I am Latino and have fine, straight hair. I'm raised in NJ, right across Manhattan, and I'm particular with my cuts. They all should/need to end with a straight-blade razor to shape every thing up as a finishing touch. This is my fourth try of getting a cut in DC/NOVA. I haven't had the best luck, all of the places I've been to (Hair Cuttery in Crystal City, Grooming Lounge in DC, and Pete's Barbershop in Westover) just do not know how to give a sharp, clean cut. A friendly old guy with dreadlocks was my barber. I went in on a Friday at 2PM and didn't have to wait at all - I'm always hesitant to get cut by the barber who is not occupied with a customer but I didn't want to be rude. Environment = 4/5 --------------------------- Cool reggae music is bumping, picture of Bob Marley, old barbershop feel. Cut = 2/5 ------------- All I ask for a 3 on top, and a 2 on the side. Anyone off my old block can deliver a solid fade and shape things up accordingly. My shape-up on the side is garbage and I have hairs sticking out because he didn't run the buzzer over my scalp diligently enough. The only thing that was done well is the fade on the back of my neck. I also had to actually request for a straight-blade finish - this is my pet peeve!! In my old NJ neighborhood, this is standard practice for any barbershop to make sure you look fresh. All in all, this might cut it for other people but not for me. They charged me $17 for a cut and, out of respect, I gave $3 tip. ON TO THE NEXT ONE - I'm determined to find a barber that can deliver a decent cut in this area. read more

As nature has decided I need less hair I stopped going to barbershops many years ago and instead invested in some clippers. This has worked out well for me over the years and I thought I would never see a professional barber again. However I was invited to be a groomsman in one of my oldest friends' weddings, so I decided to keep it professional and return to a barbershop for the first time in years for a proper cut. Walked in and got a seat immediately with a barber in the back. I'm not sure of his name but I think he might have been Jamaican. Asked him to cut it as short as possible without being bald and give me a shape up. He did a good job, the haircut came out nice and he lined me up proper. While I won't be a regular because I just don't have the hair follicles to justify the cost of a professional haircut and my clippers at home do just a good a job, I still enjoyed the brief camaraderie that is standard in most barbershops. Good staff, good cuts and I believe the standard prices of modern haircuts. If you're lucky enough to still have that full head of hair, I'd give them a chance. read more

I went to Eddie's hair creations to get a shape up . Eddie cut my hair, however the haircut was quite disappointing. What I would like to point out especially was the lack of sharpness in the lines and dullness of the fade. I don't fault the man for this, but I was hard to understand what Eddie was saying the whole time. Overall I rate the experience a 2/5 or 4/10. I've been going to this shop since 2013 and the customer service has always been subpar. Long waits, bad cuts (from some), and unprofessional barbers. Especially B, the tall one with a beard. I've been his customer for numerous years, even going there with friends who needed a cut. He's always on the phone and when he does talk to me it's in a condescending way. The only good thing about it is that it's cheap ($25) for a standard cut. I'm gonna look for a new place that actually values me as a customer. Note to the barbers: If your customer doesn't want to have a conversation with you, just cut the hair and leave them alone. read more

Great barbers, great place, great service. Kwame is my go to guy, quick efficient and knows a lot about basketball. There is always poppin music and sports on the TV. This barbershop fits the stereotype in the best way possible. Lively debate, cast of characters and regulars rolling in at all times. They even open early and despite the sign saying they close at 7, I have seen all of them stay til almost 9 to make sure everyone is serving. Did I mention, they take credit cards? Called here and was able to walk in with no wait. I ended up getting the trim. They offer outline, $8; trim, $12; and full hair cut, $16. Great experience all the way through - congenial barber who used to cut hair in SW had worked at "Eddie's" (don't let the "...Hair Creations" part of the name throw you off - this is a barber shop) for the last 6 months. He even told me how he had a woman come in who said he did a better job than the $100 dollar salon she had been going to in dupont. Ladies, I love my natural barber cut. I am able to get a GREAT cut and still maintain my femininity. The shop is very welcoming and clean. It took me 12 years to find a barbershop that does not go silent when a woman walk in the door. Don't really have any hair but get compliments all the time, especially after a fresh cut. Even-though you could not go wrong with any of the barber cutting your hair , I prefer Koffi. Reggae music and barbers that are very easy on the eye makes Eddies a very pleasant experience. I made a 2:00 pm appointment that one of the barbers got confirmed on the phone without them giving me a barber I had an appointment with. When I got into the shop around 1:50pm, I was asked who I had an appointment with and I replied "No one specifically, you just confirmed me for 2:00 pm." After a nod, I watched as all five barbers took customers before honoring my appointment time. At around 2:45 I got into the chair of a gentleman who works from the right of the shop wears a cap. NEVER GET IN HIS CHAIR! I wear my hair in waves. I was looking for a trim during my wolf, so I asked him for a STANDARD trim and taper. Purely the Basics: A Taper with a two all round. This is something a novice barber should be able to do in their sleep. He began by asking me "2 with or against the grain" which was my first red flag... because every barber in their right mind knows not to cut a man with waves against the grain to mess up his formation. Nonetheless, I told him to cut with the grain and the cut started. I wish it hadn't. After taking the two-guard off the top he decided to switch to a 1 guard without telling me (which made me have to restart the formation of my waves at that point). I was concerned and upset. I even asked him if the guard he switched to was still a 2, (because I know how much hair a 2 guard leaves on my head) and he replied "yes" but refused to show me the guard he just put away after I asked him to. At this point, it was already too late. He then tapered my back but left my sides unfaded, even with the rest of my head. This leads me to believe he didn't even know what a taper fade was when I asked for it. Next, he gave me the worst shape-up of my life. He took a huge portion of hair of my hairline back. After asking for a taper with a 2-guard around... I ended up with a one-guard Ceasar and a hairline that looked worse than when I came in. After the hair cut, I went to inspect and visibly was concerned about my hairline foremost. He asked "Is there a problem with the cut" I told him "yes you pushed my hairline back". He was visibly guilty yet replied, "Nah that's just where your hair is lighter and receding." I was very disappointed I had a business meeting that night and I looked unkept after that $30 haircut. I don't know if he is a new guy but I do know he should not be allowed to cut hair for the sake of this barbershop's reputation and the customers who go there. 0/10 shouldn't have even paid to not be given what I requested. read more

This is my spot in the DuPont/AdMo neighborhood to get my "Hair Did"! Black barbers are surprisingly hard to find in NW D.C., but these guys hold it down. No-nonsense, have your favorite or take the first chair open, they'll fade and style how you specify. Prices went up to $20 a cut, plus that $5 tip, so it's a bit steep; but they take their time and do things right! With the reggae piped in-full effect, this is my local go to spot! I had a haircut before from here and wasn't too happy with it, but I went again the other day and had a great experience. I called and walked up right as they were closing and the owner still sat me down and cut my hair. He was very nice and professional, and gave me a great fade even though I didn't give him totally clear directions. On top of being welcoming, his years in the game really show (he told me he's owned the shop for 20 something years) because he saw that my skin was breaking out, and without making me feel bad he began telling me that my problem was how I was shaving. I told him I had a derm appointment soon to figure out my skin issues and he countered by telling me I didn't need it, explaining that black men shouldn't use certain razors and recommended a medicated bar soap which he sold in the shop. He was so nice and it was only $4 so I just got it. I started using it only yesterday and my skin is ALREADY CLEARING UP. I literally have spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on different products so I'm just shocked that he was able to diagnose and treat my skin issues on the spot. read more

The name of this place makes it sound like it's a bit more than it is, but then again, if you've ever noticed how intricate the haircuts of some black men are or had to wait your turn while the barbers meticulously sculpt the hair of some patrons, "Hair Creations" really is not a stretch at all. Personally I don't play by the rules when I get my hair cut. My cousin works in a salon and teaches cosmetology in Atlanta and when I told her that when I go to the barber I don't have a preferred guy who cuts my hair, I just go with the first person available, she told me that is not right. My bad! But I just want to get my hair cut efficiently and attractively and I'm perhaps too introverted to want to shoot the sh!t at the barber shop. Or maybe because my father cut my hair growing up and didn't do such a good job IMHO, I just do not like getting my hair cut, so the faster I can get in and out, the better. And given that I am a member of the follicularly challenged nowadays, I can't see spending a lot of money or making an appointment to get my hair cut. What does any of this have to do with Eddie's? Not much, but if you've read this far, stick with me, cuz now is where it gets relevant. If you're like me and you just want a fairly basic fade or a trim, any of the barbers can take care of you since there are usually one or two waiting for customers even as some customers are waiting for their preferred hair artisans. My last visit I walked in and was out in half an hour. Score! In fact, you can make an appointment with any of the guys, but you have to pay extra for the reserved time, so cheap-o that I am I usually just takes my chances and it usually works out fine, especially if I get there within 45 minutes of closing time during the week or late afternoon on a Saturday. The guys all know me and I tip generously since I don't play by the rules and I want to continue to get good service. I like the West Indian vibe at this place and hope it survives the neighborhood's gentrification. Another barber I know closed a few years back, but then a new one opened right on U Street and it's thriving. Given the new place's long waits I'm fine sticking with Eddie's. p.s. I realize that there is a certain culture and language of black hair that I may never fully appreciate. Nevertheless, I was fairly certain that the statement: "No, do not shave a line into my head." had enough universality, had a sufficient lack of ambiguity, so as to transcend all barriers. I was wrong. Take the journey with me: When asked what I wanted, I mentioned that my hair parts itself at a certain place, and also asked that he please not go shorter than a 5 on the back. Before we even get to the craziest part, the whole thing was a bizarre and oddly painful experience. It felt like he kept hacking at me with the razor, not running it over, but coming at me from a distance. When noticing that the back felt really short, I asked what he'd used back there, and he said "Oh, maybe like a 4." (Note that 4 is less than 5.) But let's get to the best part: He then asks me: "Where do you want the line?" I said something close to: "Whoa, whoa! What do you mean? What line? You're not shaving a line into a my head, are you? I just mentioned where the hair parts." He laughed and said no, that's what he meant, where do I want the part? I said: "Phew, you scared me for a second there! I thought you were going to shave a line into my head! The part is around here. [point to spot on head] And no, don't shave a line into my head." He then turns me away from the mirror so that I can't see what he's doing. He seems to be digging into the top of my scalp with a razor. I don't want to freak out, don't want to keep questioning him, especially when we just completely clarified that there was no line to be shaved into my head. But it sure feels as if there's a line being shaved into my head. Finally, as there seems to be no other explanation for what's going on, I spin around back towards the mirror. Sure enough, he has just shaved a line into my head. Not a thin line either; no, he had carved out a nice section of scalp. I couldn't believe it. I tried to leave, but he insisted that I let him clean up the rest. I asked why he did this, when I had just clarified not to shave a line into my head, and when he had just agreed not to shave a line into my head. He had nothing to say. Another guy working there informed him: "A part just means that's where the hair falls." Thanks. Would've been great if he could've shared that 10 minutes earlier, or maybe even taught him that before allowing him to cut hair in their shop. To this other guy's credit, he at least told him not to accept any money from me. In an attempt to make light of a ridiculous situation, I may go as Vanilla Ice for Halloween this year, If someone can lend me a Miami Hurricanes sweatshirt, that's really all I need at this point. It's hard to find a barbershop that 1) doesn't stop the music when a lady comes through the door to get a cut and 2) cut and still make you look feminine. There is something about this shop that reminds me of home (I'm from a southern country in Africa). Perhaps it's the music, the customer service, hospitality and professionalism. I have about 4 great barbershops in DC and Maryland that I go to. This one is actually starting to become my ultimate favorite and I'm always a little sad when I can't make it over. I can only speak on the guy in the middle chair. I'm a young black male, and he had no clue what he was doing. He just kept saying "I got you". He left my line ridiculously crooked, and there were still hairs sticking up from where he missed spots. Plus he gave me a crooked fade. HOW DO YOU GIVE A CROOKED FADE!? When I asked him to fix it, he scoffed and gave me attitude. Worst haircut I've had to date, plus they don't tell you they charge you an extra dollar if you pay by card. Sometime in 1993, my wife recommended that I try these guys. They were close to our home, even though I never knew or heard of them. Well, I came in to try them and I never left. Yep, they still cut my hair (what's left of it). Over the years, I've gotten first class cuts from Kofi (formerly called Eddie), Samar, Kwasi and a few other great guys (like El) that have since moved on. Twenty five years after it's founding, "Eddie's" is still making people of all colors in DMV look very good. I like their great attention to hygiene. They disinfect each and every blade, comb, scissors and clipper after each use. They sweep the floor frequently. They have a kick-ass selection of reggae and popular music from Africa to keep you tapping your feet until they get to you. Plus, a great selection of magazines. I especially recommend their veterans, Samar, Kofi and Kwasi. But, others are good. read more
