There are also some outside basketball courts. There are several picnic tables, although we opted to just find a shady spot on the ground to set out a blanket for a picnic. We also noticed some permanent corn hole boards and horseshoe pits in front of the community center - but didn't inquire about getting the supplies for them.

That's the downside. The upside is that the rest of the park is well-kept and spacious for what it is. Lots of parking, and there are 8 tennis courts! And a large field (looks like it's primarily used for baseball and volleyball), plus built in bleachers for spectating. A little path through a wooded area leads you to the Vietnam Veterans memorial and spills into the Johnston Center parking lot (where you'll find an aquatic facility and more).

I run through this park when I'm on the Ellerbe Creek Trail and sometimes stop to grab a drink from the water fountains. Rock Quarry Park has athletic fields, greenway access, lights, picnic facilities, play grounds, restrooms, soccer fields, tennis courts, water fountains, and a youth baseball field. If you enter and following the parking lot straight down, you'll see a trail entrance. This trail (sometimes with use of sidewalks) leads to the Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial, Edison Johnson Recreation Center, Museum of Life and Science, and joins up with the Ellerbe Creek Trail. Do take note that the park is referred to as "Rock Quarry Park at Edison Johnson Recreation", the two kind of spill into one another. The ACTUAL park has the athletic fields, bathrooms and tennis courts, while the Recreation Center has everything else (even a pool and a splash pad!) And of course the Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial is located in the middle, on the path that connects the park to the recreation center. You will find people "hanging out" in their cars in the parking lot, like at most Durham Parks, but they've never bothered me. Overall, this is a great park for field activities, tennis and runners. I definitely pay it my park dues!

They have great amenities in making this a wonderful park. But.....way too much debris all over the park. Everywhere you looks you could see litter and it looks like it has been there for awhile. I understand people at times throw their trash anywhere when done with it. Too bad for that way of thinking. But.....the park division should monitor the park for debris and dog poo on the artificial soccer fields. There is a sign that says no dogs on artificial turf, but who reads anymore. I seen at least 8 dogs on the field and one at the far end doing his business , off the leash, no owner in sight to pick up the poo.

The owner couldn't control their dog and when I was finally able to get the attacking dog off my dog the owner did nothing and her dog again got a hold of my dog while we were trying to leave. once I was able to get the dog off my dog again. I took my dog away from the park to check her injuries (and mine from have to put fingers in that dogs mouth) while doing so the owner left without waiting to address the situation. what a mess. oh and while all this was happening. Two other dog owners just sat and watched.

I have since been back for another try but left halfway through in disappointment. The course is not marked very well and hard to navigate..i recommend looking up the course map online to help. Overall the course is run down and needs some definite help. It could be a really nice course! I've researched and emailed two different people on the parks and rec committee to try and give my opinion and even offer my services to help, but the only response made it evident that they didn't even actually read the email, just thought I was trying to rent out the ropes course..

The pool is surrounded by tall trees and gets a bit of shade later in the afternoon. There's a small diving board. You can buy drinks and popcorn fairly cheaply or get pizza delivered, and there's a grill for cooking out. It's a relaxed place to take your kids to the pool, or get a bit of sun. It's not optimal for swimming laps for a serious workout, but you could definitely do a few laps if you wanted to get in a little exercise. We were so happy to find this easygoing local spot to cool off in the summer in Hillsborough!

Mount Merrill Play-MOUND, part of Durham Central Park, is a true picture of what Durham is and how…read morethe community comes together to create and better our wonderful city. What began as a kickstarter project to make Durham Central Park an even better destination spot and give kids an activity, quickly took off. The community came together and raised $200,000 to fund the park. In addition to the food truck rodeos, skate park, farmers market and summer concert series that Durham Central Park offers, they now offer Mount Merrill, The play-mound offers two slides, a climbing net, great amphitheater seating, a ramp up to a "look-out!" area (you have to stretch your imagination here a bit), a boulder climb (mostly just piles of rocks) and lots of sculptural art (that was previously in the park and now is claimed by Mount Merrill). While Mount Merrill can't compare to many other play structures in the area, the tiny small mound is a lot of fun for kids of all ages (I too enjoy the big slide!) and I hope to see some improvements made to it in the summer months. Durham Central Park, with the addition of Mount Merrill, has quickly become a place for the whole family and a destination that I can see my nieces and nephews taking their children someday, just like I've taken them. Good job Durham, keep up the community building! I love the idea, it's just the size of the park that gives it a three-star, hopefully they'll add on to it in the summer!
