Location is just north of the clay courts on the grassy hill with some trees for cover and shade on the hill. Most people bring blankets because chairs are really only stable near the sidewalk or at the parking area at the top of the hill. Getting here is tricky if your map doesn't give good walking directions: GPS: 40.79786° N, 73.97636° W Arriving on foot- enter at 100th St, walk down and around a few curvy paths to find the bridge and underpass for the highway and then walk to the water and south from there to the courts. It's also possible to arrive by car in a small parking lot- but parking is limited and shared with tennis players so you'd want to arrive very early. The sound is projected into the hill; so it doesn't really travel too far beyond the picnic area and sometimes the sound team needs a little extra help, but the musicians are passionate and the scenery is lovely, so enjoy the free summer sounds and views!

Luckily the people who the court was given to, were cool with compromising and playing doubles but it was a frustrating situation nonetheless. Even they said this place frequently gives them a hard time. It was my first time playing here and when I asked the staff what the check in process was like, they were rude and dismissive. Not that it matters, but I didn't know these were clay courts. The online reservation system is outdated and gives you the bare minimum level of information. The only silver lining of playing here is that it's a reasonable $15 an hour to play if you have the NYC tennis permit. The locker rooms and bathrooms are pretty dirty so I'm not even sure what those fees are going towards

One of those challenges can be how to continue your workout routine (especially as a tennis player). While I don't have specific recommendations for how to alleviate this situation in all cities, I can provide some assistance when it comes to visiting Manhattan in New York City. While searching for some "travel tennis" my record has been mixed. For example, on another trip earlier this year I went 0-fer (despite calling and emailing at least half a dozen Clubs). Well no such drama on this trip. My first (and only) call was to the Manhattan Plaza Racquet Club. Their staff was friendly on the phone (and in person) and they did an outstanding job of arranging a Singles match for me (at my ability level) with a member who was also warm and welcoming. Their 5 indoor courts are well maintained and offer year-round opportunities to play. Quite frankly, when considering all of the times that I've attempted to play "travel tennis", I've never encountered a friendlier, more welcoming, or more helpful staff. I merely posed the innocuous question of, "Are there any opportunities to play at your Club while traveling, even though I'm not a member?" I was then so inundated with the options provided to me that I literally needed to take written notes. Sadly, if someone had posed the same question to my tennis club in San Diego the would have been slammed so quickly in their face that it would have immediately broken their ! The costs associated with your choice of play here are not insignificant, but a traditional membership is not required. Definitely one of the better set of tennis courts in the City…read more I went to Columbia and never played here. It was only after graduating that I discovered this place and started to play here a lot. The courts are better than most courts, for example, at Astoria or Fort Greene. Everyone knows everyone (there are a lot of regulars like at other NY courts) and I've found everyone to be approachable and nice. There's an active association that holds tournaments and clinics. Like other NY parks, the tennis courts cannot be reserved in advance and can only be booked for 1 hour each time. Repeats are only allowed if there is availability. During the summer weekends, it's impossible to repeat unless you get there at 7 in the morning or 7 at night. During the summer weeks, it usually gets crowded as well. You have the best chances of getting a court from 7-8pm. Connections are key. If you know the right people, you can play longer during peak times... such is life in our beautiful city. Courts 1-2 are the show courts but I also like the courts in the back where there's less traffic of people coming on/off courts.

One note - all members and guests were required to wear suit & tie. They have spare ties if you didn't have one with you. If you had a bag, there was a coat and bag check near the front. Member names I think on the wall behind the concierge, and you had a room at the front if you insisted on talking on a phone.

This is easily going to be one of my daughter's favorite playgrounds in the city. Although we need a train ride to get here, this space is well worth it. Structures are innovative and there's plenty to climb for a child in search of adventures. There's even a tunnel they can crawl up and down on they're own! There's a section for little ones at the northern end and water sprinklers as soon as you enter to the right. The jungle made of ropes and unstable platforms is unique, and so is the pretend train car that can be moved from outside. This place is nothing short of awesome! We visited on a Sunday afternoon toward the end of summer and the place wasn't even too crowded. It's kept clean and we felt safe. Restrooms are available and plenty of restaurants dots the neighborhood. Go and have a blast with your kids!
