The host told me they were all booked up, and gestured to the dining room that they had all booked up. It was half empty so I assumed he was joking, but wanted to appear respectful, in case they had filled up in the 10 minutes it had been since I checked. The conversation then stopped there. Nope. He was serious. Looked online as I was leaving. I could have booked a table for two 10 minutes after I was leaving. They just didn't want us to actually be there. I'm quite excited to find this place. Having lived in New York where sushi was on my doorstep, I miss it. So even though it hasn't quite reached Penge, I'm glad there's a sushi pace just up the hill! Instead of ordering sushi in and dealing with it after a 20 minute rest in plastic containers, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant and have it as fresh as possible. The restaurant is divided into two sections, the first is at the front and has very normal tables and chairs. The second part is up a couple of steps and has tables with sunken seats. It takes a moment to work out how to slide in and sit, but once you are in there, it's very comfy. (just don't drink too much and try to get out again!) The service was brilliant. They really cannot do enough to help and are so sweet and nice to chat to. The decor is very slightly cold, and there weren't too many people in there with us, but it was fine. The food was a bit mixed. The prawn tempura was ok, but the vegetable tempura was really really boring. We didn't finish it and I don't think I would order tempura again from them. The miso soup was lovely, really really nice and I savoured every drop. The sushi and sashimi was great - fresh, delicious and quite perfect. I have also tried their Katsu curry (YUM) and their beef noodle ramen - also yum. Very generous with extremely nice, lean beef and lovely crispy greens. read more

A strange thing to find in the depths of Crystal Palace. This Japanese restaurant serves excellent Japanese food including a great range of sushi. It's not too expensive, especially the bento boxes which are terrific value. The decor in here is very cool and sort of hard to desribe - so I guess you'll just have to go and see for yourself. The main point of interest is the floor/seating. Service is faultless. Definitely recommended. read more

YUM! so good. my boyfriend and i live local and sometimes get take away from here. it's really delicious! we love japanese food, so it is amazing to be able to get our favourite delivered right to our door. i haven't tried the sushi or sashimi yet (despite loving both) because i can never get past the extremely good value bento boxes and their delicious edamame! one day i plan to actually visit the restaurant in person and go for a sit down meal...and when i do, i will force myself into trying other things on the menu! read more

Excellent restaurant in South London. You will definitely won't find better sushi around this area. Good prices - good food. What else can I say. Just go there and try. Can't comment on the restaurant per se, but can definitely wholeheartedly recommend their takeaway/delivery service. If you're lucky enough to live in their area of coverage, particularly noteworthy are the scallop sashimi and black cod teriyaki; delivery times can be erm, flexible, but definitely worth the wait. By the second or third time you've tried it you'll find your problem becomes not overordering; it's all so good ! read more

We discovered a little place in Fulham that had the best Japanese food. They closed all of a sudden; we were naturally gutted about it. Since then we were on the hunt to replace that missing hole and I think we've nailed it on the head with our latest take away experience. Brave enough we ordered a few dishes and it was damn good! The steamed rice is just the way we like it and the teriyaki dishes are too die for. Obviously a bit pricier than getting a chow-mein at your local Chinese take away but you will fall in love with Japanese food if you visit Edo! This wonderful Japanese gem in Crystal Palace is a must-go for anyone in south/south-east London. One visit is all it takes to make this place into your regular haunt. We went for the first time just last night, and already I am planning on what I want to order the next time around! Inspired by the numerous positive reviews both here on Qype and around the internet, we were definitely not disappointed. We sat in the back section, which are these built sunk-in tables that give the perception of authentic on-the-floor Japanese dining but the comfort of still being able to dangle your legs. Despite it being a Saturday night, the place was quiet (though we did go quite early - it did start to pick up as we were leaving). Don't let the tatty menus put you off - the food will outshine any aesthetic shortcomings of Edo. The atmosphere is extremely relaxed and soothing. We were in a sushi mood, so that's what we had. The mixed sashimi platter did not disappoint - Edo resists the temptation to fool the diner with cheap fish, but instead puts high-quality tuna and red snapper even on its mixed platters. Our sushi rolls were a bit small (more hosomaki-sized rather than the customary futomaki), but very tasty - try the eel & cucumber for a real treat! To finish it off, a large bowl of green tea ice cream (for the bargain price of £2.50!!) - the only place I've been to so far in London that serves this!! My other half had deep-fried ice cream coated in coconut (he proclaimed it 'gorgeous'). In summary, we paid under £50 for drinks, large amounts of quality sashimi/sushi & deseert. Wow, beat that in London. Edo offers real value-for-money for sushi lovers with shallow pockets. The food is great for what you pay, and even though the menu isn't hugely diverse, it's enough to satisfy both Japanese food lovers and newbies alike. I admit that walking past Edo I would not be tempted to go in for a meal, but having experienced their Japanese cuisine, I would definitely recommend it. Open for lunch and for dinner, they serve all sorts of Noodles, Sashimi, Sushi, Curries and Tempura. Should you not be familiar with Japanese food, the hosts here are more than willing to explain the meals and help you make a decision. The tables are low down and sunken in true Japanese style and every meal I have ever eaten here has been delicious. I would definitely recommend Edo as a restaurant and a take away. read more

I didn't have the sushi but a bowl of the miso ramen instead. Nice broth, chewy noodles with some pieces of Napa cabbage, wakame and tasteless slices of pork. Nothing to rave home about and I suspect it's a Chinese cook rather than Japanese. It really lacked the lovely presentation style that Japanese food should have. read more

My girls and I wanted to try these Japanese Reastaurant in Crystal Palace. I think it was because in one section of the restaurant you actually have to sit down in the tipical japanese floor-mats. The atmosphere was really oriental (the predominant green colour decorations makes the place look natural) and the food was really good. Usually you see loads of Chinese restaurants around and not many of the Japanese ones. This one was really a nice trial for us. Not to talk of the Sushi; a delicatessen. We did not find it too expensive and we will probably go back when we are on holidays. A nice piece of Japan. read more

Absolutely dreadful. Food very very late (2 hours from ordering to delivery) rand after waiting one hour to be told 2 minutes, trust me. Rang again after a further 45 minutes and was met with rudeness, swearing and then they hung up. This was very upsetting. Food eventually arrived cold and with two dishes missing but I did not dare call back, nor do I think they would have done anything about it. Edo sushi is amazing and worth visiting even if you don't live South of the River. The fish is really fresh. I would particularly recommend the sashimi and the special tempura roll. I highly recommend both eat in and takeaway at Edo. The food is really delicious. The prices great and the service really good. They are ultra friendly and really put their selves out to give you great service. All round it's fantastic value and a really good place to eat. Nice people, great food and ambiance. I like to sit in the back of the restaurant on their Japanese style seating too. The standard of the take away too is fantastic. I have had take aways from them many times.
