I didn't expect much so I was even more surprised at the quality of the course and the country club feel. It's a bit more manicured and open than I thought it would be given the location in rural western MA. The 11th is very picturesque, with a winding brook framing the right side and then cutting across in front of the green. The 15th was also very pretty but a good bit more challenging. The closing 18th is a bit of an odd hole where I had to fight through geese and their legions of droppings but somehow fisted a wedge onto the green and made birdie (it was the only hole where the fairway wasn't in good condition). Looking at satellite images, I guess the course had some serious burnout issues at some point but everything looks good now and was quite lush and consistent when I played.

The course is beautiful, with a manageable front and long back 9 (6500 yrs) from the middle tees. The course is open and even high handicap golfers will not lose many balls; there are really only a few spots on the course that are truly out of bounds. The staff is typically very friendly, Jeremy who manages the bag room is particularly nice. The pros are all great too. The whole place is well maintained, as they do host PGA (junior/womens) events from time to time. The greens play very fast towards the end of summer, and some of them slope in ways that will really frustrate anyone. Price-wise, the place is on the upper end if you have no college affiliation (about 140 or so) but is exceptionally cheap for students (35 dollars) so definitely a place to visit if you are in the area and still in school. The course truly cannot be recommended enough, and it offers some exceptional views of both the Williams College campus and the surrounding areas.

So I went to their website and booked a tee time for 5:30PM, a cart, 9 holes, starting on the back nine. When I arrived earlier to check in and buy a bucket of balls I found no one in the pro shop. I waited for 5 minutes before heading to the restaurant and asked if they knew if anyone was in the pro shop right now. They pointed out a young man sorting carts so I went back to take a look in the pro shop, still no one there so I asked the young man if he knew where someone was. He said he wasn't working there today but could check me in. So we walk in and I get told he'd have to ask the guy working there today if they could let carts out this late (mind you there were multiple tee times for carts surrounding the one I booked). The guy comes in the young man asks and he says "no way not happening" I explain I booked online specifically for a cart and he tells me "they're just rolling them back". Ok that's fine. The young man asked if I still wanted to walk to which I replied not really and he told me he apologized. Had no apology from the guy or explanation as to why the website still had multiple tee times with carts after OR why I waited around and tried to find someone. Just very blunt and arrogant. No reason for it in my opinion. Everyone else was kind though.

Some courses look amazing on websites, but then disappoint in real life. This one looks incredible…read moreon the website... then lives up to it in real life, and then some. I make sure to go out at least once a year to play 36 holes. So I have probably played over 200 courses in my lifetime, and this is my favorite of them all. A true player's course, full of subtleties that can only be appreciated by good golfers. Every single hole is unique, there's not one single throwaway hole out of the 18. Every par 3 is an absolute gem, and it has 4 of the most interesting par 5's you've ever seen. This is not meant to shortchange the par 4's, which are also all very different and challenging. As beautiful as this course is, the greens are where the men are separated from the boys at the Crump. And if you're not in the correct section of the green with your approach, good luck 2-putting. It's as true a test of golfing ability as you'll find in New England. If you can break 80 here, you can probably shoot even par anywhere else. And for such a spectacular course, the people that work there are incredibly friendly and low-key. I've been to countless courses in New England (e.g. Wachusett and Shaker Hills) that can't hold a candle to Crump, where the uppity staff acts as if they're running Augusta. You get none of that arrogance here. The staff is as charming as the course. There is really only one thing I would add to improve the experience. GPS carts. There are several partially blind shots where it would really help out, especially regarding approach shots to elevated greens. The greens all have their own unique shape and if you don't know them, it's near impossible to know where to put the ball on the approach. So if you want to see a course you'll never forget, take the drive out to Bernardston and check it out. If you don't instantly fall in love with this course (especially in the fall where the foliage is simply phenomenal), you should find another sport. Lastly, a few words of warning... 1. Don't try to walk this course in the summer heat. I did it once, but will never do it again. Take a cart. 2. This course is geared towards very good golfers. I'd say if you're above a 15 handicap, do not torture yourself trying to play this course.

Strange I never knew this course existed until a friend invited me to play both North and South courses on one day. Overall it was fun. I played the South course much better than the slightly more difficult North. I'll blame it on being tired. It was a long day made needlessly longer. Both courses are in pretty good shape. The greens had quite a bit of undulation to them, but they ran true. Fairways were also in decent shape. It was a nice day of golf, but made long by poor course scheduling management. We prebooked our 3 tee slots, there were 12 of us. The morning round went off without a hitch. We were scheduled to go off the second round on the North course between 1 and 1:30, about an hour or so after the 1st round. When we completed the morning South course round, the pro informed us there would be a little delay as they had a scramble tournament in progress on the North and they were running slow. Nearly 2 hours later, and little communication, we were still waiting. I'm sure they run many scramble tournaments do it amazes me that thry misjudged completion so badly. We finally did tee off and got the round in as dusk was approaching. I then had an hour and a half ride home to a pissed off wife and disappointed grandson

Its buried in the woods in my home town of South Hadley, MA. The course is private, so you'll need to know a member to get on. Its fairly expensive even if you do. If you end up playing here, though, you'll be treated to one of the best 18 holes you can play in Massachusetts. This course is very well maintained, and very challenging. There are almost no holes that you can survive with an innacurate tee shot. The course itself is very long, and has difficult shots around its very protected greens. The course was designed by Donald Ross, and you can see some of his trademark elements still in the design. If you' have enough money to become a member here, I would seriously consider it.

Should've have been comped an extra game/hour for all the time we spent running back and forth from the desk and moving out stuff to other lanes! Very mad!
