The overgrown tree
Ed U.

** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** These are indeed challenging times, and I'm not even referring to the pandemic itself but how life throws you lemons unexpectedly. Well, I'm not the self-sufficient, HGTV-obsessed type that can make lemonade out of those lemons. That's why I appreciate a responsive and conscientious business owner like Jeremy who handled two separate tree trimming situations for me. The first was triggered by a neighbor who complained my backyard tree was encroaching on her property. I just wasn't aware since I don't live there, and indeed it was overgrown and needed attention. I found Jeremy when I went searching for a tree service on Yelp. He was the first to respond to the suggested inquiries, and we were able to meet within a couple of days in order to assess the job and give me a quote. Within a couple of weeks, accompanied by his crew, he took care of the trimming by messaging me helpful photo updates for feedback and guidance and hauling away the debris all within an afternoon. Just a few weeks later, the turbulent rainstorms knocked down the fencing around my place, and I needed a lot of trees to be cut back and cleared away. Once again, for a reasonable price, he managed this job by himself in a single afternoon. I found out later he also handles fence replacements and landscaping, and I would've asked him for an estimate had I not found someone else for that part of the job. Jeremy never asked me to review him here, but I wanted to let others know I have been a very satisfied customer of his services. RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? 4 stars for quality work. 0 stars for ethical business…read morepractices I hired Melvin and George from La Económica Landscaping after receiving a written estimate from their coordinator, Cindy, for work that included: * Garden clean-up & hauling - $1,375 * Mulch + small brick installation (combined) - $650 Total: $2,025 And a recurring monthly maintenance fee at $200 The crew did a nice job with the clean-up. Their labor and craftsmanship were good. However, the way this business operates is extremely concerning. Even though the scope was clearly defined both verbally and in writing, the owner later tried to change the terms of the estimate, claiming parts of the agreed-upon work were "mistakenly included." Throughout the process, there were multiple "gotcha" moments, surprise clarifications, shifting explanations, and attempts to downplay what was originally promised. Despite the written estimate explicitly listing a "mulch + small brick installation (combined)", the brick installation was never completed. When I followed up, they claimed it had been a "mistake" in the estimate and refused to honor that part of the agreement. Communication became defensive, taunting, and unprofessional, and rather than resolve the situation collaboratively, the owner sent a $300 refund before we had even reached an agreement, then canceled my ongoing maintenance service altogether. It's disappointing, because the work quality itself was solid. But their business ethics and communication practices are sketchy. They seem more focused on short-term profit than building long-term relationships or standing by their written commitments. They told me the brick feature would enhance the look of my garden. I guess I'll never find out. If you decide to hire them, make sure every detail is documented and signed. Otherwise, expect last-minute changes and confusion about what you actually paid for.

NAB Construction

We had a great experience NAB Construction! Our pickleball court had broken concrete on one end,…read moreand was too short on the other. NAB removed all the bad concrete and replaced it with pavers, and on the other side of the court, they added 5 feet of concrete where we had lawn, as well as adding to our existing retaining wall. After the pavers were installed, I noticed something not to my preference with the paver layout. I contacted Nick, our site manager from NAB, and he was very responsive, and arranged for Nate (the company president) to come out right away and discuss the matter, which was resolved that same day to my complete satisfaction. Nick also was happy to arrange for a few other small tasks related to bricks and concrete on our property to be taken care of, and they were - at no added cost. NAB construction was not the lowest bid we got for this work, but I have learned the hard way that going with the lowest price is not always a great idea, and I am glad I went with NAB for this project. I'm very satisfied with the results of this project, and would not hesitate to recommend NAB construction to others.

We wanted a walkway installed so we went back but this time we dealt with someone by the name of Nick Vard. He was very unprofessional and used the terms "outside the scope of work" and asked us to make a "commitment" several times. I went to Brickyard on a Saturday at 8AM per the direction of Nick but when I called him about our selection he never called me back. He blamed us and said they lost money on the job because it took longer than expected. He tried to convince me to use a brick I did not like. And the biggest disappointment was the drainage that they left unfinished. We spent almost $10k but we feel like the job is incomplete. Wish we could recommend them but if they continue working with Nick Vard you should stay away.
