Stopped into Eddie C's while visiting Boston because we thought it would be fun to watch the NBA Finals game at a local bar. There were a few people sitting at the bar. We sat down at a booth. The older lady working there was behind the bar chatting with another lady. We sat and we sat. A couple of girls walked in and sat at the bar and were served right away. We sat some more. We waited ten minutes while the lady working chatted with her friend. We were not even acknowledged. We finally left and went to a different establishment to watch the game. Veteran Bartenders What a time warp here. This used to be a very rough neighborhood, now it's fine. Eddie C's, the key here is the bartenders. Two older ladies that really made our night. We only remember Jennie. What a card? She was so entertaining and friendly and had all of the clientele under her thumb. I am assuming she's been a staple at this historic joint for decades. For a dive bar, it has cheap drinks. That's all that matters. PBRs were $2.50. Mixed drinks were about $8 each though. The bartender was nice and welcoming. Eddie C's is definitely a dive bar and it's perfect if you are into that kind of thing (which I am). The more hole-in-the-wall a bar is, the more I'm into it. The first thing I saw when I approached Eddie C's was a 7-foot-tall tranny with a Diana Ross-esque wig, a pink fishnet dress with a leotard underneath, and killer heels. I knew right away that I was going to love this bar. All our drinks were bought for us so I honestly cannot comment on prices, but I'm guessing they aren't bad. They offer pitchers of beer which is a huge plus. I'm 23 and Eddie C's appears to draw in a much older crowd, of 40 or older. Everyone in there gives off an air of being up to some shady business, but they are also all friendly and just there to have a drink and a good time. It's a GREAT place to go if you enjoy people watching because some of the weirdest people I've seen in my life were in this bar. The music comes from a jukebox, so you're subject to everyone else's music taste, which can be both a blessing and a curse, depending who is in the bar. A bar fight did break out at the end of the night, and I just happened to be the one to get a drink thrown right in my face (I was not involved in the fight, it was just collateral damage). I stood there ringing the beer out of my hair and wiping my face off with paper towels, smelling like a brewery, but I wasn't even mad that I got soaked because this place is just SO entertaining. There was one guy harassing me ALL night that my friends had to actually chase out of the bar, but other than that, I would definitely go back to Eddie C's whenever I want to have just a chill night with friends and people watch over some pitchers of cold beer. read more

Forget setting up cable accounts and moving couches up five-floor walkups: the real problem with moving across any major body from where all your friends live is figuring out where to meet in the middle to get your booze on. Unfortunately, recently, this has meant that the exact middle ground is somewhere smack dab in the middle of downtown overpriced cover-charged alco-hell. Confession: I do love the big-fancy-beer-list opportunities that drinking downtown can afford, but when I actually can't afford them, there's nothing I like better than a dive. Hence the solution: Eddie C's is about as divey as it gets without landing in the harbor, and I don't really care to know anyone who'd turn down the occasional $8 pitcher of 'Gansett and free plate of mini-pretzels. In terms of victuals, Eddie's is about as no-frills as it gets. There's something like five taps, I defy you to find a pint (all of which come served in plastic glasses, mind you) that'll run you more than about three bucks, I've never seen the bottles behind the counter move, and the bar menu includes such fare as (I kid you not) Hot Pockets. (If you want to feel really authentic, though, grab a burrito from across the street and take it to the bar. No one'll look twice.) Worth noting, though, is the atmosphere. The only real light comes from promotional neon, the walls are plastered in all sorts of signs and clippings best described as "creative", the tables have a habit of being a bit wobbly, "the game" is always on no matter what sport's in season, and the playlist stays somewhere between Barry White and the Bee Gees. Is it a little dingy? Sure. But if it leaves you with any concern about your personal safety, I have it on authority from the quasi-bouncer (a lifetime East Bostonian who will always chat you up if given the chance) that the owner's status as a former Boston police officer ensures a special kind of security. Bottom line? You either love it or hate it; for me, Eddie C's makes me realize that there are still bars in Boston where you feel like everybody could, one day, know your name. read more

If you do not appreciate Eddie C's then there is something wrong with you. Like any bar that caters to a regular clientele, they can be a little stand-offish with strangers initially - not rude at all just are likely to stay out of your space. I spent time off and on there over a 4 day period and it was GREAT. Very friendly people and great service with good prices (cash only). I met a number of the regulars and had some fun conversations. I will most certainly return on future trips. The fact it is right off the Blue line Maverick station makes it an easy place to find as well. All in all a fantastic spot! read more

Yes, double yes. The story goes: I was dressed as a prostitute for Mardi Gras and was kicked out, along with a friend, of the club we went to as soon as we got there. We ran into some guy on the train who said we should come to Eddie C's with him and his girlfriend...and I LOVE. Donna the bartender is, as has been mentioned, a sweetheart. stopped by with my SO tonight- small crowd for a saturday w/ both the bruins and red sox playing. staff was very friendly, quick to help, tough on their mask policy which was appreciated. polite and respective crowd with mixed backgrounds...prob won't be back but worth the visit. read more

Three stars because, as far as I can tell almost a month later, no permanent damage has been done. The thing is, I barely remember my time in Eddie C's, which is just the way you need your last stop on a pub crawl, on your last night in an unfamiliar town, to be. I can't say if it's dirty because this was the site of beer number 12 or 13 that night and it really just didn't matter - but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. I can't say if it's cheap because money's no object in that state - but I'm pretty sure this place is easy on the wallet. I can say that it is right next to the T and I don't remember anything from the time I left there until the next morning, when I woke up in last night's clothes on the couch, sans cell phone (it was on the roof ... another story). If you live in the area, suck it up and tie one on before you go home after a long night. You deserve it. read more

There's something to be said for the local dive bar. I was served $5 wine with a smile, the patrons were friendly, and it was super easy to get to from the airport, with easy parking. Totally casual crowd and zero pretense... it is what it is. Works for me. read more

Now this is what I call a dive bar! 9 dollars for a pitcher of beer, the bartenders are a bit older but are very nice and attentive, you can tell they've been working here for a while and really enjoy their jobs. The crowd is a strange mix of folks, but I've come to expect that while I'm out in East Boston. They're all very friendly though, I think it could be a good place to go drink if you felt like making some friends. They've got a jukebox that continuously pumps whatever random music people feel like playing. I got to hear some salsa music, rap, and I think a Barednaked Ladies song if I'm not mistaken. The only two things I didn't enjoy about this place were that the house lights came on waaaaaay before last call, so we were sitting in the full lights for about an hour before we left. So, I am from out of town and we come into Boston every year for business in August. I eat at Legal Seafood, go to some of the nicest clubs in downtown and I can honestly say, my best times are at Eddie C's in Maverick Square. The folks there (both the owner Eddie and his friends of 50 plus years) know each other from grade school, most were raised right there and above all else, they have some of the funniest stories and best jokes of all time. Sure it is considered by many to be a dive bar, but I promise you the experience there and the friendly people is worth every penny you will spend, and that won't be many because it is priced like the early 90's. The bar tender JT ran the place on his own. There seems to be the regulars that come in for their usuals but in such a populated area, being there for about 2 hours, showed new turn outs. My girlfriend & I decided to pop our heads in and were pleasantly surprised. Carrying 5 draughts Budweiser, Bud light, Coors, Pabst and narragansett was merely a small disappointment, only because we are craft beer drinkers. We decided to get a pitcher of Budweiser and it was so fresh you would of thought the draught lines were changed that day. Cozy , with a juke box at the end of the bar. JT made such an impression we felt at home and safe, despite the location and late night. JT may have converted us to Budweiser drinkers at least at his bar. read more

I need to chime in on this one. As one who is always on the prowl for a good dive bar, this one certainly fits the bill. I have been here twice now, and both times after a few to many downtown. I'm not sure I would go in here sober, but after trying to make it back to East Boston before the T shuts down at night, its a great place to get a night cap. The beer selection is bud light, pabst, and the like, but thats all you need by this point. And they are seriously cheap. As in the cheapest I've seen in a long time. (My friends hate the cheese dust I leave on their furniture):( Well cheeseball lovers rejoice!!!! Eddie Cs has a whole day dedicated to cheese balls. I came here one Sunday, not expecting much, but when My party was greeted with a plate of the amazingly round cheese balls....I fell in love. The decor is rustic and gives you a feel of a steel plant in the 1940s, which makes the aesthetic of the orange glow from those balls all that more glorious.... after eating three plates full, I was stuffed. Come on Sunday and fill you gourd with all the cheesiness your stomach can muster. I know I will be back!!! read more

This bar is so great. It's 100% a dive but there are some things that separate it from your average Boston spots of this flavor. They have actual good beer on draft but it's at a much cheaper price than average (Stone IPA for $6!), there's a great jukebox (not touchtunes) filled with classic R&B, bartenders are nice but in that sort of cold New England way that assures you they're being genuine, and the crowd is super mixed. I've been to plenty of dirty, grimy watering holes and while I love a simple humble spot to drink, I don't like the clientele at many. Eddie C's is gay-friendly, has a wide range of ages present (20s straight through to 70s and all in between), POC are present and welcomed, and it's not just sloppy drunks but anyone looking for a fun night out. Cheap beer, that's all I can say. The bartender is, indeed, a sweetheart...when she pays attention to the customers. I stopped by on a weekday evening with two other people in the bar, ordered a beer and a shot, played some keno and won $8 on my ticket. Went to order another round and play another round of keno and was ignored for 40 minutes (no joke)...Bartender twice went to her tip jar, played two rounds of keno for HERSELF and ignored my empty drinks and keno ticket/money basically hanging off the bar. I then said "excuse me" three times, and she was distracted watching wheel of fortune. I love dive bars like Sullivan's Tap and Whiteys, but this place is just a bad bar. This place is definitely a dive, but I love it. Ive been many times and its got great drinks for extremely cheap! The staff is extremely friendly, something you wouldn't expect when you first walk in and see the usual crowd. The people are all friendly and talkative as well, after they have a couple drinks. Donna is the nicest woman ever, and Annie is very friendly as well. I wouldn't bring my girlfriend here, but when I wanna catch a game with some guys, its the best place around. read more
