My persimmon tree is incredible! Thanks to edible landscaping I have a very impressive Yates American Persimmon tree growing in my backyard. Planted in 2017 as a "whip" with bare roots, it is now about 12-14 feet tall. It is growing vigorously and most years produces about 100-150 edible persimmons and has since about 2021. I will have to come back and post a picture. read more

I've been regularly visiting Edible Landscaping for about five years, and I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't written a review for them yet. I absolutely love to garden, and am a big fan of plants that serve multiple purposes --looking nice, and providing something else useful, especially fruit and such. Edible landscaping is located in Virginia wine country, and combining a visit here with a visit to some of the local wineries is a wonderful way to spend a day. Veritas, Pippin Hill, and all the other big ones are within 15-30 minutes away, but make it a good visit and check out some of the really nearby, smaller wineries. But, I digress. Edible Landscaping offers a wide variety of plants, trees, and shrubs, all of which are, would you believe it? Edible. There's your traditional stuff like apple trees, pear trees, herbs, and what not (seasonally varying), but you can also find really cool, unusual stuff: elderberry, nanking cherries, pawpaws, and more, as well as interesting varieties of the traditional plants. Where they really bloom (see what I did there), though, is with knowledge, and especially local knowledge. If you're from the region, they can tell you what will and won't grow in your backyard. They're great at making sure you know stuff like, hey, that variety of elderberry needs a pollinator, and the one you've got won't work, so get this one instead. They've also got a great system that tracks your purchases, so when (like a dummy) you say, "I bought this tree last year, I don't remember what it is," they can tell you. I've... overheard... other people having that conversation, it's never been me, I swear. Their customer service is really top notch, and that's what sets them apart from other places. Beyond that, their plants are really good quality. I've never had anything from them fail to thrive, with the exception of stuff they told me not to buy. The name attracted my attention. Edible landscaping...hmmm... edible for whom? or what? I was so intrigued, I turned the car around and went back a few miles just so I could appease my curiosity. As a general statement, I'm glad their website had directions, because the map wasn't very clear, and the GPS told me I had arrived when I reached the bottom of a hill in front of someone else's home. I wonder how often that unfortunate family has to deal with other lost sojourners. In any case, I kept driving up the hill. That was the right decision, luckily, since there was no room to turnaround on that road. Edible Landscaping is about a quarter of a mile up a gravel driveway to the top of the hill. Here is where this business lives up to its name. As I first got out of the car, I saw the greenhouses and many tall plants. I guess it is Edible Landscaping since the first live body I saw was a family of ducks noshing on the grass (or whatever it was). As I walked around, I saw fruit trees, lots and lots of fruit trees, some with fruit, some still flowering, some of the kind I've never seen before in person. I had no idea what a persimmon or kumquat tree looked like outside a book before this visit. There were also chokecherry, grape, plum, and apple trees that were in great shape. Of course if you're not looking for a fruit tree, there were also some herbs, shrubs, and general landscaping and garden plants available. All I know is that if I had the yard and time, I'd be ordering from this place a lot. read more

UPDATE 2019 July 10 Still have not heard anything from this Nursery about the Persimmon tree that died back to the Rootstock. I since have read several bad reviews on these dishonest people and now this will move into the next phase of retribution for those that lack integrity. I assure you they will think long and hard before they ever deal with customers this way when I have finished my work!!! DO NOT USE THIS NURSERY!!! l purchased 3 Persimmon trees from them last year, 2018. A Weber, a Ruby and a Meader. The Weber and Meader looked best when they arrived but I know that the 1st year that is usually how they grow. The biggest of the trees was the Weber and it looked the worst by fall. The Weber died and it was difficult to get some assistance. Actually the rootstock below the graft is alive but above is dead. It's been 3 days ago now I sent a email and they still haven't replied. I will be making a YouTube video narrating this process. I was a 1st time customer and am disappointed in the outcome so far. read more

Not happy with them. Five years ago, I bought a Gerardi dwarf 4-pack plant deal they were selling. I grew the plants out and sold 3 of those plants to other people, I kept one for myself. After 3 years of no fruits from my tree, I sent pictures of the tree back to edible landscaping for an ID. They said I had a male plant. This means that the plants I sold to other people were also males. That really made me feel bad, knowing what those people got was not what they expected to get. Edible landscaping then sent me a new Gerardi dwarf mulberry tree a little over a year ago. However, that tree grew to over 9 feet in one year! That led me to believe that this tree was also not a Gerardi dwarf since it grew like a rocket ship headed to the moon! It has long stem nodes, which is unlike any Gerardi dwarf I have ever seen on videos online. I am positive that this new tree is not Gerardi dwarf. Several people in my Facebook mulberry growing group have told me it is not a Gerardi dwarf mulberry despite edible Landscaping insisting that it is. read more

We live in northern Virginia, but I was very excited to make this historic trip down to Edible Landscaping. (Edible Landscaping is somewhat famous among East Coast fruit growers.) So 2.5 hours later, we drove up the steep and curved unpaved road to Edible Landscaping. It was very rustic - and it took us almost 5 minutes to find someone who worked there (on a Sunday afternoon). But as we walked up the paths, we saw fruit trees growing everywhere - pomegranates, figs, and even some fruit I couldn't name. I picked up my order - calamondin orange, Myers lemon, Salavatsky pomegranate, asparagus, Queen Anne raspberry, agave, and rhubarb. My feelings were mixed - I didn't even buy the Queen Anne raspberry and rhubarb because there was only 1 leaf on each plant. I can't blame them too much though, because when I called, they said those plants might not be ready for me, since they were the runts of the litter and the better ones had sold out since it's autumn now. As for the orange, asparagus, and lemon, they were completely root-bound - I spent a good 5 minutes trying to get them out of the pot. I blame this on the fact that they were sourced from another nursery. But the pomegranate and the agave were perfect - very healthy and not root bound. This leads me to the conclusion that I'll probably only buy from Edible Landscaping in the future if I know that the plants are rooted/grafted at Edible Landscaping (instead of Edible Landscaping serving as the middleman). This is why Edible Landscaping is so popular - because it grafts/roots so many unusual cultivars and sells them for great prices - so I'll stick to what they're best at. UPDATE (7/2015): I went back to Edible Landscaping this time and had a completely different experience. George spent an hour on the phone with me answering my questions about different cultivars, and then when I drove down, he spent an hour patiently picking the best plants out with me and giving me advice on planting and growing each plant. (Last time, I preordered my order, so it was sitting by the front door when I arrived.) This time, 14 of my 15 plants were in great condition (with 1 exception which turned out to have an insect infestation - and I was reimbursed with no trouble). read more

This place is true paradise! Is this what Eden looked like? There are probably a dozen persimmon varieties, nearly just as many fig varieties, including very rare ones like my prized new green ischia fig and the delicious favorite around the chez Kristen garden right now, the Petite Negri. I could not believe my eyes! There were so many rare varieties of persimmons, citrus, and figs. There were even maybe five varieties of pomegrantes. The best thing of all is that they are available year long! You heard me, year long! Not only do you not need to cross your fingers and order from an online company, but you can buy locally and get the plant whenever you want! Whenever you WANT! Edible Landscaping is even more awesome because they choose their varieties based on taste and other factors important to use gardeners, such as size:productivity ratio. I'm not even done yet, people! What's more, they are actually growing just about everything they sell in-ground, on the premises. You can walk out and see the plants full grown and maybe even taste the fruit, if you're there in season. Am I done yet? NOPE! They have even tropical exotics like dragon fruit and even rare indigenous and all-but-forgotten plants, such as American persimmons and paw paws. Do you like berries? You'll never find so many different types and varieties of a given berry in one place! Best of all, you can drive up to get it! No shipping! The place is a wonderland for gardening enthusiasts. The owners are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and enthusiastic about what they do. My one and only complaint is that the prices aren't displayed prominently and, while you can use the catalog for a seriously detailed plant characteristics and plant care description, the catalog prices are no always the same as the actual purchase price. I like to plan my garden budget damage, so that was frustrating for me. That docks 1/2 a star. Although some things were higher and some were lower, my overall bill was less than expected since I went during the Persimmon Festival, a fabulous event for any gardener of edibles. There is no better drive than the one to Edible Landscaping because it's gorgeous, and it's right at the Rockfish Gap Shenandoah entrance. Be very careful going up the hill to the nursery, however. It's super narrow and slightly scary because it is two-way with room for only one car, realistically. Just the same, the place is fabulous! I bought a persimmon last fall and it appeared to be dead this spring. Last fall I also bought some other trees like fig and pawpaw from other vendors and those are doing fine. I call EL for advice what to do but they told to contact them via e-mail for support. They never responded. Thus I will never buy from them their overpriced seedlings, considering you can get native bare root seedlings for just $2 in some places, and will have much better odds. read more

Post office took forever to deliver one order and Edible Landscaping was very accommodating to be sure that I had really healthy plants. I attempted to order two 7 gallon trees and several bushes. After my order had already been taken as a delivery I was contacted to tell me delivery was no longer possible. I would have to pick them up. After working through the logistics I tried to continue with the order. Two days before I was scheduled to pick up my order I contacted them about where to go and ask if everything was ready. Only then did they mention they had sold part of my order, that I had already paid for, to somebody else and I would have to accept smaller sizes. They made no effort towards transparency, willing to make me drive an hour for the surprise. I ended up cancelling my order due to the horrid customer service and constant bait and switch. read more

I purchased two Paw Paw grafted plants from this nursery spring 2019. at the same time I ordered another pair of Paw Paws from another nursery. Neither of the plants from Edible Landscaping budded, the two from the other nursery did fine. I want to add that i grew up on a farm and I am not a novice grower. I contacted Edible Landscaping at the end from June, 2019, no one answered their telephone so i left a voice mail message. Edible Landscaping (Micheal) replied on 07/03/19 "Out of both varieties, would you consider another type? Michael" I answered "I'm hesitant to plant this this late in the season, Can I reserve two for next spring?" I never heard back from Michael Last month I wrote back "I'm assuming that varieties offered for sale online are available, unless Edible Landscaping has them listed as being "Sorry, we are currently out of this item, please check back!". If this is the case may I get as replacements: Wabash (R) Pawpaw - Asimina triloba and Overleese Pawpaw - Asimina triloba Both are listed as available and for sale There seems to be a misunderstanding-confusion with these e-mails I did see your email of 7/3. I responded that I would rather take delivery in 2020 as 7/3 seemed a bit late in the season to put something in the ground. That is the email that I never got a reply to. please respond soon. If these varieties are not available please send a list or web address of what my choices are. Truly impressed. After having purchased several pawpaw trees from another online vendor, i was feeling less than confident that i would receive anything other than a dry stick in the mail. this time however was different. i needed a girlfriend for my other tree that i got locally and the one that arrived from Edible Landscape was tall healthy and beautiful. Had to substitute my Mango Pawpaw for different one. i paid for it, therefore you had it on hand, or you just steal peoples money BECAUSE YOU DON'T CARE. 3. The jujube tree size I bought they did not send. They sent one in 1/2 the size container and said they were keeping the difference in price and I could buy something else. They finally refunded me 25% back not 50%! WRONG! 4. The seedless Che tree was not sent, "wait 6 more weeks" for a total of 14 weeks! i paid for it, where is it. AGAIN, THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU. 5.
