After a horrible experience two years ago, I thought let's give this guy another try this Saturday. Boy-Oh-boy it was a big mistake. 1. He was yelling at customers and was unhappy that he's getting lots of customers on Saturday afternoon for haircuts. A word of advice if you're reading this - just pray to god that you're at least getting customers to your business. 2. When my turn came - he yelled at me saying why did you call before coming here? You should just come over. Ohh yea? I said why. He was like Saturday I would like to close early. I don't want to be here till 7. I totally understand. Btw your business hours are till 4 pm. Not that I came at 3:55 pm. 3. He asked me how do you like my haircut? I said just trim it on side and regular setup. He yelled at me again -"just say short or medium? Just tell me that I know what I'm doing". I said medium but he did what he wanted to do anyway! I was so furious on the chair..!! He realized that I did not like it. Then he asked me so where have been getting your haircut lately? I politely said - some place better than yours! 4. While I was getting haircut, another gentleman walks in the shop. He did it again - "DID YOU CALL?" Mind you is about 1:30 PM not even close to 4 PM. And this time the problem was he didn't call. 5. Hairs all over the shop. I would advise you take your business elsewhere. My fiancé and I just came in around 2:30 on a Saturday. He was the fourth person in line. This was my fiancé's second time here. He warned me that the last time he came, he waited a very long time (about an hour), the owner was crass, but that he liked the haircut. The first time he went, I called ahead to ask what the wait was like, and then Ed made fun of us to my fiancé when he came in that I was the one in charge and doing things for him or telling him what to do. My fiancé also warned me that the owner doesn't seem to like women too much, but again it was worth it because of the haircut and these other issues didn't seem like too big of a deal last time. I was inside for 2 minutes, quietly sitting using my phone to check emails, when a customer walked in, saw the line of 4, and left. Two minutes later, another guy walked in and decided to stay. The owner, Ed, turned to me and said with an attitude, "I'm sorry but I'm going to have to ask you to go. The guys come in here and they see the line. They say 'I can wait for 3 but not 4' so they leave. Did you see when the guy just came in here and left? It was because you're sitting here. You're losing me customers. You need to go." I said ok, got up, and left. Do you really think that a man would walk in, see me, and assume I'm in line? With my long curly hair? He would walk in and think that Ed is going to cut my hair? Maybe instead they're turned off by this shop's slow pace, Ed's attitude, or the dreary interior. There were plenty of open seats, and I'm not sure it was my fault he was losing business. I can only hope that others decide that Ed's Barber Shop isn't for them either because they hate a rude business owner, they don't want to wait forever, or that they'd rather give their business to another local shop in Providence. I want to like this place, but Jaques' aggressiveness with the trimmer just can't be excused. Twice I had my beard trimmed and ended up with infected skin. Today I had my hair cut and he jammed the trimmer into my neck and ear like there was no tomorrow. Maybe he just doesn't like me but I'm through with this place. Not for me. Ed construed a comment about how my girlfriend liked my last haircut (not by him) as "a broad telling me how to cut hair". Yes, he used the word "broad." I have to admit that at first, I was charmed by this quaint shop abutting a shoe repair store. I'm sure Ed and many others would say that I should grow a tougher skin, but I'm one of those people who thinks a barber should make pleasant conversation or none at all. Instead, I sat there while Ed chewed into "nagging girlfriends", much to the delight of the other guys waiting for him. I wasn't amused, and was mostly silent-- who's going to get tough with the guy you've trusted your hair to? Surely this review will give him fodder for weeks of rants. Yuk it up, fellas. Legitimately the worst haircut in my life. Waited a lot, around 2 hours for 2 people ahead of me - both of them with short hair - then my haircut was way too shorter than I asked for. I asked for a fairly simple maintenance haircut, to keep the look as it was, but he took his own way going way too far and did not really set me up for a good look once the hair would naturally grow. Like in another review on this side, I got a few cuts as well at the top of my ear and around the side beard. Not advised for anything else than military style haircuts. read more

I have tried plenty of places on the east side and keep finding myself coming back to Ed. It is $17, but you get the true barber experience complete with dirty jokes, no women allowed, and a quality, no frills haircut. As others have said, it is worth it for the cut and shave but be prepared to wait because it is not quick. Great little old-fashioned barbershop... if you're in your 20's like me, it's the kind of place your father has told you about but you probably haven't been to yourself. Nothing fancy, just Ed and another barber going about their business and doing it well. He's been cutting hair for 50 years and he knows his stuff. Love the atmosphere, including the Playboys and the banter between the guys. Makes you wonder if we're really doing things better these days. It's $17 for a standard cut, but if you go to Supercuts or a place like that you're probably going to pay around $15 plus tip anyway. I'll take a visit to Ed's any day. An added bonus: the first time I went, there was an Asian family - mother, father, grandmother, and numerous children - all packed in waiting for their cut. It was about as far from the normal Ed's clientele as you can imagine. The women kept getting involved in the haircuts and giving advice on what to do... complete with demanding and critical comments. They didn't know what to make of the place and Ed and the other guy didn't know what to make of them! I give them credit, though, for handling an exasperating and awkward situation the right way. Now he's up to $16 for a men's, but it's definitely worth the trip just to experience an original barbershop from simpler times. The guy still trims your neck with a straight razor! This drunken, foul-mouthed imbecile cut off half of my bead and managed to take a chunk out of my neck before I could stop him. his eyes were blurry and smelled of scotch. Something I failed to notice until after he had mangled my facial hair. He gave the guy in front of me a what appeared to be a nice "fade" job which the guy genuinely appreciated. To be entirely honest, the biggest appeal for me at Ed's Barber Shop is just that I can go in and get a no BS hair cut. I've been twice, and have been quite pleased with the results. I understand some people have had mixed results in regards to customer service, but I'm just thankful I can go somewhere without being charged 40 dollars for a hair cut. Ed is meticulous and professional, and will make sure you're happy with your cut. I almost always have to ask for special attention in a couple of areas (where my hair sticks up), and he was very good about taking care of these. The only thing I would mention is that this is not a place to go if you're in a hurry. This was the first time I'd been to a barber shop (rather than a salon with appointments), so I wasn't sure what to expect. I arrived at about 8:45 on a Wednesday morning, sat through two cuts ahead of me, and was out by 10:00. It didn't seem excessive, but it's definitely something you have to plan for. Ed has been cutting hair for over fifty years - and he knows what looks good on a guy's head. His haircuts are sharp and timeless. Sometimes you don't get exactly what you are looking for (he offers you two options "on the short side" or "on the long side"). If you want to be picky about the haircut, like I am, you should be specific with him. For example, an inch off the top, half an inch off the sides. Ed's banter can be a little offensive if you don't have a thick skin. I'm a RISD student, and he has a joke that he tells every time about art school students' hair styles. He also likes to brag about how his haircuts get guys laid. It's a little unnecessary, but you'd get bored too if you were doing the same thing for over 50 years. The reason I come back time and again is because the hair cuts are excellent, and I'm very picky about my haircuts. Ed is the only guy I trust. I was quite happy with All the haircuts I received for over two years. The issue I have is the place doesn't take appointments and if there are 3-4 people waiting, it is a waste of time. On top of that Ed gives you that death stare if you come late in the afternoon. Apologies Ed as some people work too. My breaking point came a few months ago when Ed sliced up my skin behind my ear. He had a fresh blade in his straight razor and that was the reason. He had the nerve to ask me if I was taking blood thinners! Really!! You just butchered me and now I'm to blame? Not worth it. I feel bad as his son is really an awesome guy who gives great haircuts. I had an important client meeting that night that I had to cancel because of the cut. I've been in Providence now for about 4 weeks and was entirely in need of getting my do did. I generally like barbers over salons but am hard to please when it comes to the haircuts. Ed has been in business for fifty some years, probably in the same location. I like this place. The walls are decked out with bad prints, art, and pictures of loved ones. There is a pretty standard line of chairs and a pile of newspapers and magazines to read while you wait. I sat in the chair, gave him a run down of what I wanted and closed my eyes and when the cut was over I was pleasantly surprised when I opened them up. Firstly, he is conservative on the amount that he takes off which is a breath of fresh air. I can't even count how many barbers i've told to leave the front longer only to have them hack the daylights out of it. The cuts are $17. I mean c'mon, how can any guy go to supercuts when you can have someone shave the back of your neck with a straight razor. He recommended that I do natural in back but i always opt for straight across. I think he cropped it a bit too high, so you might want to go natural when you go in. I started going to Ed's 5 years ago when I moved to the East Side. I've since moved to W. Warwick and again to East Greenwich, but I still get my hair cut at Ed's because his hair cut is spot on and consistent. His son Ed also works there and gives a great cut as well. They use a straight razor around your ears and neck, which I prefer, but may not be for the faint of heart, but I've never even been nicked. If you don't feel like waiting in line, get there when he opens at 6 AM, especially on the weekends. Bring cash. Also, this men's barber shop is surprisingly not a front for the women's liberation and/or feminist movement. If you value political correctness or are easily offended, I suggest going to fantastic sams, but I prefer to support a local family business. read more

First to start with the positive. Ed gave fantastic haircuts and being located in the Wayland Square area made him easily walkable. However, the barbershop experience itself drove me away. My first ever visit he was complaining the whole time about a bad Yelp review that called him sexist because he referred to women as "broads." He just kept reiterating that was what women were called when he grew up. I didn't mind the conversation at first but it really did not need to last for the duration of my entire cut. My next visit he spent the whole time complaining about a previous customer's girlfriend who had the audacity to be the one to tell him what cut to give her boyfriend instead of the guy himself. My third visit he mocked me/my haircut (which was a standard fade) claiming a broad must have cut my hair because that was the only way it could be so bad and went into a 15 minute diatribe against women. Irony is he was the last person to cut my hair so he was referring to himself the entire time. I just sat there with my mouth shut waiting to be able to leave. When it came time to get my next haircut, I decided the quality of cut and the convenient location where not worth it and found another family owned shop a little further away with a better atmosphere. I haven't been back since and do not regret that decision. To be clear, if you go to Ed's you will likely get a great haircut, its just a matter of whether the rest of the experience is to your liking. I used to have my haircut with Ed before when I live close by. He has the best cut in the area. After moving out of the neighborhood and not seeing him for two years, I paid a visit last year. He didn't recognize me and asked what type of cut I wanted. So I said #2 on the side and slight trim on top. I'm not sure if he heard me right but he used the clipper #2 on my top 1st. Visited the barbershop on a Wednesday afternoon, and I waited for about an hour until it was my turn because there were 2 people came in before me and Ed was the only that working. It is OK though because that means Ed took his time with each customer. He is also a "social butterfly", he will chat to you about anything from good spots to eat in the neighborhood (since I just moved to Providence) to how to get girls' numbers. Very down to earth guy. His son came in (his name is also Ed) and he was the one who cut my hair. He was very polite, I showed him a picture of my haircut from my last barber. He cut it even better.
