The first time, our group of four sat outside in the courtyard, which was so cute and had a great atmosphere. Their mezcal selection is incredible--everything from Espadín to Tobalá to Madrecuishe. We were so excited to see mezcal from one of our favorite places in Oaxaca on the menu! The server was super fun and kept the good vibes going the whole night. We ended up staying for two hours (and even canceled our dinner reservation somewhere else) because we were having such a great time. The food was amazing--we shared tamales and chicharrón, which paired perfectly with the mezcal. The courtyard was amazing, the music was awesome and it was just such a fun scene. A few days later, we went back and sat inside, which was just as great. We ended up chatting with the table next to us and loved being able to try so many different mezcals while learning about each one. That's what I love most about a good mezcalería--the chance to taste, learn, and truly enjoy the experience. La Miserable has everything: a killer mezcal selection, a welcoming vibe, and great food. They make as many of their syrups and bitters as they can, so the cocktails are fresh and flavorful. They have a great classic cocktail menu for you to look at, but they have some specialty drinks as well. The bartender was making their jamaica (hibiscus) concentrate when we were there. I asked what he made with that, and a mezcal jamaicita was what he said. Of course had to try it! It was maybe a little sweet for me, but still tasty and unique. We haven't tried the food, but love the vibe and of course the dog that wants all the attention. If you are looking for good cocktails, definitely make this a stop!

They also have a full bar, and the prices were very reasonable. The servers were very friendly and efficient, which made the experience even better. Only minor issue was the smoke detector that continued to beep inside indicating the battery needed to be changed. We actually returned a few days later, and the beeping continued. It was kind of annoying. Other than that Rancho Viejo was excellent.

They let you valet for free if you eat at the restaurant. I ordered the grilled octopus with chorizo and pesto and I really enjoyed it. Lots of flavor and a good combination of things. You get 2 tentacles. My partner got the catch of the day with black beans and garlic sauce and an avocado and tomatillo salad. The fish today was amber jack. His dish was a little sour and not as much flavor but he still liked it. He also got a Chardonnay. There were only 2 types of whites to choose from by the glass and they were Mexican wines. The wine was different because it tasted like someone put a splash of port in it but it did go well with the fish. We also got the strawberry dessert. Strawberries with cream and strawberry ice cream. It was tasty and a nice way to end the meal. The service was good and friendly.
