Came in today to use their scanning machine since mine died. I have to admit I was completely lost within the first 5 to 10 minutes-not only on where to find the machine which was right in front of me, but also to actually use it. In addition I had lost my actual LA county library card, so thanks weren't exactly after a great start. Smh The CSA (CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL STAR) of this experience was none other than Mohsen (AKA the "silver haired fox". He was "Johnny to the rescue" in both getting me up and running with a new library ID card and assisting me on my objectives for the day here. This place is amazing. I come here for story time with my little one and it's so much fun. The library itself is very clean and the staff here are great. There is so much seating area, tables so you can study and get homework done or just research. They have these cool little rooms if you needed to have a study group or small meetings as well. They do have a bigger auditorium for events or just conferences. Their bathrooms they have to buzz you in just because there are many homeless that tend to hang here. There are also other bathrooms that are kid friendly and you need a key for those. Their kid area is great and lots of fun books and areas for them to study and they also have computers you can check out for homework and fun games. I come here once a week and love it! read more

I consider this my home library. I use to attend the Easter Egg hunts here when I was in preschool, and I have many fond memories of checking out books from the children's section. There was a period when I didn't care so much for this library and stopped coming. However, the renovations have made it a great place once again. It's a large open space with ample seating: large and medium size tables, reading chairs, and computer stations, equipped with outlets to charge your equipment and table lamps. There are three study rooms you can reserve, one large room and two tiny rooms intended for one person, just show up on the day you want to reserve a room and pick an available time slot. You have to reserve in person, and you're allowed two hours. I don't recommend reserving room "C" because it shares a wall with the men's restroom and you'll have the unpleasant experience of constantly hearing the door slam. I could only take about fifteen minutes of that before giving up my reservation. You can also check out a laptop if you need one, they have plenty. The library has been surprisingly quiet on my visits, even with little kids in the children's section. Parents seem to be respectful of the library and do a good job of keeping their tots quiet. The librarians have been very, very nice and accommodating. As with all libraries there are a few creepers and weirdos, so you shouldn't leave your belongings or small children unattended, but for the most part the library feels safe and comfortable. Ideal for studying or getting work done. read more

Another great public library in West Los Angeles. I would come here a lot too when i worked out here. Library is not as big as the Santa Monica one, not very much parking spaces too. The staff are very nice, helpful and knowledgeable. This includes the circulation desk, reference librarians, supervisors and manager. The parking lot is ample and convenient. I think everyone in LA county should have a County of Los Angeles library card. Why? Because they have a ton of great online resources that will save you oodles of money, that's why. More on that later. Here are a few details about my visit: The parking lot was full. Turns out some of the people in the building next door use it that aren't supposed to be using it. Street parking is available but not abundant unless you want to j-walk across Overland, as there are many more parking places on the other side of the street. The closest parking place I found on the library side the street was about 1/4 mile away. I actually don't plan on visiting this library again because it's not close to me, but it's a very nice library if you're in the area I highly recommend it. Plenty of room inside, well furnished, and nicely laid out. I was just there to get a library card and Petrella, one of the librarians helped me out. She was terrific and handed me my new library card within a couple of minutes. My main reason for getting an LA County Library card is because of their online resources. For instance, they have Lynda tutorials which are about $300 if you want to buy them, but you can use them for free when you log into the LA County Library from home. They have several other learning programs including foreign language programs. You can also check out electronic books online and download audio books. Hint: Download the Overdrive app on your phone or your computer, or both. It's free. You can easily download audio and electronic books using the app. All you need is your library card number and pin to login. You can add other electronic libraries to it as well. There you have it. One visit to the LA County library and you are totally hooked up for some serious savings and serious learning. read more

Kelly and the Staff are all friendly and helpful. They have a great Community Room for our events. Parking is free in the back lot. Easy to get to on public transportation as well. Be sure to check out the Friends of the Library bookstore for a great selection. There are plenty of tables with outlets in the main room, several quiet study rooms. Plenty of plugs at the tables and free Wi-Fi, of course. You can get buzzed into the bathrooms in the lobby which are clean and there's a water bottle filling fountain nearby. Great place to bring the kids. Fun programs are offered. Fabulous place to work/write. read more

I grew up in Culver City so I've been coming here all my life. I'm so sad to see that they changed their Saturday hours. I loved the fact that they opened early on , but oh well. I think remodeled building is very nice. The computer stations are all new and so are the panel thingies in the parking lot. I would just have to say that they should have repaved the parking lot since I visited 2 weeks ago and had a really bad fall near the dumpster. I'm a HUGE fan of libraries because it gives you a taste of the community, it offers AC and free Wi-Fi when you're traveling around. The only thing is, now that the homeless are camping out, there's a stench in every cloth chair near all the computers. Who wants to sit in someone else's piss and poop stained stinky seat? If you can afford to, Culver City Library, just switch all the computer chairs to one's that aren't cloth and then sanitize them on a nightly basis. It's not fair that those who pay taxes and pay for libraries aren't allowed to also enjoy them now without experiencing this gut wrenching stench. Otherwise, it's fine. I just wish the billions of dollars that were allotted to pay to help the Homeless actually went where it was supposed to, rather than bureaucrats who are wasting it and thus preventing numerous people who shouldn't be living on the streets, get off. I can't believe CA has had a 16% increase in homeless under Mayor Garcetti and wish Gavin Newsom would make this a priority to build homes or shelters that weren't brand new, but just remodels of existing buildings to hurry up the process. read more

This is a spacious facility with a number of accommodating offerings many other libraries do not have. The large computers and monitors are easy to read and use. The library has a large parking lot in the rear, full of many, wide spaces. The lot's circular structure facilitates an easy flow of traffic for driving through to drop off books then turn around. The book drops next to the driveway are also placed in easy-to-use locations. read more

This is a great local neighborhood library. Very spacious, fast WiFi. The magazine and newspaper section is one of my favorite spots. It is quite large, containing both recent and past issues from publications that cover a variety of topics that include gardening, cooking, business and science. Also, your first 10 pages from the printer are free, unlike other branches where every page costs 25 cents. Just be aware that Monday thru Friday at around 2pm students from the local elementary and middle school pour into the library so it can get a bit crowded and loud, but the librarians do an excellent job of keeping the peace and quiet. read more

The renovated building has re-opened!! Please note the hours. The 2-6 p.m. hours were for the temporary room; the library now opens at 10 a.m. 6 days a week. The lighting, carpeting, seating, computer stations, desks, and self-checkout are all new and nice, as are many things we cannot see, like the building mechanicals. You can check out a laptop to use in the library, and of course there is wifi. To the people who complain it is small, I say your imagination is small. You can order any book in the county system and have it sent here FOR FREE! You can also download the Overdrive app and order any ebook, including audiobooks, in the county system FOR FREE and have it appear on your iPad, iPod, whatever, immediately. FOR FREE! HELLO!!!! WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOME!!! Anyone who gives less than 5 stars does not appreciate the philosophy behind what makes America great. A homeless person could come here and find training, study guide materials, do a job search, etc. Anyone can come and get access to high level help at the reference desk for free. A child can come and get access to the whole world through the magic of reading. I have thought libraries were a miracle of sorts since I was a small child, and I still feel the same. Open your eyes, people. Libraries are great, even with torn carpeting and tacky seating, which the Culver City Julian Dixon Public Library no longer has. read more

The Julian Dixon Library is my regular library and I'm always reserving books online and dropping in to pick them up. Staff is always friendly and helpful, the building itself has an open and airy feel to it since the recent remodel, there looks to be lots of seating, and the landscaping is lovely. Though I tend to pick up my books and leave, I haven't noticed any loud talkers during my visits so that's another plus. The only thing that makes this not a 5+ star library is the lack of parking. If I plan on picking up or dropping off books, I make sure to get to the library about fifteen minutes before they open because visiting any later than that is basically a wasted effort and you'll be stuck in a line of idling cars waiting for a spot. Sometimes I will park further down on Overland and walk to the library but there's been lots of construction recently so that's not always an option. There's not a lot of parking spot turnover in the lot either since it seems like the spaces get taken early by folks looking for a safe place to park for the day, have AC in the building during warmer months, etc. If you can't get there early enough for a spot, I recommend taking the bus which has a stop right outside the library. read more

The only people who could rightly justify this library to be small would be the people who know that the books within these four walls have expanded their conception of the world. Pronouncing judgement on any building based on its four walls is unproductive because every place has more to it than the space it contains. I last visited this library two years ago and it certainly was in serious need of renovation. The library was lit by harsh yellowed fluorescent light, every chair was grimy and sagging, and the only patches of pristine carpet were found where the magazine shelves were removed in 2012. Everywhere else, the carpets were worn and dingy. In a couple places, chairs snagged on the threadbare carpets fixed with duct tape. The bookstore with its tired selection and the snaggle-toothed louvred blinds and the motion detection camera straight out of Orwell's 1984. The stale, windowless bathrooms that were only opened when you gave a nod to the front desk to "buzz" you in. This past week, the library quietly reopened and today, I went there to work. From the outside, not much has changed. They have a new sign in front and solar panels in the back, but that's about it. They did some landscaping, but it is quite subdued. The inside, while not "transformed," has been respectfully improved. The lighting, in particular, is much improved, much brighter and more naturally colored than the old library. There are no more dark corners anymore. The front desk area has been opened up into a light-filled atrium space, dramatically refreshing the entire library. The entire library is once again an open floor plan- the colorful archway and low wall separating the kid's area to the rest of the library is gone. Also removed is the behemouth of a reference desk (built for three) so redolent of the 1980s- of padded shoulders and the main bridge of the starship Enterprise. It has been replaced by a humble, elegant wooden desk, right in the center of the library, for the sole reference librarian. Frankly, I don't see as many books, CDs, and magazines as before. Not as many bookshelves. Perhaps 20-30% of the library's collection was culled. And now the bathrooms have reverted to an even older method of grade school internal control- a ruler with a key. On a positive note, the library now loans laptops for in-library use. And the carpets are new. 5 stars read more

This public library is the biggest one I've been to and I've been to quite a few of these Count of LA Public Libraries. It's very clean and big! The staff is friendly and organized. It's decently quiet at certain times of the day. Before schools get out, that's when it's quiet. Sometimes it gets loud when there are kids that come out from school and congregate in certain parts of the library. Other than that, it's quiet other times. I love how spacious it is with lots of desks/tables and outlets. Every time I come here, I don't have trouble finding a seat to study. My biggest complaint about this is the small parking lot they have. You can probably park on the side street if there's no parking! read more

No parking anywhere, but it's not a big deal as I always find a spot down the street. What I get annoyed by are the fucking kids. Screaming toddlers in the kids area. I can't get any work done here. It's all one big room, including the computer area. So the sound of screaming toddlers, old people laughing loudly at stuff on youtube, people talking in the study area and front desk, and other noises all add up to get pretty noisy. I'll try coming again in the morning and see if its better. read more

Pros: 1) Can take your food inside library (in City libraries, you cannot) 2) Can reserve books/DVDs from other libraries and they come reasonably quicker 3) Decent customer service (some are very good, but service depends on who you go to) 4) Lots of activities (story time, movie time, art time) in the library 5) Can borrow laptop for limited time 6) Study room is available Cons: 1) 'Kids section is louder' is understandable, but adults having loud conversations in the study area or talking in cellphone, happens quite often. Some people complain to the librarians and they try to solve the issue. So it's something to do with the people and not that much to do with the library. (Though in any city libraries, security will force the 'louder' person to step out, but county libraries cannot do that) 2) Parking is somewhat difficult unless you come early to the library. read more

Shock and awe. That's what I felt when I walked in to this teeny, tiny, dusty, dirty, smelly horrible place. WTF Culver City? I left Santa Monica PL for the "convenience" of THIS? Here's a suggested plan of action: 1) Clean. Seriously, I felt like I walked into a crack den. 2) Spray febreze ALL OVER THE PLACE (except the books, that would be bad, plus, books smell good which is why I don't just buy an iPad). 3) Hire people who look like they actually give a $%^. 4) Organize: you can't find a damn thing here. And I used to work at my college library so yes, I know how to find books. 5) Maybe also ask the city for some computers made AFTER 1995 for the poor individuals who were trying to look things up or do homework. This is really very telling that I felt like I was in my 8th grade computer room. 6, and most importantly) Get some people to give you books. For a library you have terrifyingly few of those. read more

Great neighborhood library! It's pretty spacious with plenty of tables for studying and it's clean. Staff is very friendly. I don't have a library card yet, but needed to use their computer and printer. You can just get a temporary card with a PIN number for computer use only. It's good for a month and printing up to 10 pages is free per day! I was in and out in about 10 mins., but I will definitely come back to do some studying. The parking lot is located behind the building. Parking may be a hassle as it get filled quickly. I went only an hour after the library had opened and it was already full. read more

Sometimes the best things in life are FREE. I used to be a big fan of public libraries growing up, but after living in S.F. for many years I thought libraries only served as daytime shelters for the homeless seeking refuge from the cold, damp weather. I went to the one in Culver City and I would see people from every socio-economic class as well as entire families at the library. Who needs Netflix when the library has an awesome selection of recent films, foreign films and documentaries on DVD? The best part is you can keep them for a week and they're FREE with a library card. Sony Studios has a sponsored teen-only homework section complete with computers, printers and other resources. They have an incredible selection of books too! I never in a million years thought I would find the 20+ lb. Andy Warhol Giant size book at a public library let alone available for check out, but voila!....there is was. read more

If I'd only ventured into this library earlier, when I actually lived in the area, I'd have been able to fully appreciate the space. I was recently there for a workshop held in the community room there, however, and it's better late than never to discover such a wonderful resource. I love public libraries and libraries in general. I love sitting in them, visiting them, wandering around and looking at their circulation materials, and I also like to see the various eccentricities that are built into the library for its patrons, such as eco-friendly architecture or art installations which tell a story about the space. With that said, the Julian Dixon Library in Culver City isn't much to look at. It's plain and smacks of an old-school practicality, both on the exterior and in the interior. But, it's a wonderful library. I walked in and was amazed at the light and space inside, which the flat old exterior belies. Given the small size of the parking lot (one of the drawbacks), you'd expect the library to be much smaller. I did. But, it feels cavernous for such a small city like Culver City. It's also one large space, with each open quadrant representing a different patron section. It's a little less than homey, particularly the children's section, but it seems to have a wide selection of materials and everything feels accessible. It's also very quiet and seems like an ideal space to study, given the natural light pouring in. The library is nearby many civic buildings and resources, like the Culver City Pool and the Adult School and the Ballona Creek Bike Path. It's around the corner from some nice restaurants too. *If you can't find parking in the lot, there's street parking available. Just make sure that you read all the signs before leaving your car, particularly on the residential side streets. Most of those areas have two signs posted, one of which states that you need a permit to park there at certain times. UPDATE: There's a sign when you're first entering the parking lot that designates two other nearby parking lots that are sanctioned for library parking. I think street parking might be closer, but just make sure you pay attention to the posted signs. read more
