My Favorite Library! The staff is very helpful and always happy about doing what they do. I love how they have weekly activities like making pins, planting succulents, yoga, henna , and much more. What I really appreciate them doing is that they feed the homeless and they also have days where they give free haircuts to homeless. They also provide movie nights where you can bring the kids to watch for free! Location has parking available, computers, restrooms. I came in yesterday and was helped by the Lady in Glasses (super cool staff) and we asked if they had any kid friendly witch books. She went out of her way and started searching and helping us get the book. She then came back out with a cute Witch Pin another staff had made. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! Everyone is welcomed. read more

Would never have thought to come to this library if it wasn't to collect the Architecture stamps from all the libraries. There is some street parking in the front and I think a main parking lot in the back. the staff is friendly and it's always good to have a local library to come to! A read more

It's sad what this library has become. The staff is wonderful but there are so few books here, now. Most of the non-fiction books are outdated. I visited for the first time in a long time recently and remembered why I hadn't been back in years; There was a distinct awful smell in the adult seating areas and people slumped over at the tables and computers or talking to themselves incoherently. I just went there to work on my computer and left because of how uncomfortable the environment was between the odors and the muttering. Hopefully this was just a one-off but I won't return to see if that's the case. read more

Location: Good location on Sunset Blvd. near the heart of Echo Park. Work/Study: Really good place to come study, decent amount of tables. Relatively quiet (of course for a public library). Geeky extra comment: I personally have a hard time finding the perfect chair/table combination to boost my productivity when I work/study. The chair/table combination at this library is one of my favorite in Los Angeles by far. Extras: Free Wi-Fi and chargers for days. I always leave the library with all my electronic devices at 100% battery. Upshot: Getting coffee daily to work/study at coffee shops can get expensive. Libraries are free alternatives, and although some of them may not have the comfort and quietness that certain coffee shops provide, I think this library does not disappoint. My neighborhood library...it used to be the Echo Park branch but this is way closer to my house. I enjoy coming here with my nephews 'cause there are always kids in the children are where they can play, read and interact. The places is always organized and clean. Staff is very attentive and friendly. Staff and visitors tend to forget this is a library and can get noisy at times, but this is Echo Park/Angeleno Heights you know! The parking is wide and the good thing about this library is that Tierra Mia is close so you can grab your horchata latte and enjoy it here while flipping through magazines or reading your favorite book. I haven't had to check out a book just yet. read more

Cool arts performance support (Drama West) on the occasional Saturday. Outstanding media library to choose from. Recent (ish) music to check out, and lots of good DVD movies, too. Ok so I read all of the prior reviews and was fully prepared to deal with some grumpy white librarian... well we have been here three times and have had nothing but a pleasant experience. It's clean, cool and comfortable. On occasion it gets a little loud at the front desk which is right next to the computer stations but that not a deal breaker... I love this place... great hours, good parking and all in all a very pleasant library. I come here to print and every time I pick up a few books. If you ask them they will extend your due date. No idea why they have negative ratings. I guess the sour faced mean lady is either gone or improved her attitude based on the negative feedback. This is my library now.. it's not that close to where I live but def worth the drive. read more

This library is very sparsely stocked. Don't expect to come here, browse, and take home a book. The building itself is very nicely laid out and the children's section is great. There's always parking in the lot out back (entrance on Alvarado). Most of the staff is great. This review is three stars because of one person. There is one library who usually works the information/holds/fines desk who is super grumpy and rude. She's an older woman with short blondish/brown hair and a permanent frown. She barely acknowledges people, has a habit of slamming books on the counter and doesn't respond to friendliness, smiles, politeness -- or sometimes any talking at all. Even when asking her direct questions like "when is this due?" will sometimes get zero response, a glare or a book slammed on the counter. I don't know why her attitude is so awful, but it's completely unprofessional and makes me dread picking up holds at the library if she's working. After another awful experience with her today, I've decided that if I see her working I'll come back later so I don't have to deal with her attitude. read more

I am one of those voracious readers that jeanne w. just described. For some odd reason I find myself coming back to this library only to find a very small variety of non-fiction books that I keep looking for. If you're into fiction, this may satiate your appetite. As for me, I've read at least 30 marketing books this year, 10 cookbooks, 10 random business books, and picked up some cool/random things.... but not at this library. I do love the atmosphere, the people who work there, the ample parking ( ample because I guess most people walk or bike there) and the cleanliness and newness. It's bright and the tables look inviting. There are no screaming kids on computers. ( thank goodness) I went to check out the French language section today... which consisted on 10 outdated books and a couple of old looking CD's... so I'd say come here if you're checking out Angels and Demons or Girl with a Pearl Earring.. learning how to cook, be happy in the workplace, possibly build a resume and wash your dog the right way, but if you're trying to learn web design, quickbooks, search engine marketing, french or chinese, try the Central Library in Downtown. I did find a cool book on Monkeys that I am looking for on Amazon right now. read more

I have never thought that I would write a review about a library, but looky here!! I am! Why you may ask?? Because of this stupid, RUDE A$$ White lady at the circulation desk. I have gone to this library numerous times and have always dreaded getting HER to help me out. I don't know her name, but she is always there. I know that there is usually a Hispanic lady (super nice), a Black guy (a chill, nice guy), and that RUDE A$$ White lady. I have seen the way she talked down to people even when they asking simple questions; even to a 14 year old boy for goodness sake that I just wanted to slap her face right there when she did that. GRRRRR I really, really disliked that lady. Even my sister DESPISES going to that library because of her. It's like she hates her job or something. Ughhhh Seriously if one day you go to this library and you, unfortunately, get her at the circulation, ask a question and see the way she answers it (focus on her tone and body gesture; you can't miss it). She is a disgrace to be called a librarian, and I know for a FACT that I'm going to be a BETTER librarian than her; studying to get my master to become one now. It is for this particular reason that I go to the other nearby libraries, Echo Park Library and Chinatown Library. P.S. The other employees are fine, especially the people at the information desk. I come here to get work done for school- it is quiet enough, there are plenty of outlets. If you come on a non busy day you can get a table to yourself which are large- if you have to share there is plenty of room between seats that you can still spread out. The internet connection works well. It's clean. There is a coffee shop right around the corner on Alvarado, a gas station for snacks. Free parking for an unlimited amount of time. What more can I ask for?! I don't come here to check out books so can't say anything for what their book selection is like. Really, I can say that this is a good place to study. read more

This review is really about the LAPL system as a whole - I love it! I almost completely stopped buying or keeping books once I realized I could go online, order any book I wanted, and they would deliver it to my local branch. Then when I'm done, I can drop it off at any branch. If I'm not done, I go online to renew. If you're trying to get a new hit, it could take some time before you get a copy, but otherwise it's effortless. Ahh, the joys of big city living. My only beef is the short time you get DVDs for - if no one else has requested it, why not let you renew? This is especially annoying for things like exercise DVDs that you might want to view more than once. As for the Edendale branch itself, it is one of the nicer branch locations I've been in. The architecture isn't as cool as say Filipe de Neve over on 6th street, but then it's not as stinky either. The branch collection feels larger than the nearby Echo Park branch. read more

Like other reviewers, I live in the area and use the "Hold" function to the fullest. A book pops into my head, I jump onto the LAPL website and place a hold on it, and then it appears in my neighborhood, with my name on it. It's a little bit like Christmas. The wi-fi sometimes slows to what seems like a complete stop (in a pinch you could run to the Starbucks inside Lucy's laundromat, up the street, or to Stories at Echo Park Blvd.). On the other hand, the guy at the loan desk enthused about the awesomeness of Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways, which he was checking out for me. And he was right. All in all, the Edendale branch, and the LAPL's magnificent Hold feature, is one of my favorite things about living here. read more

Yes, Emily R, it makes you a nerd ... but we readers/nerds need to stick together. I've had a crush on libraries ever since I was old enough to figure out what those squiggly lines on paper were, some ... many ... years ago. I'm one of those crazy people who always has to have a book to read, or I might explode, or have unfilled extra time or something. I just like to keep my brain active and challenged, or just sometimes escape from a hard day. It's a true love affair. But I had been unfaithful to libraries in the last couple of decades, deciding instead to *buy* all of my books - or not buy something I wanted to read at all, because I was mad at how much it cost. What a fool I was. So the economy tanked and my partner and I decided to cut costs wherever possible. No more landline? Check. No more L.A. Times. Argh ... check. No more Whole Foods? Semi-check, with more Trader Joe's and Vons thrown in. But no one was touching my books. Until my partner started going to the Edendale library. What's happened in the last 20 years will boggle your mind. No not with the nice, inviting little Edendale branch - although I do love to go and discover something unexpected. But with the whole LA Public Library system. Now that I've got a card (and one of those tabs for my key chain), I can search the entire system's catalog, reserve a book (whatever branch it's in) and *it will be sent to me at the Edendale branch*. So every day, I open up my Amazon wish list and see if the book is available in the LAPL catalog - and about 85% of the time, it is. Reserve, wait patiently (argh!) and it magically appears for me at the Edendale branch, just a few blocks away from home. I can get anything - even those dratted new and ultra-expensive hardback editions. The love affair has been rekindled and it's red hot ... read more

I've grown up here in echo park with this library and now I take my son who enjoys the children's section that is filled with great books, a fun chalkboard, and legos the AC is the best. Also if they don't have a certain book or movie that you'd like they will order it for you, and you'll receive an email notifying you it has arrived! read more

Is it nerdy to give a library 5 stars on Yelp? Whatevs. I wasn't a huge fan of libraries unless it was the BPL in Boston or someplace equally as cool. The Edendale branch of the LAPL has changed my mind. It's so tiny but any time I need a specific book, they've got it. And it's like a 10 minute walk from my place. So convenient. read more

I can't believe the crappy reviews for this library which is in actuality a terrific branch. Allison, Bernard, Niels, all the library folk are great, helpful and pleasant. They have a lovely children's corner with playthings and of course kid's books. They even have a therapy dog on alternate Wednesday afternoons the kids can read to! There is free wifi and also library computers. As public buildings which must serve members of a diverse public I don't think some of the prior nasty posters understand that libraries have to accommodate a lot of different folks. This branch is staffed by people who love books and love to make recommendations. They are kind to everyone who visits. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. read more

On the up side: The librarians are helpful. It has a super cheap used book sale on Wednesday afternoons (if you're local you can write a check, otherwise it's cash only). There's a parking lot (the entrance is on Alvarado). There are plenty of computers, and people seem to be pretty good with sharing. It's open late and right next to about 10 bars. On the down side: This library is small. The Internet often doesn't work. I normally have to share a work table with someone else . The book selection is quite limited. The very sour-faced old woman who helped me just now honestly made my jaw drop with how rude she was when I said I would like to pay my fines, practically screaming "EXCUSE ME?" She snatched the money off the counter like I had offended her ancestors and threw the receipt toward me while ROLLING HER EYES. I was just so shocked by the whole thing that I turned around to my partner and said, "This old lady is rude as hell!" I will never, ever come to this branch again. read more

i finally happened in on a wednesday, when the 'friends of the library' hold their weekly book sale. they are a happy + positive bunch, which is inspiring. deals abound, with most recent fiction hard backs going for $1 or $3 !! there are also older, and really old books, many selling for a song. highly recommended for voracious and regular readers. read more

This library has so many issues I'm going to propose they shut it down and give any money (seems as though there is none by the state of this place) to the Echo Park and Silver Lake libraries. There are enough in the neighborhood that this place isn't needed especially because of the following: 1) The head librarian Joelle I think her name is, is atrocious. If there is any reason this library is not doing better I think she is at the helm of it. I bet there are a lot of people who do not visit this library because she is so rude and unhelpful as well as condescending. 2) book availability - It seems this library has the least amount of books of any library I have visited. The selection is very limited. 3) The parking lot. It is nice to have parking in LA but this one is sketchy as ever. There is always someone doing something (like peeing doing drugs) in it. I do not want to be harsh here about the homeless (not even sure the people hanging out in the parking lot are homeless), it's just hard to park in a place you do not feel safe. The homeless issue is important though so thinking of that, maybe instead of another library the money from this library after it closes can go towards that cause? Where can I sign a petition and maybe we can get some low income housing here instead as well? Close this library! read more

there are two major reasons why this library is awful: 1- bad business practices. they lost a book that i returned (on time) through the book drop and now i have to pay $45 in order to have that book processed and replaced. this is particularly upsetting because i did not lose the book AND i returned it in on time but due to the library's ineptitude, i will now have to pay for their mistake. 2- the head librarian, joelle dobrow, is a very unpleasant person and is almost always working at the circulation desk so it's near impossible to avoid interacting with her. she has been rude to me on several occasions, even yelling at me once when i asked if there was any new information regarding the book that they had lost. additionally, she always acts like she's doing me a gigantic favor to go and get the books from the hold shelf right behind her and, with a audible sound of annoyance, check them out. if this woman does not like having to interact with patrons, she should be working in a different capacity. otherwise, i strongly believe that she would greatly benefit from some human resources lessons in providing good customer service. read more

I like that there is a parking lot and happy to have a close library that I can get books delivered to but I dread picking them up. They have the Rudest library clerks. No matter who it is, they act like I'm ruining their day for asking a question or borrowing a book, like audible sighing and eye rolling. Wonderful community library with a great selection of books and kind and helpful staff.

Charming little space, generally easy to park, love that this library offers a safe space for kids to go after school, and that it offers free internet to people who might not be able to afford it otherwise. The librarian that everyone complains about (the older white woman who usually works the circulation desk) is extremely socially inept. I wonder if she can even help it, though, sometimes she seems like she is trying *not* to be rude but is not sure how. Last time I was there I wondered if she was personality-disordered, in which case she really might not, but in that case it would be better to have her in a situation where she had less contact with the public. I admit that *I* don't like to go through her desk, and I'm 50. Thinking about it makes me afraid that the non-white kids that deal with her might perceive it as being race-based. Having lived through that as a kid, it is pretty awful, maybe the library could help her out with some counseling. read more

If you want to have an item held for you to pick up on the same day, be ready to read their mind and provide the information they need. I called requesting to have a DVD held for me to pick up today. (Btw, out of the 50 or so branches that carry this DVD, this was only the one of the few that still has it available. If you read on, you'd know why.) Person answered expected me to read her mind and give me info she needs. No "How may I help you." or a polite request with the word "please." After a period of silence, I hear "Library card number?" like I'm supposed to read her mind requesting that number. I was surprised since other branches I frequent like Wilshire, Cahuenga, Silverlake, Pio Pico, Felipe de Neve never ask for my library card number to have a item held for same day pick up so I did not have the card on me. The card was in my car outside with my 3 kids and hubby's cards. So I told her I need to get my card and as I was getting my card, she impatiently told me that she has people in front of her and can't help me. Did not even be polite enough to ask me if I can be put on hold! Of all the library staff I met and talked to, she was not nice. For a moment, I thought I was talking to someone working for DMV. For a library that I liked to go to before and be helped with courteous staff, it's just sad to have that one person ruin the positive experiences I had at the Edendale library. read more
