Bayside BBQ's and Outdoor Centre is one of these fun shops. It's a mid size store taking on the big boxes, so I was pretty impressed by the competitive prices. I didn't buy a barbie, but I did pick up a cool digital thermometer fork for the goodies in the camp oven and I've got my eye on a new esky. Good luck to them.

The first I knew of this hsitory was that the gym I joined a few years ago was in a huge old red brick building at 89 Tingal Road, emblazoned on high in brickwork with the words 'R G Patterson & Co Pty Ltd, Produce Merchants'. Later I learned that Petterson's Produce still existed, further down Tingal Road at number 234 and have since been there many times for dog, cat, chook and turtle food, fertiliser and mulch. It's still like stepping back in time, the goods layed in a massive old tin and timber shed. The moblie dog wash pulls in every Saturday morning, the kids come in to get supplies for their budgies and it's a genuine piece of living history.

Recently opened, Nu Grow is huge, local, they have a great range and the staff seem to be experts rather than fill ins with no idea. I called in to grab some soil because was attempting to re-pot a plant and ended up browsing around which was surprisingly enjoyable. It definitely has a warehouse feel but it is quite bright and open and earthy. They have soil, plants, pavers, hardware plus heaps more. In short, they seemed to have everything you could need for your garden or for landscaping.

The carefully arranged shelves reach all the way to the ceiling, towering over you full of utensils you never knew you needed but are sure to make life ever so much easier. Clocks adorn the walls as a variety of kettles jostle for space below. The completely open front of the store is partially obscured by a display of unusually designed plates and other crockery. My favourite thing they stocked were the water bottles, which may sound strange, if you don't know me. I carry a water bottle with me everywhere, something which has led to a great deal of lighthearted teasing on the part of my friends. Belle Pot had a display of a few different brands out the front, so I amused myself for a while deciding whether it was time for a new faithful friend. This is the perfect place to go if you're in the market to revamp your kitchen.

The man who runs the store is always keen to help; I like to have a bit more of a browse before I commit, but like all tiny stores, we're very aware of each other's presence as soon as I go near the place. I've bought stable trays, tea cups, a knife, and some pretty glasses. No doubt I'll go back for more.
