This is how I was able to finally get out to the AIDS Fund monthly gay bingo at the Gershman Y. Fellow Yelp Elite (and a great partner-in-crime) Dee M and I are at another bingo game back in March (Aston library) and realize we both wanted to go. Yay! Gay Bingo is very popular, so much do that if you want a reserved floor seat you're going to be buying 4-6 weeks in advance. The building itself is definitely older - I'd guess 1910-1920s. It's somewhat ornate and well kept up. Bingo is in their auditorium on the third & 4th floors - 4th floor being the balcony seats. For hardcore bingo players: this is not your serious game. It's entertainment with bingo games thrown in. The BVDs - Bingo Verifying Divas- are magnificent. Sassy, funny, dirty in the double -entendre fashion. In other words, awesome drag queens. There's a little bit of singing, dancing, a game show, and time to learn about each game's sponsor, like what the AIDS legal fund does. They have done food & drinks for sake, a 50/50 raffle, drawings, etc. You can also bring your own food & non-alcoholic drinks. Some folks had pretty elaborate meals and more than a couple cakes. This is most definitely a fundraiser with everyone involved working as volunteers- even the BVDs and ASL interpreters. Dee and I had a great time. I'm looking forward to going again during their fall season (they don't run games in the summer). If you love drag queens, want to support a worthy nonprofit and like bingo, you should definitely go!

But since that time I found out that the Y provides a number of eclectic artistic and cultural events, whether they're predominately Jewish or not. Along with its annual palooza the Y hosts the Philadelphia Jewish Music Festival, and the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival. But through its many corridors you might come across art displays, interesting lectures, theater productions and more. And when I attended a special screening of Ken Roach's latest, The Angel's Share (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1924394/), I learned that it's where the Philadelphia Film Society hosts a number of their advance screenings.

They did a really amazing job hosting my daughter's birthday party yesterday! Birthday parties at…read moremost event spaces are insanely expensive, but this was fairly reasonable for 12 kids. The kids loved painting their own figurines and the staff made sure they were ready to take home the same day (it's nice that you don't have to return weeks later to pick up your item). They also let me bring in my own food/snacks and I was allowed to decorate the room, too. My daughter had a blast. We've been here before just for drop in painting and we will happily be back to support them!

I've been to the Witches Ball twice now -- once on a date-date (last year) and once on a…read morefriend-date (this year). If you're on a date, you'll probably want to make a reservation at the spooky Robin's Nest Restaurant at the opening of the outdoor festival, before meandering through the creepy, dark streets brimming with interesting characters. If you're on a friend date, you may want to avoid the intimate restaurant and head straight to the beer garden, the creepy teddy bear shop, or the ghost hunter store. Or, of course, the VooDoo Bar. Like the others have said, do NOT bring your kids here. You're ruining it for everyone when you do that crap. Two downfalls (aside from the kid infestation) of the event: -Lack of bathrooms -Lack of food vendors I stood in a line for some beautiful porta potties for what felt like a really-really long time. The guy behind me in line kept drunkenly yelling at the people in the stalls... as if they really wanted to take their time and enjoy themselves in there or something. After finally relieving myself, I then spent an absurd amount of time waiting for some chicken tenders. Get some more food vendors and bathroom options, Witches Ball, and you're golden. See you next year!

There are crafters, vendors, food, and definitely plenty of drinks. The cornerstone of this event in my opinion is the costume contest. People go all out for this and it's really a sight to see! Every year it seems to attract more and more visitors. For this reason, I hope they get better at accommodating more visitors as it took an inordinate amount of time this year to get a drink. But it is still a blast and shouldn't be missed by the Halloween enthusiasts in the greater Philadelphia area!

I was able to schedule out the whole place. The girls got canvases and tshirts and lots of paint. Bluetooth speaker set up for dancing, singing and painting. I had them bring a change of vlothes but the ponchos and shoe covers the paintground gave me kept most paint off everything but faces and hands. Please Note that I WANTED the girls to be able to throw paint at eachother. Some wanted paint on their faces and some did not and they accommodated them all. We got Donuts and Popcorn from the Popperia next door and it was Perfect. Thank you to Brandy and her staff for a wonderful experience.
