And if a person didn't return theirs in the 20 minute slot, noone bothered going out to get it. So we patiently waited A few weeks later we go back here for a birthday party. I think we had an hour in the room and another hour on the rink. Not bad, but we felt rushed in the room eating & cake. Then, at the ice rink they had FOUR skate assistant sleds for us to use. Now, it's a party with about 20 kids, most of whom haven't skated before. So 'sharing' the sled was an issue. I asked someone that worked there if we could borrow more (because I know that had more & they weren't being used on the other side), but she said we are only allowed 4. Boo!

But, the perk here is that they don't charge more for non-residents to skate, so if you're bringing non-local friends, they won't have to pay more than you (unlike Evanston and other skating rinks). I do wish that they had some sort of pass card though like Evanston and Wilmette rinks both offer. Their website is a bit dated and confusing, but I sent them a message on Facebook to confirm their public skate hours and they got back to me within minutes, which was nice. They also have skate sharpening, which I definitely need before I try skating again (but haven't used that service yet). The rink itself is nice. It wasn't too crowded when I went during the week a week before Christmas, and the skaters I did meet were friendly. The woman at the desk was helpful as well. I'll definitely come back.

I love it because for a…read morefew hours on one Sunday in September, they shut down historic Ridge Avenue from Howard to Church Street. Round trip, this fun ride is roughly 3 miles. The Good: Ridge Avenue offers tree lined streets with a number of massive homes and structures dating from the 1800's. The quiet and picturesque ride makes for a pleasant experience. It's very family oriented and I saw parents with children in tow on bike trailers, big wheels, tandem bikes, tricycles, razor scooters, you name it. Adults rode on standard mountain or road bikes with a few on recumbents and I saw one participant on a Penny-farthing! Overall, it was pretty neat to see the spectrum of bicycles on parade. Motorized bicycles and skateboards are not allowed. There are a number of things/activities to do. Along the route is a bike decorating station for children. The Wheel and Sprocket tent offers free tire inflation, bike reflectors, and helmets (when available). If you need hydration, there is a tent offering free bottled water. If you need a liquid sweet treat, the NorthShore University Health System truck offers lemonade and hot chocolate. After an hour or so of riding, hunger can set in. Food trucks/tents are lined up ready to feed cyclists and spectators for a fee at Ridgeville Park. The Bad and the Ugly: I didn't notice this as much in 2018 but this year, there were a lot of cars accidentally pulling onto Ridge Avenue during this event. It was frustrating to watch despite signage, traffic barricades, police officers and volunteer staff present. On several occasions, I found police and staff yelling at cars to get off this side of the road. There were 3 near misses with bikes colliding with cars because motorists failed to heed the signs and blockades. Watching all this happen while looking out for my own safety was trying. As much as I love Bike the Ridge, the organizers for this event need to bump up the date because the weather is consistently shitty. I've done Bike the Ridge two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) and each time it was cold (mainly in the 30's) and rainy. No one likes to bike in that weather and the turn out in the last two years took a hit because of it. With that aside and some changes, Bike the Ridge can be a fun experience for all ages.

One year my daughter and I partook of the Zumba class, and they have various demonstrations as well. It's also refreshing to see all of the cultures and the diversity that comprises Evanston. We enjoy browsing for the jewelry, accessories and ethnic items, incense, shea butter, as well as scented oils, candles, and miscellaneous artwork! This is an annual event always in July, and it's usually super hot! If you're a people watcher, it's definitely a nice place to be. People come from all over, and I feel blessed to have grown up here and experienced this event year after year, right in my hometown.

Scenes vary from rolling hillsides and farms to a large steel mill. All the club members are very friendly and love to share their knowledge on model trains. So much attention to detail that you can spend all night down there. Bring the kids and your date...it's free. Kindly leave a donation though. This is similar to the Museum of Science & Industry! I was a "social member" of the Elmhurst Model Railroad Club (EMRRC) for a few years, accompanying…read moreregular members and their operations. Although the train layouts are excellent, the attitude of the Board of Directors and "key monitors" were horrible. Unfriendly, arrogant, and a sense of making visitors feel like imbeciles was present every time I was there. When I spoke with some of the Board, I was told to pay up, or get out. If I didn't like it, there were plenty of other train clubs out there, so go find one (which I did). It's really too bad, because there is a potential for camaraderie, fellowship, and good faith, none of which have been exhibited any of the times I was at EMRRC. Only reason I didn't give them 1 star is because they have the potential of being a great organization with excellent facilities. They just need to clean up the upper echelon, and remember that what they do reflects the rest of the Club and its posture. My close friends who had been long-time members of EMRRC, have recently refused to renew their dues, and have moved on to friendlier clubs in the immediate area.
