs, and being generally boisterous. I was also informed by locals in the area that this Econo Lodge location is used by the city of Malden as temporary Section 8 housing. There were police at the location the morning of my departure investigating some sort of crime at the location. I didn't stay around long enough to find out what happened. Do NOT stay at this hotel, at any cost. Sleep in your car instead. You'll be happier and better rested. read more

Wish I read the reviews before checking into this place. Where do I begin? As my cousin and son drive up to the parking lot a gentleman blows us a kiss and grabs his crotch. Enough to rattle this hard core New Yorker! Also, if the counter is covered with plexi glass that should also be a huge sign to run the other way. The woman at the counter was far from nice and when I mentioned to her what happened, she chuckled. The room - my, my, my! Smelled of smoke in a non smoking room. I wasn't sure if the red wall was really a cover up for blood. I really should have left but was so tired and figured as soon as I get up I am out, I could manage for the night. Honestly, the staff was REALLY REALLY sweet. The first guy who greeted my friend and I at the counter was very cooperative and the next guy was nice enough to provide plenty of delivery menus BUT that's as far as I go with saying how much I like this place. I don't know if hotels.com made a mistake or I didn't examine the web page close enough but this hotel was no where near where I wanted to be. It was rather in the cuts and barely walking distance to a plaza with food or any goods other than the gasoline station across the street. Not to mention my room was in the back which LOOKED creepy. I felt like I was in one of those thriller movies where I'm sure our neighbor next door was a murderer or something. The electric sockets were weirdly loose making it hard to charge things since it kept falling out. There was this large suspiciously looking white stain on the carpet near our tv that none of us did not want to go near. I later found ANOTHER similar one on the chairs next to our table. My memory is rather fuzzy now of the place but I know for a fact I've experienced WAY better but I guess that's what we get for going for cheap motels. Honestly though, never again. This place is a dump. It smells gross and there was a cigarette burn on the bedspread in my "nonsmoking" room, which smelled like a mix of air freshener and stale smoke. It was noisy even with the windows closed, there are no good food options closeby, and I woke up with a mysterious bug bite that may or may not have been from a bedbug. Why take a chance? The hotel itself is okay, nothing special, but appeared to be clean and recently renovated. I stayed in a queen room, which was somewhat small, but I was only staying one night. The soft drink machine in the lobby wasn't working. My main complaint is that there was no coffee maker in the room, so I had no way to have coffee (even though I brought my own coffee, just had no maker or cups). There was a microwave and refrigerator in the room, which is a nice plus if I was staying longer. The telephone in the room had a flashing red light, like a message light. I called the front desk, the clerk said to put a towel over it. One downside (which isn't the hotel's fault) is that there was road construction going on outside the hotel all night long, making for a very poor night's sleep. read more

Ohhhhhh, Lord. Where do I begin? First, the positives. Most of the staff were very nice, and the hotel is close to the CVS and a little store run by friendly, helpful women (and if you want a quick bite to eat, go to Maria's pizza and grab one of their awesome subs). My room was on the first floor, which was a big plus. It had a microwave and mini-fridge, and both of them worked. It's also very easy to commute to Boston if you want to take public transportation. But the neighborhood is sketchy, and I didn't think it was wise to venture alone at night. The check-in clerk is behind bullet-proof glass, which says it all right there. The room was dingy and musty, and I kept the lights on the whole time because I was afraid there might be roaches. The wifi was messed up at times, and the basic continental breakfast was yuck. Overall, I'm just not a big fan of this place. :( read more

I had a horrible experience , rooms were not cleaned thoroughly , the shower floors had Pubic hairs and not cleaned when I addressed it to the person at the desk he said he would intake a complaint , nothing was done to address the issue. In the morning we were waken up a guy name Kwan , he was very rude he told us we had to get out or we will be charged for another day , check out was at 12 and it was 1145 . We asked him for some additional time and he was very rude and told us to hurry up, same guy came back up again and told us he was coming back for the iron because he thought someone might steal it. I went back down to address the issue about the uncleanliness in the bathroom and Kwan didn't do anything about the issue or seemed concerned to address it . read more

I stayed at the Econolodge in Malden from 8/29 - 8/31. You'll note that I graciously left one star for this establishment; that is because I managed to stay two nights without any insect bites. For this particular hotel, I am going to assume that this is a stellar achievement. The included amenities are Free WiFi, Free Breakfast, Free Parking, Air Conditioned, and Handicap accessible. Free WiFi: I had no trouble using it because I am going to assume the bulk of the clientel was otherwise occupied; probably right outside my door, discussing deals that included such overheard nuggets as "I can bring a friend, but that will cost you extra." I heard this about an hour and a half after I heard the echo of gunfire, which had been from a shooting a little more than a mile and a half away and was on the local news. Granted, the shooting had nothing to do with the hotel but rather will give you a glimpse into the charm of the surrounding neighborhood. Free breakfast. The question you are going to ask yourself is, "do I really want to ingest these items; do I want to put them into my body, allowing them to affect everything from my digestive system to my immune system to possibly altering my DNA?" Choose wisely. The breakfast comes out bright and early each morning; I know this because my room was next to the lobby, the walls are thin, and the banging around first thing in the morning in this particular neighborhood is possibly the most effective wakeup alarm you can get outside of a supermax prison. Free parking. The parking is only in the front of the hotel. There is a parking lot in the back, which is where my room was; however, it has a very high fence and gates that are permanently closed and locked, I assume for the safety of the guests at the back of the hotel. However, part of the fence does not meet the hotel, so there is some pedestrian traffic for anyone after hours who want to enter and exit that enclosed area without a hotel key; this may be convenient for any guests who like to discuss deals that include bringing a friend, but not very convenient for, say, law enforcement to patrol. Air conditioning. Leave this on as cold as you can take it; the chill will dull the smell of your room a little. Bring a full complement of air freshener, perfume, and keep that air conditioner going. I cannot vouch for handicapped access. I am actually disabled, and I looked around for a ramp to walk up after my 5 hour drive to the hotel; finding none, I went to open the door and step up, and nearly tripped. The step looks makeshift with a wooden plank kickplate of sorts. Highstep it in, kids--otherwise, your face is going to meet carpet, and this is a carpet that is frankly not clean enough to meet the face of a living human. The room is poorly lit, so if you're blind it won't be an issue. For the sighted, it will decrease your chance of seeing filth. My brother and his family checked in the next day--we were meeting up for a family function. He told me his room number and I went to the front of the hotel to look for his room, and went up the stairs. For the love of all that's holy, if you are assigned a room to the front of the hotel, ask to change rooms immediately if you are brave enough to stay. The urine smell up there is so strong I nearly fell backward down the stairs. As it turns out, my brother and his family were also at the rear of the hotel, facing the unused, locked-up parking lot, where it didn't smell like bodily waste but did have a distinctive odor. My room's odor made me look under the bed to see if there was a dead hooker under there, but it was a platform bed so that was not the case. My first night there, however, was a harrowing one for me--nearly 400 miles from home, alone, in a room that smelled of putrefaction and decay, before the sun set I did the only thing I could--trekked over to the local liquor store for some liquid courage that would relax me enough to sleep. I chatted with the man at the counter, and when he heard where I was staying, his words were: "oh God no--do yourself a favor and lock your door, and put your luggage & whatever else you can against that door." He then told me about how over the years there have been many complaints about overdoses, prostitution and crime at this very hotel, and he said that it was a "welfare hotel"--and while I cannot verify all this, the urine smell on the second floor in front, the locked up parking lot in back, the weird lobby noises all night, the exotic people talking outside my room door all night and the lady discussing "bringing a friend" all tell me that this man might be telling me the truth. Upon checkout, I reflected for a moment in gratitude that I survived unscathed, hugged my brother and his family in relief that they too survived, and made my way home. I've stayed in budget hotels many times but this is one I would not return to. My room (non-smoking) smelled strongly of cigarette smoke that someone had tried to cover with febreeze or some such thing. The bathroom was so small the if you dropped a hand towel off the towel rack it would drop into the toilet. The shower knob was coming off the shower wall. The beds were the least comfortable I've ever slept in. The door to our room, which accessed a hall, rattled in the door jam. It didn't exactly make me feel secure. There was no other lock to lock the door from the inside like there usually is on a hotel door. The electrical panel was exposed. There were no power outlets near the mirror in the bedroom so if someone wanted to use a blow drier outside of the bathroom you couldn't do it in front of the mirror. The windows were dirty. Basically, I wouldn't want to take my wife or kids here, the place is a rats nest. Garbage, worst hotel i've ever stayed in and I do not expect much from a hotel. but safety and security is the bare minimum Our non smoking room smelled like smoke, the AC and Fridge did not work and there is one hairdryer for the entire hotel. The staff are impolite and disinterested in helping in anyway, and they seem annoyed when you ask them for anything We came back to our room at 11pm after being out for the entire day and our window was pushed in and on the floor. We told the guy at the front desk and he said someone pushed it in, we asked who and why they would do that and he said well it just fell by itself. We asked him how does that happen and he put the window back in upside down and said that someone would fix it tomorrow. he said sorry and walked off. needless to say we left that same night and found another hotel. we paid for two hotels our last two nights but it was worth it to not have to stay at this dump read more

We have stayed at low budget hotels before and we have never stayed at a hotel like this before! We knew as soon as we drove in the parking lot what kind of place we had booked! The place was so old, run down and did not appear to be that clean when we first entered the building. There were no deadbolts on the door to our room therefore, we did not feel as safe as we have in other places we have stayed before! There was hair in the shower and on the shower curtain from the previous guests and the bathroom was so tiny you could hardly turn around in there! If a towel fell, it would fall right into the toilet. The room itself did not smell pleasant at all and just overall did not feel clean. It was not in any way an enjoyable stay and we would never stay here again nor recommend anyone stay here in the future. read more

This place is awful!!!! Please do yourself a favor and listen to this review because this is the truth and this place is terrible. I landed into Logan International Airport around 2am and called to confirm I was on my way. The man that answered the phone seemed irritated that I called that late, as if I woke him up from his sleep. He was not pleasant with me at all. He repeatedly asked me what time I would be getting there and I explained to him that I wasn't sure because I wasn't from the area and I still needed to get my car rental. It's almost as if he wanted to know to make sure he was awake when I got there. My husband and I walk into the lobby and it's freezing cold in there and it has a stench like cat pee in it. There is a guy behind the plexiglass which I know wasn't the man I spoke to on the phone. He seemed a little more pleasant. We get our key cards and make our way to the room. Picture section 8 housing because this is exactly what it feels like in this hot mess of a place. The room smelled musty. The air conditioning was on max and I was still hot in the room. I found 2 dead bugs in the bed!!! The hot water gets turned off at night and the refrigerator was lukewarm at best. No iron in the room and no blowdryer. When asked if they have an ice machine they said "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't"...aka the ice machine doesn't work. This is not the worst part about this place though!! PLEASE READ THIS!!! My husband and I left for 6 Flags and when we returned our window was pushed in. The room next door was completely wide open and it looked extremely sketchy. We told the man at the front desk and he seemed irritated that he had to check what happened. He then says that someone must have pushed the window in. I asked for him to explain to me why someone would push the window in (other than wanting to break in) and he quickly changed his reasoning. He said that it must have fallen on it's own. The window slides in so there is no way it fell on it's own. I told him I felt very unsafe and uncomfortable. And he shrugged it off and said this was nothing. He puts the window back in but upside down so now the window is not shut all the way. I asked him "so this is your solution?" and he said "yes" and walked away. I stood there in complete disgust that this hotel truly does not care for the safety of their guests. I ended up leaving the hotel at 11pm at night and had to pay for another hotel room. He never offered to reimburse me, never offered at least another room. NEVER EVER WILL I STAY AT ECONOLODGE AGAIN! And I will make sure I let everyone I know about this experience. read more

This places sucks they messed up all our plans for the game we were going to. My boyfriend and I made reservations through their website and we paid and everything. We get there and their is an age requirement 21 and over first off that isn't on the website so now we have to call and try getting a refund. We had no idea what to do because we thought we have no issue. Thankfully courtyard took us in and helped us out a lot.
