Edith Macefield is a folk hero who is known for refusing to sell her 108 year-old farmhouse for $1,000,000 to make way for a commercial development in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. As a real-estate holdout, she forced the developers to construct their multistory project around her home. Ironically, she became close friend's with the construction superintendent Barry Martin who functioned as a friend and caretaker in her later years. She left her home to him in her will. A year after her death, Disney's publicists attached balloons to the roof of her home to promote the film "Up" in which an aging widower's home is surrounded by an upcoming commercial development. The house is fenced off so you can't get too close. Can't believe a residential home is still in the middle of industrial buildings. If you're trying to take some photos, the person taking the photo will probably have to stand in the middle of the street to get everything in the photo. Just be careful!! I was so excited to learn that the house from Up! is here in Seattle. (Ok, I know Up is a commercial, but you know what I mean... the house that inspired Up!) I drove over to Ballard and circled the block a few times, looking for the house. I couldn't wait to get a picture! But, I found it all boarded up. I guess they're renovating it and raising it up, according to the sign. I'm afraid maybe that defeats the point of leaving it preserved, but what do I know? A true Seattle Landmark, no doubt. Nestled between (literally) the giant construction of a new shopping center is the tiny house of what was Seattle's Last Super Hero, Edith Macefield. Edith bought the house in 1966 and watched the Ballard neighborhood expand over the last 40+ years. When she was offered a lofty $1 Million for her plot last year, she refused, saying, "I don't want to move. I don't need the money. Money doesn't mean anything," Sadly, Edith passed away last week. No heirs, no living relatives, she's said to have left her home to one of the construction workers who's been taking care of her for the last few years. Stop by and check it out her house while you can. I took a sec today and did so myself. There's loads of flowers and letters tucked in her fence.. very nice to see. I was hoping they would have at least started on the renovations but as of May 2014, everything is still boarded up with no sign of progress. From the sign out front, it looks like phase one was supposed to be completed sometime in 2013 but there's nothing to show for it. It's a little out of the way from the city center, so unless you're trying to kill time (like we were before heading to the airport), I would skip it for now. There's an overgrown tree right in front of the house that pretty much blocks everything, and the boarded up look isn't very picturesque. To top it off, we saw a car get broken into with the windows smashed right across the street, so please be careful around this area. Prior to visiting, I read that the Edith Macefield house was the Inspiration for the Pixar Movie UP. It's a great place to stop by if you're a Disney fan. We took some quick pictures and were out of there in less than 30 minutes. This place is near Seattle so it was very convenient to stop by. The house and parking was fairly easy to find and there was also plenty of street parking when I stopped by. After reading up on Edith Macefield, I thought she was a brave woman to stand up to the big developers. However, it is sad to see the house boarded up, alone, and uninhabited because she worked so hard to keep her house standing. The house is a symbol and a reminder of what you can accomplish as it sits there surrounded by a big shopping Mall. read more

After our trip to many breweries around Ballard, we stumbled upon this by accident. At first it just looks like a worn down house over the years but then you find out the story of Edith Macefield. A defiant Edith stood for her house while everyone else decided to sell their property back in 2006. This is more than just a house but a symbol of history and the gentrification of many historic neighborhoods across the U.S. that are being torn down. I could feel a good energy coming from this house. Even after they tear it down and move the house to its new home wherever it may be, the building owner will have one heck of a time building on this land as a stubborn Edith Macefield can still be felt! :) read more

I recommend that you search out Edith's house. You can park in front and consider what would make this woman so defiant. This is a story about what is important in life. Edith had a very modest home. But it was hers. My home too is tiny and my life is relatively unremarkable. But it is mine. And it is important to me. People will probably view Edith's house a symbol of "Old Ballard" vs. "New Ballard". But I think this is missing the point. This was a strong woman who refused to be pushed out. It's fenced up & boarded and frankly very sad looking :( I wished there was more progress to it so it could be a cute landmark... but it's very far from that stage. Very impressive even in its boarded up state. It's worth a quick stop on the way to Old Ballard with all its shops, restaurants and bars. The Ballard Locks are only a 20 minute walk from here. The house is slated for auction in March 2015. Its days may well be numbered unless a preservation-minded buyer emerges.
