They're either pink for practice or yellow for games. And they aren't made of rubber, they are plastic polymer whose chief characteristic is that it doesn't bounce very high. If you drop it from over your head, it will barely bounce to knee level. Learning (and remembering that fact about low bounces) is just one of the many things you'll need to master if you want to take up the sport. Pickleball was launched in the mid-1960s and is played on a smallish court with a modified tennis net, using a paddle and those perforated polymer balls. I'd best describe the game as the love child of tennis, ping pong and badminton. When you hit the ball, it sounds more like a thud than a ping! Similar to tennis, your goal is to hit the ball over the net and into your opponent's side while adhering to a myriad of rules about serving and counting bounces and staying away from a zone in front of the net that reminded me of the goalie's cease in hockey. Dill Dinkers has 20 locations across ten states. There is just one Connecticut location. Yesterday, we took our very first pickleball lesson at Dill Dinkers in Simsbury, in a space previously occupied by Borders Books. We joined a beginner's class with about 20 rookies and interacted with three exceptional and very patient coaches who gave us lesson time, practice drills and embryonic game play with instant feedback on performance and the rules (which I consistently violated). For the third year in a row, Pickleball is the country's fastest growing sport, and their courts are taking over empty shopping mall space across the country. After one lesson, I am looking forward to charting my "progress" over the next three weeks. I'm not very optimistic about that!

The courts have a great aesthetic and have really good quality surfaces. My favorite part is how much space there is between the baselines and the fences. Not once did I have to worry about hitting the barriers, and that allowed me to play much more freely. We encountered a technical difficulty during a tournament that caused us to play an opponent out of order, slightly messing things up which was a little frustrating in the moment. But the tournament organizer did a great job resolving it, and went above and beyond to offer some compensation in the form of free court time and some waived fees which is a huge testament to their customer service. I really appreciated that gesture. Will definitely be back here!

The location is beautiful with 5 regular courts and 1 championship court. Cabanas at each court for your stuff and a lounge with locker rooms to change while you wait. A bar with lounge also. The staff has been amazing. Brian checked us in, we told him we were very new to the sport and he was extremely helpful. So much so, he gave us a lesson and played with us. We have been back 4 times since and may join a league.

At dinner time we walked probably a hundred yards from the pool and had a meal in their picnic grove near the Connecticut River. Then went for an evening swim between 6-8 pm before going home. At that time the membership was about $150 per year for the family. My father would bring the car home at lunchtime so my mother could take my brother and me to their pool, sometimes I brought one of my best friends.If it has been maintained as well as the pictures show, it is well worth visiting to learn more about their current membership levels. Taking the course with Maura spared me from likely embarrassment. She explained the rules clearly and demonstrated serving techniques. She's very patient. She told me not to rush my serve. The class had just enough time to play a short game. The facilities are nice. I borrowed a pickleball racket for free. I'll need more practice. There are sessions where beginners can play. If you like being outdoors, this is the perfect spot to enjoy it. There are two parking lots. I parked by the playground and splash pad. There was a porta potty there. The playground had swings, a sandbox, and a playscape. There is a large pond and a short boardwalk that goes through a nature preserve. There is a short paved trail in the middle of the park. There were many picnic tables and benches throughout. I'm betting this is a great spot to go sledding during the winter since there are many hills there. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves today. We walked the park's paths that meander through its 28 acres and connect so many great entertainment and athletic options. We saw an amphitheater, six clay tennis courts, a lighted little league field, a soccer field, a Children's Forest, a huge playground, pickleball courts, a splash pad, a nice pond, hiking trails, pretty scenery, and a long boardwalk over wetlands. That's a ton of things for your enjoyment. I really didn't expect this park to be as awesome as it was, but I was thrilled to have underestimated it.

They must have fixed the "LOUD BELL" because I have never heard anything comparing to what was mentioned, and they must have gotten new lights as well because the courts are anything but dark, I have never heard anyone complain about it being too dark. The employees are very nice and make you feel welcome. I participated in a 4 week, tuesday and thursday summer program for juniors, it was for all skill levels and they focused on everyone's strong and weak points individually. I have normal eyesight, and these courts really screwed up my depth perception and overall ability to judge where the ball was. Lots of other folks I talked to agreed that these courts had a reputation for being too dark. The darkness isn't the worst aspect of the Ludlow Tennis Club though. That honor belongs to the LOUD BELL that rings periodically. I guess it's supposed to signal the turn of the hour (or half hour) or something, but it's horrifically loud, startling, and not the kind of thing you'd ever expect to hear at a club that's dedicated entirely to tennis. It's awful. Every single court has to call a let when the stupid bell goes off.

She agreed Then the coach came with two cheap racquets asked to play with those as if we never played. I play at home in Texas with Joola rackets for 3 yrs. It performs the same. The coach started telling us the surface will change if we play more than 15 min with those. What a SNOB !!? No wonder there were no players whole morning.
