The Association (comprised of all volunteers) built an addition this year and now houses the 1855 Button Tub, a 4th of July parade favorite for years. There are also two beautiful antique engines, also staples of the 4th of July parade. It's very clear that these men and women care deeply about their community. They have done a great job here and have big plans for future exhibits and displays. Stop in and check it out and while you're there pick up an Edgartown Fire t-shirt for the firefighter in your life. They have added a few new designs this year and have kid's and women's T's this year, $15 and proceeds go right back into the museum! The group also hosts an annual pancake breakfast the last weekend in August. The volunteers show off their skills, rappelling off the ladder truck, cutting up cars with the jaws of life, and more. There are fun take home bags and great activities for the kids (Sparky the fire dog usually makes an appearance). It's a great event family event that gets better every year!

The lighthouse protects ships in Vineyard Sound, the tidal strait that separates the southwestern coast of Cape Cod from the northern shores of Martha's Vineyard. From here, you can watch the many ferries making their way from Woods Hole to the islands. The light station was established in 1828, with the tower protruding above the keeper's house, and was replaced in 1876 by the current 42 foot tall iron tower. The light station includes four buildings: the tower, the keeper's house, a radio beacon house, and a small oil house. The keeper's house is open for tours. The oldest of…read morethe old King Philip's War was a nasty affair with atrocities and lots of horrible things occurring on both the Native American and English sides. Towns were burned and people murdered. No quarter was asked and none was given. One particularly brutal incident was called Nine Men's Misery. It started on March 20, 1676, when Capt Piece of the colonists let a group of troops after what was left of the Narragansett Tribe. The troops got a bit too over confident and walked right into an ambush and were slaughtered by the Narragansetts. Virtually all of the troops were killed but nine managed to survive the battle and were captured, tortured and then killed. Not exactly unexpected considering what the English were doing to the Narragansetts. Most of their villages were burned and the women and children executed . When other English troops found the bodies of the dead captives. they immediately buried the bodies and put up a monument site of rocks over the graves so the memory of the incident would never be forgotten. The pile of rocks have been tended to ever since and is now considered the oldest veterans memorial in the country. It's not exactly an exciting or aesthetically stunning memorial but it an extremely spooky and fascinating place to hike out and actually find. The area has lots of cool hiking trails besides the one leading to the memorial but the bugs are incredibly bad in these woods. Lovely stone walls and beautiful trees, this would probably be a great place for a winter or fall hike. A thoughtful place to reflect and remember what it was like back then during these horrible wars. Right and wrong, good and evil are just words. Pain, death and suffering was the reality.

And the fish are of varying sizes in the different tanks. The tanks closest to the visitor parking lot hold the largest fish - saw lots of 18"+ fish (those are the big rainbow trout in my video). You can buy a handful of fish food for 25 cents. The dispenser is like an old fashioned bubble gum machine. Bring quarters and bring a cup or napkin to dispense the food into - a quarters worth barely fits in my hand. I'm immature , so I easily go through $1 worth of food. Inevitably there is a family there who doesn't have quarters (no change maker on site), so I usually end up buying food for some kids as well. Still, under $2 for an hour of pure excitement. The best is when you actually feed the fish - it's a total feeding frenzy with fish jumping out of the water. It's really cool.

The explosion, accelerated by COVID, had not only driven up real estate prices (which is not my issue as I can't afford 2m for a 2 bedroom, $1,200/sq ft), but a whole new group of people have ventured to the island. Building is out of control - every open lot is being built on - Sandpiper has added 500 new places, which means 1,000+ cars - on a tiny island. Yes - it's "supposed" to be affordable housing for the island workers (it's not) - it simply has congested that side of the island beyond repair. Some folks got a nice pay day to approve such a mess. June used to be relatively calm - but the craziness now starts in May and continues through mid-September. July/August are unbearable - you will sit at the 5-way stop sign by the HS for 20 minutes and will certainly hear 10 horns, an FU, and see a few fingers as cars cut without any courtesy. Welcome to Manhattan. Forget getting into restaurants - those in the know with ties to the managers get reservations. Otherwise, enjoy jetties, Millie's and the Muse and the Fairgrounds. Greed was always a part of the island (back to its whaling days). But I felt that it tried to present as a laid back Vineyard, without the excesses of the Hamptons, etc. it has now jumped the shark - unabashed about monetizing the Nantucket story - while destroying the declining authenticity of old Nantucket. Me and my family were fortunate to see a little of that gem. Sadly - it's gone. The island is now in the same hands/path as the Hamptons - superficial, money driven, soul less crowd flocking to be seen. So long Nantucket - we will remember you and miss you.
