The sculpture display changes in the garden frequently, so you can be sure to never get bored with what you see. Yes, I can still here the cars and the trams on the road, and yes, I am not alone in the garden. Yet who cares, when it's a little moment of peace in an otherwise busy day. And it's free!

On the other hand, what you're seeing there could range anywhere from amazing to awful to any place inbetween. The audience will often consist of friends and family of the exhibiting artists or performers. As long as you come here with this understanding, the Gasworks is a lovely venue. There's ample on-site parking, It's wheelchair accessible and the gallery space is nice and large. More than that, though, the decor is perfect for the type of show that you're likely to see. It's clean and comfortable, but not so fancy that you feel silly with a glass of fanta and a cheese cube on a toothpick.

I actually suspect that the reason for its exitence has something to do with there being a style of Australian art that developed in the region, though this museum doesn't really display any of it, namely because that tend to be elsewhere. This museum really works to promote more modern art, and as such most of the spaces are for exhibitions - there really isn't any art here that is own by the gallery. Mind you, they do have a pretty large outdoor area where there are quite a number of sculptures, and wandering through there is actually free. It is also a great place for a picnic, and while they also have a cafe on premises, it tends to get rather packed at times. Yeah, this place is cool, though one problem is that it can be tricky to get to if you happen to be relying on public transport.

What started off as a retreat for influential and up and coming Australian artists has become a beautiful and unique gallery and space. Walking around the buildings and through the gardens it isn't hard to imagine great artists like Sydney Nolan, or Albert Tucker practicing their work along with the owners and patrons Sunday and John Reid. The Heide Gallery of Modern Art is modest. Its small Australian collection is interesting and well presented. White walls and spacious rooms contribute to a very modern atmosphere, matched by the evocative and sometimes confrontational pieces of work. What I like about Heide is that it's a collective experience. You can't just go and see the gallery without walking around the garden. You can't just see the garden without visiting the old farmhouse. You can't just visit the old farmhouse without walking through the gallery and looking at the Reid's legacy. Take the time to walk around Heide and experience the natural beauty and modern art. You won't regret it.

There are plenty of cosy venues along the route to duck into for a warming drink or a cold beer if you're feeling the chill in the air. The scale and 'wow factor' aren't as massive as the Christmas and White Night projections, but the crowds aren't as big either. This event is more suited to conversation and casual strolling at your own pace. With the bright lights and friends & families roaming the street, it almost feels like Christmas... in July!

I highly recommend becoming a viewer next year. Whole buildings are turned into projection screens that have static and moving light displays. Also used are smaller projections within store windows and even projections on to the footpath and trees. No space is spared and the imagination of the artist is limitless. I love the concept of light as art and this festival has chosen wisely and collaborated with some fantastic artists. It is a fun and innovative festival that is free for the general public to view. Normally a five-minute walk form Nicholson St to Smith St - this exhibition takes about an hour to take in and appreciate. A small amount of time that will leave a large impression.

A quaint little shop with a broad take on its theme, Alice & Co is a self-proclaimed "purveyor of…read morelanguage and other wonders". Locally themed and published books, prints of classical illustrations, postcards, notebooks and other literary themed art are all displayed on dark wood tables and bookshelves. There's a whole shelf of different Alice in Wonderland illustrations on postcards in pigeon holes for $2.50 each, but not everything in the shop is directly associated with Lewis Carrol novel. Small prints of fairy tale stills and tarot deck illustrations go for between $15 and $30 each, it's a good place to stock up on things for your walls that aren't just band posters stripped from poles around Melbourne. Alice & Co also plays host to exhibits from illustrators, readings and book launches, as well as classes in humanities and languages. It's also been known to host puppet theatre. The proprietor is friendly and obliging, and lovers of literature will enjoy the general feel of the place.

The window display right now is quite epic. There's variety of art all themed from Alice in Wonderland (I guess they wanted the window art to match the name of the gallery). The last time i managed to swing past Alice & Co was when they had an exhibition from a much admired photographer Ari Fainchtein. The small space is quaint and cosy but after a while in Alice & Co, it was time to move on, a coffee just around the corner finished off the visual feast. Alice & Co host a range of Book Launches / Openings, Exhibitions and even runs some classes for languages and social sciences.
