My son lived here for one semester. I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially for the amount of money they charge. First of all, upon arrival in September, the room was filthy. Disgusting, really. It was not cleaned at ALL. The bathroom was dirty and hair clogged the shower drain, there was crud all over the floor, old FOOD in the refrigerator, etc. This was a Friday evening. The situation was not resolved until they brought cleaners in Sunday evening, so we had to pay for 2 nights in a hotel and move in on Monday. The room was only slightly better on that day though, and we still had to buy cleaning products and scrub it down. My son informed them of all of this verbally and in a survey sent to him, but no compensation (or even an apology) was offered by EHS. Moreover, there were significant privacy and security issues. After completely moving in, a painter was let into my son's room while he was at school. All of his stuff which had just been moved in and set up was piled into the middle of the room and they painted around it -- then left the door OPEN when they were done. He returned to find his expensive camera and computer equipment in an unsecured room. Shortly after that, an RA let themself into his room (without even knocking), thinking he wasn't there. When asked why, there was no reason. This happened several times when he wasn't there (caught on camera) and was quite concerning. RA's should not be letting themselves into student's rooms. That kind of violation can't be undone. My son stayed with friends most of the semester as he didn't feel safe there, and we ultimately wasted a lot of money. Couldn't wait to get him out of there! NOTE for NYU students: The reason we applied to EHS was to get a single, which is hard to come by in NYU dorms. However, because NYU has a large portion of the Clark wing at St. George Towers, I was told by EHS that all NYU students must book through NYU's housing office. I was told this AFTER the NYU housing application deadline, even though we had stated my son went to NYU on the form weeks prior. So that left us in a lurch for housing. NYU ultimately made an exception after they heard what EHS had done to us. The whole process was exasperating and, in hindsight, I realized we could've literally put our son up in a lower-priced hotel for the same amount of time with far less stress for all of us. *I'm giving a second star on my review only because the view from the room was lovely and the building itself has a wonderful history. Lobby is beautiful with good lighting, chandelier, pool area, and sitting area to do study There are additional rooms that you can stay in, think of like a big glass room with a couch and mini table. There are also conference rooms to study with groups Yes, there are INDIVIDUAL bathrooms. You won't have to share with your floor. Cafeteria gives comfy feel. If you decide you want to cook be there early or get your spot cuz it gets packed. The rooms? Ok size. It's NOT huge but it gives studio room. If you can avoid staying here, you should. It's quite unfortunate that people coming to New York for school often have no other option for housing if your parents aren't loaded/have a guarantor. Regardless, the issues here are rampant. There is only one laundry room for 3 entire buildings available, and you must have cash to refill your laundry card because the credit card machine doesn't work. The hot water and AC regularly dont work and maintenance will not be responsive to this. Also, they hold your packages hostage for the entire day and won't let you pick them up until they "scan" it, you don't get to just go to the mailroom and retrieve it. If you clearly have a lot of stuff in your hands and wish to use the larger entrance instead of the turnstiles to enter the building, security won't just open the door but make you take out your card and drop your things before you can go through the gate. Also, there is a major fruit fly problem that will not go away, in fact it was prevalent the first day I arrived. Also, leave your room 10 minutes before you need to go anywhere because the elevators are exceptionally slow and I have waited over 10 minutes for the elevator to reach my floor or even in the lobby. There are limited study rooms available and often times only has 1 person inside. Reaching out to the staff doesn't help as they say they are working on things and nothing happens, or they just straight up don't respond. If this place weren't so expensive I would be more lenient with these deficiencies but paying as much as I do and not even having my own kitchen is ridiculous. Genuinely the only plus side is the subway being directly next door, but the actual quality of living in the dorm itself is sad. Update! There are now roaches and they turn the heat on for the entire building once the temperature drops below 70 so it's HOT, and their only solution is to open a window, which mind you only opens 2 inches. My daughter lived here for 2.5 years. It was a great experience. She was able to go to college in Brooklyn and get a dorm experience. Whenever she had an issue it was resolved in a good amount of time. The price of her room and her tuition was that of a SUNY upstate. The rooms were nice. The area is Brooklyn Heights which is great. The subway under the building is great. If you are looking for a nice place to live while going to college in New York City this is it. read more

I stayed here for my first year at the New York film academy. Upon my arrival I was given a room with black mold growing in the tub, and a huge hole in my closet. Huge enough to fit a raccoon. Instead of fixing any issues. I was told "it's not a lot of mold" and instead of fixing the hole, they placed mouse traps all over it. That room was so bad I never once had an opportunity to use the shower. I had to use a friends every day. Whenever I was in that room the mold would cause me to get skin issues. Eventually I was moved to the room next door, which was so much better. However I had hard time sleeping at night due to the amount of rats in the walls clawing away. The place has a horrible mouse problem. They were all over the 8th floor, and fit under our front door cracks. So there were many days of chasing mice with brooms and having to do extensive cleansing because they would scatter around. Security guards aren't much security to be honest as well. Overall a very negative experience. Over priced for what you get. You're paying for the area and prehistoric appliances. I wish I had reported the mold to a housing authority. They need authority to whip their issues in shape. Get an apartment for a year. You're paying the same price as you are for 3 months here and you're getting more out of it. read more

In short, he was a pleasure to work with. He has been replaced by "Kim" who begrudgingly gave me her name after I asked three times who I was speaking to on the phone. I could almost hear her eyes roll. I couldn't have been more polite in my inquiry. What has happened to phone manners? I love the building but this leasing agent needs the heave-ho. Constant construction. Hallways are always being painted random colors - based on what is cheapest at the paint store that day apparently! Very ugly colors. A/c system is moldy and gives you constant head colds and sinus issues. Leak in ceiling over my bed has been there most of this year and can't get it fixed. TV hasn't worked the entire year. If it were possible to give no stars out then I would. This place was terrible. My boyfriend stayed at the St. George Hotel location over the summer. It's the equivalent of living in a dirty college dorm... if you are over the age of 18 I highly suggest not staying there. Also, you have to register your guests ahead of time in order for them to stay in the apartment that you are renting and paying for! They charge you something like $15 a night for guests as well. In addition, your guests are not able to come and go without you. You must be there with them in order to get in, and they must have the proper identification to enter with you. That's right, you can't just bring a friend in with you to visit or hang out. They have to be registered and given a pass. OK so they have an insane guest policy, but do they at least make it possible to get by? NO. After being registered at the front desk by some extrememly unhelpful RA's who were clearly just as miserable working there as we were staying there, we were not given the proper guest pass. As we entered using the back door later that day, we were screamed at and harassed for not having the correct pass. Our reaction? NOT our problem as we had indeed already filed all of the correct paper-work. We ignored the angry man and proceeded to the room that we were paying for. We were then accosted in the elevator and told that he was going to call the police and have me arrested for trespassing. We exchanged some choice words in the lobby, making this the second time in my life that I have ever verbally berated someone in public. We were then told to leave the building and walk around to the proper entrance to be seen there. Really? We were fifteen feet from the proper entrance doors. We proceeded to walk through the lobby to the welcome in desk, all-the-while being verbally raped by an angry doorman because we walked fifteen feet through the lobby rather than walking outside and around to go to the exact same place. Everyone was extremely apologetic because they realized that they had just royally fucked up, but the damage had already been done. The problem with this place was that they treat it like brothel and make it impossible to enter the premises without paying out the ass and registering every guest. If you are paying so much to rent out your own room and stay here, you should be able to have guests come and go as you please. Other problems: The room was filthy when moving in, and the fridge smelled awful. They basically told us to just deal with it. The cable went out at least five times in the 6 week period. No one showed up to the scheduled check out session... the one that they will charge you for not scheduling. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed either of us have ever experienced... and that is after living in college dorms for two years while in college! All around AWFUL experience. It is my impression that they only stay in business because of young professionals visiting the city for temporary internships who have no where else to go because apartments don't come with a 3 month lease. You pay 12-14 thousand dollars to share a double room the size of a single. You also need to pay 10 dollars to bring your guests in. The Resident Director lets not get started. Breaks into your room while you are not home and searches through your drawers, claiming they smelled contraband odors when you ask them to check the cameras to confirm indeed nobody has entered your room all day, they refuse to. You know exactly HOW I KNOW THIS?! BECAUSE I HAD A WEBCAM SET UP ON MY LAPTOP FACING THE entrance to my ROOM AND I HAVE the video still to this date of someone from the staff cleverly keying into my room, slowly opening the door finding out there was nobody then going through my desk. Yes EHS i have you on tape. We lost heat for a week in December, lost hot water for 10 days also in the wintertime, DID NOT HAVE INTERNET CONNECTION FOR A MONTH AND A HALF!!! If you are going to live in NYC, you are better off paying the money for your own room in surrounding Brooklyn or Manhattan Area. 14 grand for people to tell you to pay 10 dollars to bring in guests. Are you out of your dam mind? What a bunch of crooks! The ONLY good employee of EHS was Lindy. She was the only person who tried her best efforts to accomdate all issues in a professonial manner. Its a shame such professional is wasting her talent in a place where 99% of all other staff were crooks. read more

If they took hotel out of the name maybe this place would be ok. Pretty lobby and first floor community areas. Dorms aboves. There was a turd in my toilet when I checked in, despite the paper band that says "sanitized" around the toilet seat. My main issue is not that it's a dorm, it's the utter lack of service or assistance from the staff. Check in took more than 45 minutes and they could not/would not answer any questions. All the parents of the students living here during summer internships were very irked at how they were being treated. The wifi was quite slow/spotty. I did like the gym that was included-- that's a great deal. And the location cannot be beat. So I suggest that EHS revamp it's customer service and provide better guest accommodation. read more

The St. George is a mixed bag. It's a great place to meet people, and has an even better location, but the neglected rooms and unreliable facilities at times make it feel more like an unsavory hostel than off-campus student housing. I could certainly live with the minor annoyances I dealt with during my ten-week stay over the summer, but what really wore on me at EHS were the conditions beyond the residence's pristine ground floor. The hallways smelled of moldy carpet and I dealt with regular maintenance issues in my room (a broken door handle, a faulty toilet, a worn-out A/C unit, and a chronic bug problem). Granted, the St. George is an old building and EHS's staff were generally understanding and accommodating whenever there was an issue. There were some nice perks thrown in (including free access to the athletic club next door and discounts at nearby businesses) and I also can't forget to mention that Brooklyn Heights is a great neighborhood to live in, with three subway stations each within a five-minute walk and a nearby park and promenade with amazing views of Manhattan and the East River. Would I stay here again, though? Probably not. If you have a few months before arriving in the city, try booking a room at an NYU dorm or use Airbnb if meeting a lot of new people isn't a priority. I got a reservation through EHS within twenty-four hours, which was great since I only had a few weeks before I arrived; but given my timing I had to pay the entire amount ($3,800 for ten weeks, including a dubious $250 "membership fee") up front with no chance for a refund. New York is an expensive place to live, but the grass is probably greener elsewhere. read more

I lived in the St. George for a semester, sadly the St. George is connected to the Clark St residence, which is basically a luxury mansion compared to the St. George, so living in the St. George is one giant disappointing tease. The rooms are okay, they're small, but they have decent bathrooms. My biggest complaint is the cockroaches, they are the size of your fist and they're not afraid of you, or the light. They are ALWAYS chilling out on your toothpaste or toothbrush, it's disgusting. There was also a huge bed bug epidemic and they stopped letting us use vacuums so all the rooms got disgusting. Not bad for a dorm, it's right on top of the 2 and 3 stop, and literally a block away from about 10 others, so you're pretty well connected. read more

I realize I have 1 posting, but the individual who wrote the GREAT review also has one posting? Hmmm? In addition, it smells, and has a serious bug problem. Never mind the cockroaches in the laundry room...there was a time shortly after I did my laundry when I noticed some of my clothes had a ton of tiny holes in them. I soon found that there silverfish in the room, which chewed the holes in my clothes. When I informed the staff of this problem, they told me that I needed to do a better job of cleaning my room. There is no amount of cleaning that can get rid of bugs like that. An exterminator needs to be called, but unfortunately, they would not do this for me and blamed me for the problem. Also, need to use wi-fi for a paper? Forget about it. Ethernet, they told me to share one port for three people in a room. To top this all off, my boyfriend planned on coming from Barcelona for a week to stay with me while I stayed here for my internship. After his flight arrived after 12pm, they wouldn't even allow him in the building so we had to get a hotel room for the night because apparently you can't sign in a guest after 9 without having an overnight pass on file, which you have to pay $5 for. They then informed me the next day that since he was staying for a week, it was an extra $20 per night after the third night. Seriously? I work two jobs to put myself through school and already had to shell out $4,000 of the money I worked hard for to stay for my internship. This place clearly tries to take advantage of interns and students and take money from them in any way they can. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Have a nice day! read more

This company takes advantage of those in need of a cheap place to stay. $1000/month in Midtown Manhattan sounds too good to be true until you take a look at what you're getting. For this amount of money, you can get room in the Vanderbilt YMCA (the company doesn't bother to tell you that the "Eastside Residence" is a YMCA, the people I spoke to didn't know this until they got there) that fits only a captain style twin XL size bed (which has 6 decent sized drawers in it, one of mine broke), a tiny desk and chair (if you have the desk and chair next to the bed, you'll have only enough space to squeeze by and no room to open the drawers). From the end of my twin XL bed, I could touch the opposite wall. There was no closet, only a wire rack. I almost forgot to mention that the walls are the most dismal grey/brown you could possibly imagine. Even though I requested to have a room closer to the bathroom, I had to walk down 3 hallways just to get to the bathroom (especially annoying at night). The shower stalls were not cleaned as often as they should and always had clumps of hair in the drain. In addition to the poor living situation, the walls must have been really thin because everything going on in every room could be heard, especially from the hallway. I had the unfortunate experience of being sandwiched between a girl who sang along to The Little Mermaid soundtrack at the top of her voice every night and a nymphomaniac. If you want to have your blinds open at night with the light on, it is definite that some perv from the building next door will be looking down at you. The only benefit was, unfortunately, this is the only way to live without roommates for this amount of money in Manhattan. --------------------------------------------------- I decided to give the company another chance, by moving into the slightly more expensive St. George Hotel in Brooklyn Heights. I tried another single because previous experiences with roommates were traumatic. For $1250/month I had a much larger room, a lovely view of the brooklyn bridge and part of the NY skyline, a closet and a bathroom. The room was a mess when I moved in, but with a lot of cleaning and some decorating (which was not possibly in former room, aside from posters) the place actually looked decent. The toilet was very cracked, but that was the only real problem with the first room. I signed up for a year (and moved in in may), but before summer, they made me switch to a smaller room because the first floor was for pace students... of course, the second floor was for pace students, as well and had a toilet that leaked constantly from the base which made a puddle on the floor. The first time I alerted maintenance, they said they didn't see it and left. The second time (after over a month had elapsed), they pulled the whole toilet up and fixed whatever the problem was. The room itself was fine, but the other residents were so loud and disrespectful that living there was hell. My neighbor felt the need to play "Mad World" every day at 3am. Many other The security guards were mostly very mean. One time I got locked out of my room and this old male security muttered, "son of a bitch" under his breath when I asked if he could let me back in. The front desk lady that's there in the morning smoked frequently and found, "What do you want?" to be an acceptable greeting. Although, the St. George was a HUGE improvement over the YMCA, it was still a huge ripoff. I'm currently living in a decent sized apt that's $1350/month. It ends up being a little more when you factor in cable and other expenses, but I have my boyfriend to share costs with. I really reccomend looking on Craig's List and trying to find a place with roommates or renting somewhere in Long Island City or a little further into Brooklyn because it's worth the time spent on the train to not have to be charged ridiculously for something utterly sub par. read more

This place is a DUMP! I had to live in their Midtown Manhattan location while interning because I couldn't find an apartment with a 6 month lease. When I moved in it looked like the room hadn't been cleaned at all, there were scuff marks all over the floor, brown stains in the sink, soap scum in the bathtub. Not only that, but the blinds on the window were broken and the bathroom door didn't even close! If thats not bad enough, when I came to check in, they had no record that I was even scheduled to arrive, and therefore couldn't put in a work order for all the broken things in my room because my room was "not found." They are extremely disorganized here and are more concerned with their OUTRAGEOUS guest and alcohol policy (I am 21 years old and have been living on my own for 4 years...I do not need these suckers telling me what to do) Do NOT live here...I didn't believe all the horrible reviews I read before I moved in but it is awful here. read more

The biggest waste of money. The entire place is gross. After one week living there, I realized the fridge was leaking freon and making all the food toxic. I've seen roaches all over the place, in the kitchen, stairs, and rooms. Also, after reading another review , I set up a camera in my room and watched as the RAs go in your room when you are away, and look through drawers. They are also extremely not accommodating. My neighbor across had a dog that would be barking throughout the night until I woke. I thought animals weren't allowed? So much more to add in but I can't even waste my breathe anymore. I am living at the St. George this semester in an exchange program from Tennessee. Overall, I have been pretty happy with the building. I wake up early and use the kitchen when it isn't busy, the gym is inches away, and the subway stop is inches away, too. There's grocery store, CVS, Starbucks, and restaurants extremely close by. Everything is so convenient to this location! I love being so close to the brooklyn bridge and the promenade. The room comes with a big fridge and TV. The RAs are amazing, and the security people are incredibly kind. If you are friendly to them, they will be friendly to you! However, the rooms are old. They are definitely small for three people--literally a hotel room. The elevators are constantly broken, and sometimes the kitchen sinks don't work. The conditions aren't ideal, but it's much more convenient that living in a tiny apartment for the same price. I can move out of here in December and don't have to worry about a lease or finding a subletter. I recommend this for temporary students! If you aren't a student, you probably won't really like the vibe. I couldn't live here forever, but I am 21 years old in New York City, and don't expect to live like a king just yet. read more

Short Review: Do not live here, you will regret it. Run as fast as you can from this company and its properties. The Details: I'm a grad student so I have four years of college life to compare my stay here to. Plain and simple this company is robbing students. For what I'm paying I could have a comparable studio- which arguably would be better because I'd have my own kitchen (more on this later). In addition to the money you pay to live here you pay (what I consider) outrageous additional fees for guests. Oh, and if you're into having guests forget it- their polices are super strict in order to gouge you for more money. But they only enforce policies that involve taking more money from students, if one of their "rules" doesn't involve a fee or a fine you can guarantee EHS will not enforce it. Underage drinking? As much as you want! Any hour of the day! Drugs? Go for it! There's no one to catch you! Which brings me to my next issue- there is ONE RA on duty for both buildings. Which means that girl scream-crying at her boyfriend at 2am is definitely going to be waking you up, multiple times in the night. I was in college once, I still love to party, but one RA to try to keep some form of order for 700 18-20 year olds is a joke. It's chaos here and not the fun kind. Structurally, this place sucks. The walls are thin. I can hear every word that the girl I share a wall with says to her mom on the phone, sometimes i can hear what her mom says too. When you try to take a shower with hot water the wall shakes violently like it's going to explode. Bugs come in through the AC. The kitchen- gagging- is filthy. Sinks are always clogged, it smells, faucets, burners, and ovens don't work. You'd think with all the money EHS is collecting from students they would at least be able to install a garbage disposal. My main problem with EHS is that they are all about sucking every last cent out of residents but don't put any money back into the building; and the staff doesn't care at all. The internet goes out at least twice a week- when I called to talk to someone about it they told me to go to Starbucks if it was such a big deal. I had a paper due and I PAY for internet- it's included in my tuition here- so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to receive what I pay for, or at least be told when someone will be looking into the problem. There is all this stuff that sucks about EHS from policies to infrastructure and the people that run this cash cow do not care at all so long as they keep getting paid. You will regret living here. You will have problems that go unanswered. You'll lose sleep the night before a big test or internet when a paper is due. The people that you share a wall with will know about every breath you take. When everything is said and done you will have paid a lot of money to be treated like shit. They will try to tell you about all the perks that come with living here (the gym!) but trust me it's not worth it. IT IS NOT WORTH IT. You will regret living here. read more

Way overpriced. You're better off finding a roommate on craigslist and living in a real apartment. I stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA (or Eastside Residence as they like to call it). This place should be avoided at all costs. Don't even get me started on that noisy radiator that prevented me from sleeping from November-April. The new place they just made on 3rd Ave and 97th street looks like it might be nicer than the others, but there is no reason to pay what they are asking for. I think it's like over $2000 a month for a single and a little less than $2000 a month for a double. The location isn't great. It's in Spanish Harlem and right across the street is a bunch of housing projects. I definitely wouldn't feel safe wandering around that area after dark. You could get a studio a few blocks down where it's safer and still pay less than what they're asking for. read more

The 1760 Third Avenue dorms are great. On the higher floors the view is amazing and the rooms are huge. The RAs and RDs are immensely helpful. At 10pm on a friday night I needed my windows fixed and I was helped immediately. The only issue as that because one of my roommates moved in early the floors weren't properly cleaned. I've been having a very pleasant experience with EHS, and disagree with some of the other reviews. I came to NYC for an internship over the summer (so my experience may be different than someone living here during the school year), and this was the most convenient short-term housing option I could find. I was a little nervous because the EHS website didn't show pictures of the rooms, and I read the other negative reviews listed here, but overall I'm happy with my decision. To start, the Brooklyn Heights area is very nice. There are lots of stores and shops within walking distance, restaurants and drycleaners right across the street, a park just up the street, and there's just a general feeling of comfort and relaxation. However, it's extremely easy to get to Manhattan - Wall Street (I'm interning in that area) is a five minute subway ride away (one stop), and the station here is literally right outside the EHS door. The room also includes membership at a great athletic club that's right next door. The building itself, as you can see from the website, is awesome. Everything is modern and recently renovated. There are quite a few common areas with pool tables and TVs, private study areas, a screening room, a mail room, and a really large/modern kitchen area that anyone can use. There are also ample washers and dryers in the basement (although it costs a few dollars per load). The staff has been friendly and helpful. The leasing agent provided all the information I requested, check-in went smoothly, and the student services desk has been able to answer any questions I've had. The staff also organizes events (e.g. mixers, kickball, tours), which is really nice when you don't really know anyone else in the city and want to relax for a bit after school/work. The room is better than I expected (and this was my main concern). I booked a large double (did get lucky with a great roommate), and there's plenty of room for two people. The furniture is obviously not the highest quality, but it's all in good condition (two each bed with drawers, desk, chair, and nightstand; one each TV stand, TV, fridge, and microwave). The room was pretty clean when I arrived - about as clean as you could expect. I gave it a good wipe down and hit the floors with a Swiffer, and I'm satisfied with the condition. The bathroom is much nicer than I thought it would be, and looks recently renovated/updated (there are signs that it was a rush job, like splattered paint, but it's still clean and modern). EHS is not a luxury hotel, but if you're realistic with what you expect for student/intern housing, it's a great option that is worth the money. read more

My friend had nowhere to go at 3 am and in an emergency situation I brought her to my apartment even tho we have a 'no guest policy' which is ridiculous in and of itself and was changed to be that way after I signed the lease already and had no way out. Not only did they coldly kick my friend out onto the street, the security stood there and watched as a sexual harasser came in off the street and harassed her for 5 whole minutes while I was on the phone with her in my room. I had to kick him out myself: a 22 year old girl. Their excuse? She was trespassing so it wasn't their responsibility. After we were kicked out we were stalked, chased, and nearly robbed. I explained the trauma that this no guest policy and their refusal to bend rules for safety reasons had on me and my friend, breaking down in literal tears, to the managing director of student life (Brendan Mulroney) and his response was legitimately 'if security called me at 3 am and told me the situation i still would have kicked her out.' and It was my choice to go with her so not their responsibility. The absolute coldness and lack of empathy that was used in this situation is unreal and disgusting. DO NOT STAY HERE. If you care about women. If you care about the trauma that me and my friend endured because of st George. Do not trap yourself into a lease with them. read more

I stayed at the St. George residence for about 6 weeks this past summer while working an internship in Manhattan. Before moving in, I'd read some of the reviews on Yelp and some of them terrified me. Upon move in, I was pleasantly surprised at just how good this residence was and think that a lot of the reviews here are misrepresentative of the St. George experience (or at least my St. George experience). In terms of location, I don't think you can get any better. Brooklyn Heights is a gorgeous place to live, there's plenty of places to go/eat nearby and besides that it's just one subway stop from Manhattan. That's not to mention the fact that there's a subway station practically inside the building itself which is unbelievably convenient. It's Brooklyn, so it's going to take a bit longer to get to some of the upper parts of Manhattan (maybe a half hour to the Upper East Side, for example) but that's still an incredibly reasonable travel time for New York. The facilities are also really great for student housing. The security is round-the-clock, which makes the building feel very safe. The room and bathroom are pretty clean and roomy, and the room comes with a giant fridge and microwave which is really convenient. The rooms in the Wellers tower (where I stayed) are definitely a littler smaller than the rooms on the other side of the building, but I didn't find this to be a huge issue. The kitchen downstairs is also clean and works well, I really enjoyed cooking in it. The staff was also extremely helpful. My roommate and I noticed a problem with our fridge/shower while we were staying there, but received almost immediate resolution of both problems as soon as we called the help desk. The only issue I really had with St. George (other than the price, which is truthfully pretty overcharged but it's New York so that's pretty expected) was their roommate policy/move in information services. I received absolutely no information about my roommate (including her name) until moving into my room (and only then because she happened to be in the room when I moved in, otherwise they couldn't give me any of her information at all) which was obviously pretty nerve-wracking. Since I know other dorms are able to provide this kind of information beforehand, I'm not sure why St. George has such a confidential policy, and I really think that should be changed. Overall it's a really nice dorm. Ridiculously overpriced, but if you can afford it it's a great option. read more

My daughter lives there as she's in her first year at University. She LOVES it & couldn't speak more highly of all of the staff. I had a great experience living here this summer. I lived in a single and everything worked properly. The location is incredible -- views of lower Manhattan, shops and restaurants and a subway line are just a short walk away. The staff was very attentive and took care of all questions and concerns! 2.5 star rating. I had a similar experience to the other reviewers on yelp. I usually don't write reviews, but I thought I'd give a heads up for people thinking about living here, especially because there is a significant difference between what EHS advertises and what you actually get. I chose to stay with EHS during the summer for an internship in NY because I didn't have time during the school semester to go looking for a summer sublet. As a non-NY college student, choosing EHS eliminated that hassle. Overall, for the price it could be much better, and I'm sure with a bit more effort you could find a better deal elsewhere. Some things I want to bring attention to: 1. Despite the attractive-looking website, the pictures are all from the newly renovated St. George Residence, so unless you'll be living there, don't rely on those pictures. 2. I do not recommend the New Yorker residence. The rooms/hallways/kitchen are gross and will make you sad :( BUT they do have some large rooms. And I'm assuming the same for the other residences, so I'd recommend getting a tour of the available rooms before signing up so you don't get stuck with a tiny room. The St. George Residence: - Very nice lobby, but not the same for the rooms if you live in a regular single/double. - Big (and only) communal kitchen that gets pretty crowded - I didn't know that EHS reserves space for students attending certain colleges who make up the majority of the residences. Needless to say, that comes with its ups and downs, depending on whether you're also a student there and know ppl there. - There are cockroaches. But then again, that's supposed to be a common occurrence in NY, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Pros: Security, nice lobby, T.V. + cable, microwave, fridge, and bathroom in room, (if you live in St. George) the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood is really nice, convenient: grocery stores with student discount, starbucks nearby, gym and subway next door. Cons: Small, kind of gross rooms (if you're in a regular. Deluxe I'm assuming are the nice looking rooms as seen on the website), ugly hallway, small bathroom, questionable A.C., strange and uncomfortable chairs, unattractive linoleum floors, general dorm-y-ness, pests, weird guest policies, not so great room condition, and the costliness. I've managed to deal with the cons by decorating my room and placing a ton of work orders. In conclusion, I'd choose this place if you don't have the time/resources to find a temporary apartment and don't mind living in a very college dorm situation. read more

I must be having a very different experience than Haley P. I live at the Cathedral Garden residence on the UWS and it's fabulous. The apartments are generally rented out to Barnard faculty and grad students. New hardwood floors, new furniture, new bathrooms, new kitchens. Lounge on the tenth floor with a nice view and a plasma tv. Each room has its own regular tv, plus basic cable. Air conditioning. My only complaint is the guest policy and the mean doormen, but whatever. Oh, and it's a tad bit expensive, but it's way easier and safer than getting a random sublet. I guess that's three complaints. But I still give it four stars. read more

I lived in this location for my last semester, the facility itself is located conveniently in a very clean, safe neighborhood within a walking distance to Brooklyn Bridge and parks. Management team is very helpful and responsive with any problems you might encounter. Rooms, hallways, kitchen and bathrooms are always kept clean. I'll start with the positives: the room is a good size, and it has an apartment-sized fridge and a microwave. The location is great too. You're right by the Brooklyn Bridge and several subway lines, and it's much quieter than Manhattan. All the negatives, though? The bathroom has cosmetic updates but isn't that great. The tub is horribly stained, and there isn't a fan to draw out the moisture after you shower. You have to go down numerous floors to a communal kitchen that is usually filthy (I've seen the cleaning staff in the morning leaving the sinks running for ages, eating breakfast, and chatting instead of cleaning), and it's always full, often with loud people who aren't even cooking. Like, maybe one person in a group of 4-7 is cooking, but the rest are just standing around and talking or studying. There's other parts of the dorm for studying. Other cons: the dorm staff is incredibly slow to check in mail, and you literally have to pay for guests to stay with you. If my best friend has flown in from out of town, neither of us should have to pay more money just for her to sleep on my floor. Oh and maintenance says they've fixed problems but half the time, they really haven't. The only reason I'm still living here is because I can't afford an apartment. read more

The rooms aren't that great (which I'd consider 3 stars), but it's also connected to the Clark Residence which has 5 star rooms (so 4 star average all for an exorbitant price natch)! I have been staying at the St. George Residence for a full semester now, and I have really enjoyed it. Free Wifi, rooms come with fridge, microwave, and TV, there is a nice big community kitchen, several quiet study rooms (space can get limited but if you wait you can usually find a seat), and a very kind staff that runs the place. The security is great, and I have never not felt safe here. The location is amazing considering the 2,3 subway is next door and you are one stop away from Manhattan. You also get full access to a gym two doors down, Vineapple (a nice coffee shop to study at) is one street away, you are directly across from two grocery stores, and the beautiful promenade and Manhattan skyline is just behind the building. Honestly I could not have asked for a better first place to live in New York. As a couple of people have said before, it's an old hotel and stuff breaks every once in a while. Also you need to consider that you are living in a hotel room with two other people, so space will be tight. But for all the perks that come with living here I really don't mind the lack of space. Overall, great place to stay for the young student in New York. I am 22 and sometimes feel like I'm living in freshman aged dorm again which can get annoying, but a small price to pay for the wonderful location. read more

Nice sized rooms, great amenities, commercial kitchen, clean building. An million + dollar renovation has made this dorm one of the best (if not the best) dorms in NYC. The St. George has its fair share of problems, as many reviewers have shared, but it's also a fantastic residence. First of all, the price: the dorm is expensive, but if you look at all the accommodations and amenities you get when you live right next to the Brooklyn Bridge, the price is reasonable. The dorm offers amenities such as two lounges with pool table, a kitchen (that gets dirty, just like any kitchen, but is cleaned throughout the day and thoroughly at night), a cafeteria, premium cable television, wi-fi, and abundance of study rooms, and even a screening room. Maintenance issues in the St. George are something that comes with any old building, especially one that is as old as the historic St. George hotel, however, maintenance is there for repairs 24 hours a day. In addition, there are RA's that are available for any needs, at any time of day, any day - including noisy neighbors. The dorm is directly above the 2 and 3 trains, just one stop away from Wall Street/Manhattan; a couple blocks away from the N, R, 4, 5, and 6 I believe; and around the corner from the A and C trains. There is a 24 hour grocery store across the street, there is a 24 hour deli as well, and right between them is a Gristedes. There are also tons of restaurants and shops in the area and many of which offer discounts to residents. The gym here is absolutely beautiful, it comes with every machine you can imagine, free weights, a salt water pool, a hot tub, and a sauna! To top it all off, you don't get this view anywhere else: you're a short walk away from the Brooklyn Promenade and Brooklyn Bridge Park which has some of the most breath-taking views in the city. Some rooms even have the most beautiful views (a couple of my old rooms had a view of all of Manhattan: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, the Freedom Tower, the Empire State Building, and the Chrysler Building way in the back. When it comes to a dorm room, you're getting the bang for your buck by simply having your own in-room bathroom! P.S. Saw something about the guest prices, to have a guest during the day, there is no charge. If you want a guest to spend the night, it is $5 and this is only to ensure that people are not living in the building when they're not paying (yes, that happens). - Current Resident (3 years) read more

I as well did not believe the reviews that people had said about EHS and I should have. I stayed in the Midtown Manhattan location as well and the rooms are very small! Especially when you have to share it with two other people. You also have to share a kitchen with the entire floor which is about 100 other people. When I lived there the kitchen sink was broken for two weeks. The money you pay for this place is not worth it, sublet from something on craigslist, trust me! read more

The WiFi situation is terrible; it cuts in and out at random times. Water pressure in the shower is hit or miss (and hot water is not a given) and in the sink you can generally expect ice-cold or scalding hot. When I moved in my main overhead light was out and the TV didn't work; they did eventually come to replace the light (and I don't really care about the TV, but still points off for having it not work upon move-in). I'm only leaving this place with two stars over one because the staff I've interacted with seems ok, but at the end of the day I'd say avoid this place if at all possible. read more

I was living at the St George from late August 2014 to mid-December of that year while attending Pace University. The St George is operated by EHS (Educational Housing Services) but I guess Pace had a deal with them cause several floors of the Henry Street wing, where I lived, were reserved for Pace students. I wrote a lot so for those who want a precise description, read the whole thing, otherwise this is a quick list of pros and cons: Pros: - close to Pace - community of students - location in Brooklyn Heights, and surroundings - kitchen, laundry and really nice gym - safe (don't know if I really care about that one) Cons: - too much rules and restrictions - rooms too small - WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!! Location: As a Pace student, living in Brooklyn Heights was very, very convenient. The St George has the 2 and 3 train running right under it (Clark Street station) which goes to Pace (Fulton Street station) in 5 minutes. The A and C train also stop a few hundred meters away which is quite useful if the 2 and 3 trains aren't running (which has happened a few times). Moreover, the neighborhood is really nice. Brooklyn Heights is probably one of the most cosy places in the city, it is calm and for a student it can be a little TOO calm, but at least your not being tempted and can have your head to your work. The St George is within 10 minutes of the Brooklyn Bridge Park which has basketball fields, soccer fields and more. It is also close to Grimaldi's, a pizza place under the Brooklyn Bridge that is just awesome. Building and Rooms: The Building itself is an old hotel that was transformed to house students. There is a lobby and basically the whole first floor is common space with pool tables, TVs, and a good kitchen. The basement has a laundry room with about 15 machines, and you usually don't have to wait (they are not free). Many of my clothes got stained however, somebody must've been using bleach and the machines were not rinsed out... If you are concerned about safety the building has two entrances where you must swipe your badge to get in. There are a good amount of security guards on the first floor and you occasionally see one in the upper floors. Actually this is kind of annoying because you can't just invite friends: there is a whole process of registering them, they have to have there picture taken, and then are given a guest pass for which you are charged $20 if they forget to return it to the front desk. And you can sign in anybody from 2am to 9am... As a young adult going out on weekends this can be kind of a problem. The rooms are basically hotel-size rooms (Henry side, I never saw the Clark side which I was told is better). I shared a room with one roommate but he came in a month and a half late, so for the first part of the semester I had the room for myself. The bed was ok. Storage was ok, but kind of limited, especially for school stuff (the desk was tiny and kind of shitty). For the first part of the semester the living conditions were fine, but it changed when my roommate arrived. The rooms are really not sized for two people, you have no privacy, no noise or light barrier, and it just feels too small. This created problems for example when my roommate would get up at 7am and make a little noise which would wake me up, but I did not have to go to class until 11 so my sleep was fucked up. Same when i wanted to go to bed and he wanted to watch TV, and so on. I guess it could have been different if I was living with a good friend rather than just a random roommate, but given the price I was paying this was bullshit! Price: You can probably find out the price on EHS's website and it also probably varies from school to school, but i paid $7450 for one semester. And by one semester they don't mean from mid August to early January, they mean form August 31st to December 20th That's $7450 for 15 weeks, or $496/week, or $1986/month!!! This is a price of a decent or really nice one bedroom apartment in almost any area of the city. In fact, when I moved out, the living options I was considering were one bedroom apartments in Bushwick, Crown Heights, and even in the Lower East Side which rarely exceeded $1800 for a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom, all that for just myself. I am now sharing such an apartment with a friend and am paying $550/month for my share of the rent. Sure I am a little farther from Pace, but the living conditions are much better and it is almost 4 times cheaper. There is much more I could say but I think this sums it up alright. In the end i would say my stay at the St George was a good experience because of how convenient it was and of the good friends i made there. However the cost and the high amount of rules made it so that it was impossible for me to consider spending any more time over there. read more

EHS is only a money-maker for whoever the hell created it. They don't care about their residents, they're cheap, and the staff is rude and condescending. I currently reside in the Brooklyn Heights Clark residence. I am a college student, and was in my last semester in Ohio, finishing finals, and just couldn't afford the time or energy to look for an actual apartment to sublet in NYC for the summer, so I chose EHS because they gave me the impression that it was a vast wonderland, a mecca in the middle of the city. That couldn't be further from the truth. I paid $5000 to stay here for the summer, and an extra $700 to move in two weeks early. Let's discuss the MANY issues I've had since I've arrived: 1) When I came to check in (which I gave MONTHS notice of my date), I was given a key to a room which was completely FILTHY. There were dirty clothes all over the floor, empty food containers, etc. So, I had to go back to the front desk, wait 20 minutes for the RA to come back downstairs, until he finally told me that there were no rooms available, and I'd have to stay in the Henry St. residence. So, I had to drag all my belongings to the opposite side of the building, which was even more disgusting and dilapidated than the Clark side. Once I rode the creeky elevator to my floor, I was thrown in a room with NO light, cement floors, and no shower curtain (among other things). I felt like I was in a mental hospital room. 2) Finally, after 4 days, I had to lug all my stuff BACK to the Clark side to my permanent room. Upon entering, I found that my TV hadn't been hooked up yet. So I kindly went downstairs to ask them to connect it for me. Well, long story short, it took at least 7 trips downstairs and 2 or 3 work orders (and 4 DAYS!) before they came to do it. And that was only before I went downstairs FUMING with anger. 3) When I made my reservation, there were no single rooms available, and I made it clear to the staff that I have a severe anxiety disorder, and it would be very difficult for me to live in a bedroom with another person. I offered to provide medical documentation, but they couldn't care less. The resident director came up, with a snobby sarcastic attitude, to inform me that "we are totally booked up, you will most definitely have a roommate" (How convenient that this happened 10 minutes after I was angry at them about my TV) 4) So, eventually my roommate moves in after having lived here 2 weeks. I had no notice of when she would be here, what she was like, how old she was, etc. She just...showed up one day. Then, a week later, she found that a friend of hers was living in a large double room with no roommate (*gasp*! how convenient, because I thought that they were COMPLETELY BOOKED UP!?!?) However, I was happy because now I could relax in my own room, and slack off of my anxiety medication. 5) Then, about a week later, at 8:30 in the morning, when I'm in the middle of getting ready for my internship, in my underwear, a new girl just WALKS right in. Fantastic, right?! They didn't let me know someone was coming, when they were coming, or anything. The girl is very sweet, don't get me wrong, but I was angry to say the least. I had to go down to the front desk and get the e-mail address for a supervisor (who I STILL haven't heard back from yet!). 6) Other than these problems, there have been multiple maintenance issues: The cable has gone out 3 times since I've been here (in a month), The air conditioning has gone out twice (once on the really hot 100 degree day), The dryers were broken in the laundry room, There was no hot water at one point, The pipe under my sink was leaking so bad it completely fell apart, There have been horrible smells coming from my vents.....I could go on and on. TRUST ME: If you're looking for a convenient place to stay in New York for the summer, find somewhere else. I lost over $5,000 to this DUMP, and I really hope that nobody else finds themselves in the same situation. The place is filthy, maintenance is lazy, everything is cheap, and the staff is TERRIBLY RUDE. Please, take my advice. Don't stay here! read more
