When I called on a late Sunday afternoon, a barber said my favorite barber, Lynn, had left 10 minutes ago but would call to see if she could return. Sure enough, the other barber called me back and asked if I remained interested in seeing Lynn. I was. Your instruction will be ignored and you'll be essentially pig shaved whether you wanted it or not. But you'll be turned away from the mirror so you won't know until it's too late. Went in wanting just a trim and to even out a bad haircut I'd gotten previously. Said that much, even giving specific clipper numbers to use and length to cut. All of that was ignored. I got the shortest haircut I've had in years, rendering my hair unstylable for likely weeks, destroyed my sideburns without ever saying I wanted them trimmed (I didn't) and cut my ear to boot. Do not go unless you want a near buzz cut, because that's what you'll get, instructions be damned. read more

Annie hooked me up with CLEAN bald fade, I'm Black and Filipino so I have a specific texture that not everyone cuts correctly, but Annie DELIVERED! Are you a female that shaves her head or has a style that you use fades with? Then you know how uncomfortable it can be walking into many barber shops to get your fade. Most shops will specifically say in their advertising ..."gentleman's cuts." So it can be a touch uncomfy walking into a new shop for your first time bc you don't know how they'll react. I've shaved my head many times in my twenties but recently decided to lop off all my curls again. Right bf Xmas I shaved it all off. I needed a touch up for my fade because that is usually what my 2-3 week maintenance calls for. I walked in a little after 10:30am on a Tuesday and this plays STAYED busy, y'all. There were 2 people getting their hair cut and while I was sitting 3 more walked in. There were 3 barbers hard at work. Now--i'll admit, when I walked in I definitely got stares ... Like...is this a female ....? Haha. But after the initially syaring--they got down to business. Which, I was grateful for. I hung up my coat and scarf and grabbed a seat to wait. I wasn't sitting for longer than 2 min before someone told me to hop in a seat. I attached the two reference photos I showed for what I wanted. In essence I wanted a low sunburst fade. I like a bald fade when I get a fade. I didn't at ALL get what I asked for, lol...like not even a little. You can take a gander at my reference photos and what I ultimately got to see what I mean. But I wasn't madt at all. I just sort of took it in stride and just realized that this wasn't going to be the shop to execute my ideal look. I'm also WILDLY surprised bc never have I ever not gotten a razor clean up at the end of a barber shop visit. I had to go home to clean myself up with a razor. Just because a woman is getting a fade, doesn't mean she shouldn't also get the same services that the men also pay for, you know? I didn't have a bad experience AT ALL. These folks are kind, professional and good humans. The shop is small and clean. And they have a good flow of steady and loyal clientele. People walked in, and it was CLEAR they not only remember them, but also what they wanted. I did observed the cuts walking out and you're definitely not going to get the really sharp, suave fades that a more specialized shop will crack out, but what you will get is a super affordable, clean, and basic clean up. Another point of contention for me--is.that they charged me $30 for my cut. Their Yelp page says they charge $25 for a ladies cut and I definitely didn't get anything fancy--as you can see from my photo. So I'm confused why they charged me $30--unless their prices have recently changed (which in this economic climate, makes perfect sense--i support a raise in prices!) I also noticed that their display window of price listings was blank. It'd be helpful to have that updated as well. So, here's what I think. I'll definitely go elsewhere to get the more tailored, sleeker designs I'm looking for, but I 100% wouldn't hesitate to come here for a quick clean up. And next time, I'll make sure to speak up and ask for the razor clean up at the end so I don't have to haphazardly attempt it on my own at home! read more

I went in here over the weekend. All of the folks who work there are very nice. Unfortunately, after explaining how I wanted my hair cut, the gentleman proceeded to cut my hair way too short and took my sideburns up about an inch and a half, when I specifically asked him to leave them. Even if you do not have a working understanding of the English Language, you should know the key words and phrases that refer directly how one makes a living. I guess I will need to visit a different shop, and maybe pay more to ensure the operator understands me. I guess that is my privilege. read more

I will make this to the point. I have been going to this place four times a year for the last 6 years, since I moved to the city. Its close to my condo, its old school and they are fast. Went a few weeks ago and got a hair cut. I really did not pay much attention as they usually do a great job. I went home and went on with my day. I had to leave the next day to go out of state. I noticed when I got out of the shower that the bangs were too long. I did not have time to go back that day because I had to travel. I returned home a week later and returned to the barber I explained really nicely that I wasn't happy because of the bangs but the rest was great. They sat me down to do the front, then proceeded to do all of my hair over, I explained it was not necessary but the barber continued. The finished product was great. I stood up when it was done and asked how much I owed. I assumed since I explained that a week earlier I was not happy with what I had gotten that they would say I owed nothing and I would just tip the guy. Well, they recharged me the full price. I am disappointed as I really liked the place but will not be going back. Be sure to double check your hair cut before leaving this place and be VERY clear with what you want. Don't think tat they will remember, even when they say they do. Now off to find a new barber! read more

This was one of the most reliable barbers nearby and I've been going there for several years. It hurts to give them a bad rating while Luis still works there but I've had two haircuts in a row from the other barbers and they are truly awful. Some of my hair is twice as long as the rest.. because he was watching a football game on his phone while cutting my hair. For where this shop is located, that's absurd. If you can see one of the three decent employees, go get a haircut from this place. If you don't know who those three are, go somewhere else. read more

A disaster! I've been trying to find a reasonably priced barber that offers hot shaves and a haircut cheap enough to use often - my hair grows fast, so it's nice to have a place that can handle maintenance more than a total overhaul. That said, I went here based on the yelp reviews. The space seemed decent enough, and 3/4 chairs were occupied - always a good sign. I sat down in the second chair with a woman who was sitting in the bay window when i walked in. I told her that i wanted to keep my hair style the way it was, but just wanted it cleaned up, and that I wanted a hot shave as well. She flipped my chair around so that I couldn't see the mirror, and tore in with the buzzers - as soon as she took a rather noticeable chunk out with one swipe, I noticed that it was far too short, but it was already done. I figured she would at least cut the top to match my old style, albeit, much shorter. I was wrong. She spent a solid 20 minutes hacking away, and afterwards, I felt like it was back in basic training - there was just a 1/4 inch of hair all around where there used to be at least 2 inches! Oh well, it was done. We moved onto the shave, and as soon as she started I instantly regretted the decision. She did a full pass over my entire face with electric trimmers, despite the fact that I did not have enough facial hair to even possibly warrant their use. After that she whipped out the straight blade and proceeded to go against the grain on every single part of my face. It burned for two days afterwards, and resulted in at least one ingrown hair! Maybe I'm just cheap or haven't fully processed inflation, but I'm just going to suck it up and spend a few more dollars for a real place next time. Do yourself a favor and save the money. read more

They are decent at cutting hair if you need a regular no frills haircut. The quality of the haircut is severely lacking when figuring the price $21/haircut. They do a weird thing I've never seen before which is turn you away from the mirror, by the time they turn you back to the mirror, it's too late to fix what they may or may not have messed up. This place is a mill. I would say it's fine for kids getting haircuts, balding gentlemen trying to get a trim. But, if you have a good head of hair and want to maintain some semblence of style, fashion, or just Line it up this is not your place. I would only say this--if you must come here, make sure you tell your barber exactly what to do, and I mean everything, not generalities, but actual trim length numbers etc. read more

Getting my haircut always seems like a chore. The faster you can get me in and out with a decent haircut, the better. That is exactly what Capital Barber delivered. The barbers are quick and efficient, making the wait pretty painless. They are a walk-in only operation, so get buzzed in and wait for one of six chairs to open up. My haircut took a total of 15 minutes, and I was really pleased with the results. I would highly recommend this to any men in the Union Station / Capital Hill area that need a quick cut. My only issue is that the payment process is a little clunky. While they accept credit cards, they don't accept tips on credit cards. You need to use their ATM for 75 cents to pull out cash. I don't understand this business model, especially in the era of Square... but I'll run with it and remember to bring extra cash next time. read more

I love Capitol Barber. There really is no other place I'd rather go for a haircut. The staff is very quick and efficient - I'm usually in and out of there in 15-20 minutes no matter the barber. That's not to say that they are not careful, though! They are excellent about adhering to how you want your hair to be cut. Also, even if they are slammed with customers, the wait is never long. Capitol Barber is pretty inexpensive - $20 for a men's haircut. $25 if you want a men's haircut + shampooing. The only thing that bothers me is that you cannot tip via credit/debit card - you must tip in cash. They have an ATM on-site through which you can make a withdrawal ($0.75 ATM service fee), though. Otherwise, this place is great. read more

As far as barber shops go, this is the best. They're very friendly, very good and inexpensive. I don't go that often,and despite an absence of six months since my last haircut here Louis remembered me, what I'm doing, what year in school I am, and what my summer work plans were. Amazing!! And they're always very thorough, taking their time, not lacerating my head with the clippers (very easy to do when you get your head shaved - many times, people think you want skin removed too!), and making it look natural- you don't come out with that "I just got a haircut" look. Very impressive! All that, and a men's cut is $18. While I can't speak for how they do with women's hair, I definitely recommend this place for guys. My only complaint: they're open from 10 am - 7 pm Monday through Friday. I wish they opened a bit earlier, but it's worth the wait. read more

*4.5* Ben got a haircut there today for the first time and it's the best one he's gotten in DC. Even on a Friday afternoon, it was really busy. We were able to walk in and it wasn't long before one of the four barbers working was able to accommodate him. It was definitely a no frills type of place (they didn't have someone to clean up the hair off the floor, just enough time to blow dry it off the seat before the next person) and I think they only do men's hair, but they were quick and gave him exactly what he asked for. I've never had my hair cut here, but my husband has been coming here for YEARS. It's a small, no frills, basic cut shop for men and women (although he's never seen a woman in here getting her hair cut, just dudes). Hair cuts are cheap ($22 for guys, $25+ for gals) and there are 6 (I think, maybe 7) chairs all in a row with a few bench seats for those waiting. It gets really crowded on the weekend so you might have to wait for your cut, but the stylists work quickly. read more

I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a haircut here either. And the cherry on top has got to be the hot lather, straight razor shave on the back of your neck at the end of the cut. This place sucks. I went twice - 6 months apart - and all I can say is that they're consistent, because they butchered my hair twice in precisely the same way. Me: "Use the LONGEST guard on the clippers or, better yet, use the scissors. Please keep the length. Just a trim. And only 1/4" or so off the top." Me now: NEARLY BUZZED. I look like an 8th grader - close cropped all around. In fact, when I looked around the shop, nearly everybody ELSE getting their hair cut had super short cuts, too.
