Incredible team of staff. I always enjoy working out here! The gym and pool are great places to exercise and meet members of the community.

Duke Faculty Club - Brutal feedback from kids: "This water slide ends too soon and it sucks!"

"Tennis club/ pool/ fitness room & classes for faculty, staff, and alumni of Duke"…read more We've been coming here for 5 years now, and definitely like it overall. Best known for its multiple tennis courts, this facility also houses a large pool, a toddler pool, a lap pool, a fitness room, and basketball courts. They also regularly host activities such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day fun events, various summer cookouts, "parents' night out" events (where they'll keep your kids occupied while you go elsewhere), etc. My personal usage has been highest for the fitness room, which has treadmills, stairmasters, bikes, and assorted weight machines and free weights. It's not a big facility, but it's convenient (on campus at Duke), rarely crowded, and with low turnover among other users (you see the same people whenever you go). It also now opens at 6am, which makes it convenient to work-out before going to work. They host various fitness/ yoga/ nia classes (I think for a fee), and you can also reserve time with fitness trainer for a fee. For those who prefer to exercise outdoors, the Faculty Club abuts the Al Buehler running trail through the Duke Forest- a beautiful (but hilly!) 2.9 or 3.6 mile loop. You can run the trail then shower and/ or do weights at the Club. The big pool opens for general use in the summer, and sometimes has limited hours, but is still a big hit especially for people who don't have a neighborhood pool and want a clean and safe facility. It's often overrun by kids on hot days or holidays, but in a good way. It has a high-dive board, a regular dive board, and a twisty-slide into the pool. There are also shaded areas for parents to wait for their kids, thank goodness! There's been a lot of recent turnover in the director position, and some have been more responsive than others, but the current director is great- very involved and responsive. A year's family membership is currently $790, and comes with full access to all facilities (though some planned activities cost money). Members can bring guests to the facility for a small fee.

This is a delightful spot to swim in the summer. There are a couple lap pools, diving boards and tons of space for kids to splash around. If you're lucky enough to be able to join, you'll love the lush surroundings and access to AC'd locker rooms. Plus, there are snacks and grills available for use.

This is Duke! It's old, prestigious and has a gorgeous campus. My visit was late Summer of 2019 for…read morea swim recruiting visit that my son attended. The Wilson Rec Center is pretty central to campus and has student recreational activities. The pool is in the rear and is the only thing I saw. You can enter in front or rear for the aquatic complex. The building itself looks like "Duke". The brownstones are spectacular. Parking is reserved pretty much all around the building I found the visitors lot which is about a 3/4 mile walk. The area was clean and impeccably maintained. The aquatic complex is not as old as the building dating to possibly turn of the century. However it's no spring chicken either. Possibly built in the late 60's, not ruling out 70's. The pool and deck are maintained. Only faculty, staff and the swim and dive are permitted to use outside of special permission. My son enjoyed the pool. Although not a new pool it has underwent a couple of renovation projects over the decades. The most recent was around 11 years ago. The 25 yard pool with diving well is a nice set up for competition. Duke competes in the ACC Conference. The complex offers a compact spectator area on one side. Most reading this review will never get the opportunity to use the pool and probably never even see it. My son absolutely loved his time on campus and who knows could be a Blue Devil.

This review is exclusively about the Fitness Center (the building with the indoor exercise…read moreequipment) at Holmes Sr. Recreation Center. The Fitness Center is in a separate building from the rest of the main facility and its opening hours are different from the rest of the facility. The hours are rather odd but may be due to the lack of staffing though I'm not sure about that. In terms of the equipment, the Fitness Center has two treadmills, a few indoor bikes, a rowing machine, and a StairMaster StepMill (ones in which actual stairs revolve like an escalator). There are no elliptical machines. There are are a number of weight machines, and dumb bells. The equipment overall looks to be adequate for someone who is interested to do some strength/weight training and cardio. The staff tells me that the Fitness Center does not see much activity. The few times we've been, we were the only people there. The major negative about the Center really are the hours. It is open everyday except Sunday, but on the days they are open, there are hours in the middle of the day when the Center is not open. This punctuated schedule can make arranging one's exercise schedule a bit off.

My husband and I swim here once or twice a week all fall and winter, and it's great. Best of all, it's rarely crowded or noisy so I can have a lane to myself and meditate or vegetate happily as I do my laps. The location is not super-convenient for me, but I don't mind going a bit out of my way for the pleasure of a good swim. It can be a little hard to find if you're not familiar with that neighborhood, but it's very much worth it.
