Knocked off one star because, just why?? LOL OVERALL, a really cool, eclectic, unique, and odd photo op while entering the pike place market in downtown Seattle. When you put it out of your mind that you are possibly touching another strangers gum it's a fun and once in a lifetime experience. Plenty of people were there with their tripods in their cameras, ready to document it. It gets packed on the weekends with all the tourists but if you go during the week, you can have more time to pick the perfect spot for a photo. This area has basically two sides where the walls have all been "stamped" with gum. Different colors, sizes. The walls were actually cleaned up once before but locals kept going and sticking chewed gum to the walls. You can become part of the wall if you want. This popular spot is in Post Alley within the Pike Place Market. The tradition started with theater actors sticking their gum on the wall outside for good luck and it got picked up by the crowd. Now the alley has all types and colors of gum sticking on the walls. Some are dangling on the utility pipes. As cool as the walls appear as modern art, it feels pretty gross too. It the second most germiest place in the world. Every few years the city cleans about 2,350 lbs of gums from these walls. The alley is dark even on a bright sunny day. There are also no sighs or warnings regarding health hazard it could cause lol! read more

I feel like the Gum Wall can be a little tricky to find if it's your first time visiting, but once you finally get there, it's so cool to see how it looks exactly like all the pictures you've seen!! Completely covered in gum from top to bottom!! There are soooo many pieces stuck everywhere, and some are even hanging at this point lol. It can get pretty crowded, but even then it's not too hard to find a spot to stand and take pictures at, or even add your own gum to the wall. Yes, it can be a bit stinky and yes, it can gross out a few people, but I went for the photo ops and the experience. I refused to touch the wall or even add to it. But I definitely took a few pics including a selfie. Iconic staple of Seattle and unique- never have I ever been to a gum wall that people admire for "funskies" Quick visit and off to the next task. The Gum Wall is one of these odd places that people visit. Located at Pike Place Market, I saw the sign that indicated that I should go down the stairs to find The Gum Wall... at Post Alley... ok... Yes, it seems unsanitary... I held my breath and didn't touch anything!!! It is amazing that people want to contribute to this mural of chewing gum! There are many colors and designs... Located down Post Alley on the eastern edge of Pike Place Market, it's kitty corner from Ghost Alley Espresso that has both the benefit and drawback of hundreds of tourists walking by daily snapping pictures of gum and themselves with gum. Last week wasn't my time seeing the gum wall though that didn't stop me from looking at it again hah. Though I have to say my more recent previous visit was after the rain so I didn't recall the smell of chewed gum in the alley the way it was apparent on a warm sunny afternoon this time around. Definitely weird. I feel that I should get some sort of medical shot for seeing this. It's just one of those things that you can say; "Ok I've been there, let's go" And I know this place keeps growing, because there were people chewing gum and sticking it on the wall, and on the lamp post, and on the street sign, and anywhere else they could. Wrigley, Big League Chew, juicy fruit, Dubble Bubble, Big Red, Chiclets, Hubba Bubba, Bee-mans (my least favorite) they all have to be up here. Overall four stars. IDK how to rate this. While in Seattle... We had to see the iconic gum alley. I have been to a Gum Alley in Sna Luis Opisbo, this one is much larger and it was an uphill hike for us from where we were. There were dozens of people taking photos, sticking gum or throwing it on to the walls. It was definitely something to see while in the city, its not something I would go greatly out of my way for, but being in the vicinity. It was reallt cool to see. read more

When you face the main entrance to the market, along the side, left side there is a ramp down to the lower market: this is where you'll find gum alley. Out of all the silly tourist trap things around this one actually surprised me. It's larger than I imagined and the colors really pop in pictures. It's colorful, unique, beyond amazing but in the same breath it's nasty , disgusting, and looks like a glob of mess. It's a street long of ppl nasty chewed up gum placed on the wall and ground . I was told every couple of months a water hose is sprayed to keep it clean ( as clean as it gets lol) It's more of an exhibition at this point . Not as gross as I was expecting especially after I went to the Bubble Gum Alley in San Luis Obispo in California in the spring of 2024 I was expecting Seattles more famous alley to be 10 times worse, but it turns out the city recently cleaned the wall in November of 2024. Regardless of the gross factor if you're doing the tourist stuff in Seattle, Pikes place will most likely be on that list & if you're coming to Pikes place you might as well check out the alley. I forgot to buy gum prior to coming here but the Old Fashion Candy store upstairs has a variety of gum for sale for $2.50 each. The alley is at least walking through since it leads to other streets in the area while you're site seeing. read more

Gaaaaaahh! Ewww! [Seattle WA] Revisited Pike Place in Seattle and this was my first time seeing the Gum Wall on Post Alley near Pike Street. We couldn't find the brick wall the first time we were here in 2015. Although seeing it was gross and is probably not for everyone, I've actually seen worse - try visiting Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo CA where a long narrow alley is covered in used chewing gum on BOTH sides of the walls. Try not to lose your balance while walking through it. This pedestrian-friendly street at the Post Alley is just below Pike Place Market and it is a wide street and probably not to everyone's "taste" (pun not intended) but it is worth seeing the colorful display, many stuck them in a ball, some stretched out hanging, and some were creative and carved their initials made of chewed gum. The alley doesn't stink at all, thankfully. Prob thanks to the open air and fresh breeze of Puget Sound. . Moderately crowded. - Prob gonna have to park at one of the structures a 5-10min walk away. This alley next to Pike Place Market is a unique area to walk through. At the same time, it is also very disgusting. I have been here so many times and have seen all sorts of colors of chewing gum on this wall. Some of the gum droops and others have paper or coins stuck in them. People will make small works of art like hearts with their gum. They get pretty creative with how they stick their gum to this wall. The Post Alley Gum Wall started in the 1990's when people would wait in line to see a show at the nearby improv theater company. Because they don't allow chewing gum inside the theater, patrons would stick their gum on the wall while waiting in line. It is an interesting story on how this tourist attraction started. They do from time to time clean the wall because the acidic properties of the gum damage the building's brick. But it doesn't take long for the gum to return. It is definitely worth a look at this hidden but famous piece of art if you are visiting Seattle. read more
