I had been misdiagnosed for years and been through a few poor therapists before finally finding him & having him confirm my OCD diagnosis. I believe that the trust I placed in this well-intentioned, but seemingly misguided therapist was a…read moremisplaced trust. I believe that the therapist provided me with a space that was physically safe, but did not provide me with a space where I was emotionally safe. The cliched decorative theme of the office, mimicked the decorative themes of therapist's offices I've been visiting since the 1980s. For me, it was "déjà vu" all over again! I've had good experiences in these sacred spaces and there was no reason for me to suspect that this time, my experience would be different. I entered this therapist's office and was immediately overwhelmed by the fragrance(s) coming from multiple open-flame-fragrance-delivery-systems (a.k.a. lit candles) that were distributed around the room. The last time I'd experienced so many lit candles, I was visiting a mid-sized French basilica. Although overwhelming, the fragrances did trigger memories of other sacred spaces that I've experienced, enjoyed, and trusted. I was safe in those other sacred spaces, so why would I not trust this space? This was a space that invited me to reveal my innermost thoughts, and that's exactly what I did. It is my belief that whether visiting a church, a temple, or synagogue, there is one steadfast rule: be quiet, be respectful, and don't disrupt the proceedings with beliefs that might cause grief to others visiting the same sacred space. Apparently not everyone shares this belief. I ask nothing of others that I don't ask of myself. I believed that the therapist and I had a mutual duty to respect: one another, the therapeutic process, and the sanctity of the office where our appointment took place. I believe that a reasonable person would have a reasonable expectation for the therapist to recognize and execute their duties. I believe that the therapist's primary duty was to sit quietly and respectfully while we both got to know one another. I believe that this therapist had the capacity to execute this duty, but for reasons unknown, chose other behaviors. As the first session began, we began building trust and rapport with one another. About halfway through our first session, I began sharing highly emotional biographical information. I did this because I felt we had reached a point where I could trust them with sensitive information. I was speaking about how my 17-year-old (lesbian) aunt was decapitated in 1937, and how her uncle (my great uncle) was murdered in a gay-bashing in 1962. The therapist interrupted my story and informed me that he was ending the session. They then cancelled the other two appointments we'd agreed to. I believe that with this therapist's actions, the sanctity of safe space I was sitting in was disrupted, and the contract that we had both relied on (and were to receive benefit from) was breached. I believe that this action was irrational, mean-spirited, and harmful. I believe that the decision to immediately terminate our contractually agreed upon sessions shows a callous indifference to my emotional well-being. I believe that this therapist's actions can best be attributed to what I would describe as sudden-onset Napoleonic Complex. All this therapist had to do was sit quietly, and to their best of their abilities, provide me with the usual and customary services that we had agreed to. I believe that the therapist did not act in a fashion that could be described as the best of their abilities.
