Great place to stay. Clean, and cheap. The only con is that it is next to train tracks. Would stay there again.

The hotel is cute, the staff are nice. I hate to say anything negative about people in hospitality…read moreas it's hard work, but I've never seen anything like this in a room let alone a $200 one. My bed was a bloody mess that covered all sheets and the pillows. I'm hesitant to post a picture because it's a bit gory. I'm honestly not sure how this can happen in a hotel room. I couldn't sleep in it.

A charming West Texas gem with vintage flair and genuine hospitality…read more I've driven along I-10 between El Paso and points east more times than I can count, but somehow, I'd never stopped at Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn--a fact that has repeatedly surprised my physician, who has raved about it for years. Now I understand why. Hotel El Capitan is part of a small group of historic hotels in Texas (think Hotel Paisano in Marfa), and it brings that same kind of cinematic charm and small-town elegance to Van Horn. While most of the lodging in the area consists of typical roadside chains, El Capitan stands out as a true destination--picturesque, warm, and full of character. The experience begins with a beautiful courtyard that feels like a hidden oasis. There's a fountain at the center and plenty of outdoor seating, where guests can enjoy food and drinks from the on-site restaurant. Inside, the lobby is cozy and inviting--exactly the kind of place you want to settle into after a long drive. Though Van Horn is only about 90 minutes from El Paso, I was glad I made the decision to spend the night. My room had a charming mid-century vibe, with furniture that looked lovingly preserved from the 1950s or '60s. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and to my delight, the room included a private outdoor patio with two chaise lounges and a table--perfect for a quiet moment under the West Texas sky. The restaurant, like the hotel itself, keeps things traditional but thoughtful. The menu leans Texas-style with clear Mexican influences, and the service was warm and attentive. I ordered the pistachio-crusted chicken with a glass of wine, and it was the ideal wind-down meal. The next morning's breakfast buffet hit all the right notes--classic continental offerings with a few Southwestern touches that made it feel more personal. While I may not have frequent reasons to stay overnight in Van Horn, I'm really glad I took the detour this time. Hotel El Capitan is a little slice of West Texas history and hospitality, and it absolutely deserves its reputation as a must-see stop on the road.

Another fine example, where you cannot judge a book by its cover…read more Of all the budget, and economy places that I have stayed, I have never seen one where, despite the small size, the room was this nicely done up. Or, having what essentially amounted to open-ended garage for most of the rooms. While the room does have a microwave, and mini fridge, a clock on the microwave read zero call 0:00. So, I had not realized that I drove through two time zones! Only after going out to dinner, and seeing that the place closed in 45 minutes, did I realize something was wrong. I found the bed to be quite comfortable. And the hot water was plentiful. The Wi-Fi is free, and secured. However, in my room, the signal strength was not at maximum. So, it worked fine for text. But, when it came to images, it took a while. Also, there's enough outlets to charge everyone's devices. 8-) If you don't mind having to either eat out for every meal, or being a microwave chef, this small little place would do well for an Extended Stay. The AC ran quietly, and work very well. However, due to the room design, the area where the bed was, cooled off quicker than the rest of the room. However, there could be one problem for some people; if you have a habit of jumping out of bed oh, you may find yourself back in bed, because you bounced off the wall.

I have made the long roadtrip from Phoenix to Houston three times. Van Horn, Texas happens to be…read morethe midway point. This super small town in West Texas has become my stopping point to rest for the night. Located right off of I-10, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Van Horn has been a good fit for what I'm looking for. Let's go through that. First off, they have free parking. I absolutely hate paying for parking at hotels, so I'm happy that's not a factor here. Second, as a member, you get several nice perks. One of them is a free water upon check in (they don't always remember, so make sure to remind them if need be). Another is late check out. Since I tend to get in late, being able to check out past the normal check out hour of noon allows me to get a good night's rest. Which is essential for a long road trip. Third, they have free breakfast. And it's better than the typical continental breakfast you see at other hotels. On my last visit, I had scrambled eggs, a bagel, a biscuit, breakfast sausage, cereal, pancakes, and cinnamon rolls. Not a bad haul! The rooms are comfortable and do the job. They aren't spotless, I found some stuff behind the bed and a hair in the shower, but overall, pretty decent. It's a Holiday Inn after all, I wasn't expecting the Ritz Carlton. They're also pet friendly and offer a decent rate for both cats and dogs. Some hotel have ridiculous pet fees or they don't allow cats (what's up with that?). That's not a problem here. Overall, I've stayed here six times and the visits have been pleasant. I've only had one incident. On one occasion, a young lady with brunette hair was working the front desk (I didn't get her hair). They have three dollies that you can use if needed to get your stuff up to your room. I always use one because I have a lot of stuff (it is a road trip after all). When I checked in, all of the three dollies were gone. The lady working the front desk informed me that a large party had come and had taken them all. She said she would check in 5-10 minutes. I waited. She then went up and said the dollies were not in the hallway. I said why wouldn't you knock on their door? She said she didn't know what room they're in. Rookie mistake. You have to jot this down to prevent a pickle like this. After wasting 20+ minutes after arriving late and being on the road for a long time, I finally convinced her to let me borrow the dolly that is used by the staff. It was frustrating that a solution was finally figured out after I had to push her multiple times to help. While disappointing, 9 times out of 10, my experience here has been solid.

Although we planned to stay elsewhere, we saw the Red Roof Inn sign, and decided to check it out. Laura was at the front desk. She listened to our needs and made recommendations regarding rooms and rates. She was not only professional but had a great sense of humor. The hotel common areas and grounds were well kept and clean. Our room was large and spotless. WiFi connection was solid. My only disappointment was in the complimentary breakfast provided the next morning. There were fountain juices, breads for toasting, apples,a small assortment of cereals, and two 'make your own waffles' waffle-makers with easy to read and follow directions posted by each waffle maker. Syrup, butter, and jelly packets were plentiful. But no milk? A covered chafing dish had a flame burning underneath but lifting the cover revealed...nothing but steam. Eggs and bacon to go with the waffles would have made this stay perfect Subtract the incomplete breakfast, our brief stay at Van Horn's, Red Roof Inn was outstanding. I very much recommend it and Laura.

We (the owners) went to every hotel in town in order to find the best accommodations for ourselves and our crew. Red Roof Inn was actually the last hotel we went to. Great price, clean/large rooms, complimentary conference room, free continental breakfast, coin laundry on site, outdoor area with grills, kitchenettes with large fridge all made it worthwhile from a business stand point. Our crew have been very happy with the accommodations as well. They can cook in their rooms and send more money home to their families. Now about Cathy, the manager. She goes above and beyond and takes personal pride in making this Red Roof Inn the very best it can be. There is always someone cleaning, sweeping, mopping the hallways, dining area, lobby, etc. The staff is courteous and work diligently to make sure we are comfortable and our needs are addressed quickly. The cleaning staff is efficient and helpful. Cathy works tirelessly with her staff to provide a cohesive and positive experience for all the guests. I am a educator/trainer and I see how well she trains her staff and her patience as she does so. If you want a decent, clean and affordable place to lay your head at night, come see Cathy. She will make it worth your while.
