Rancho Viejo, established in 1994, was fantastic. It's located a block from the beach and Malecon on an elevated street just before you get into the heart of the city. Both indoor and interior seating is available. From outside, there is a view of the Marina and a sliver of ocean. Rancho Viejo is apparently known for their meats; most of which is prepared outdoors. As such, we ordered the carne asada and pastor mocajete. Both meats were delicious, and the portion was more than enough for the two of us. They also have a full bar, and the prices were very reasonable. The servers were very friendly and efficient, which made the experience even better. Only minor issue was the smoke detector that continued to beep inside indicating the battery needed to be changed. We actually returned a few days later, and the beeping continued. It was kind of annoying. Other than that Rancho Viejo was excellent. read more

I hate leaving one star reviews but nothing went right for us at this restaurant. We were seated right away and ordered tacos and 2 margaritas. After about 25 minutes of waiting and not having anything we ordered come out or be checked on by our server, we had decided to find our server and see how much longer. This became a difficult because they did not know English and tried communicating through a translator app. She then said our food would be out in 5 minutes so we decided to wait. About 5 minutes later we got chips and dip, our margaritas and then a minute or two later, our tacos. The tacos were good but not the best tacos we've had. Last time here a year ago great tacos! don't know what happened! The bbq chicken was a flat piece of chicken with no bbq flavor slathered in bbq sauce. My fajitas were stewed chicken with veggies and bacon! Soggy and with no flavor. Wait time to get our food was very long with waiters just standing around. Location: On a side street on the outside edge of central La Paz downtown. We were staying at Costa Baja Resort and it was a US$4 Uber ride to here. Atmosphere: Outside patio or inside. Many large tables, good for large groups. Mostly locals eat here. Food: Known for their beef items. We got steak on a hot plate, ribs, Asada tacos, Baja fish tacos. All very good. As a gringo lost (voluntarily) in the culinary jungle of La Paz, I stumbled into Rancho Viejo-- And let me tell you... Rancho Viejo delivers. The papa rellena? A fried, cheese-stuffed potato miracle that made me rethink every potato I've ever had in the U.S. (sorry Idaho, you've been demoted). The breakfast? Eggs so perfectly cooked I considered proposing. There's something oddly comforting about being surrounded by retirees in Tommy Bahama shirts who call the waitress "amiga" with a questionable accent. It's like a resort buffet fell in love with a legit Mexican kitchen and decided to raise snowbirds together. Would I come back? Absolutely. Woah! Just excellent! If you're staying at Paraiso del Mar, Rancho Viejo is a five minutes walk from the dock after getting off the ferry. This used to be one of the best eateries in La Paz( lived in area since 2006 ), but after years of expansion sadly it is now ok at best. Prices have doubled or more and food is just not that good any more. I've pretty much stopped eating here for the last 5 years or so, but todays meal will be my last. We are local for about half the year. Our friends visit us and always want to go to Rancho Viejo. It's a really good way to feel a large family. The food is good. You can order a kilo of meat for there or to go, and it comes with all the fixings and tortillas. I've always liked the service and late night hours. Their breakfast is also good. We first came to Ranchi Viejo 2003 or 2004 when it was a small simple place with some rough tables under awnings and a cook preparing arrachera on a grill by the side of the street. Today they have a nice building and shady patios, but the chef still grills by the side of the road. We dropped by for lunch and had no difficulty scoring a shady outside table. Although their menu now runs to several pages, we went old school and had a half order of arrachera to eat in. A half order is plenty for two normal appetites. Of course we ordered it with flour tortillas, which are a speciality of the Baja and nothing like the thick doughy dreck of regular store bought tortillas. The meat and all the fixings are served on old style rough pottery complete with chips and cracks. A small bowl of tortilla chips, a salsa fresca and a dark salsa redolent with oregano, pickled onions, shreaded cabbage, avocado salsa, grilled peppers, lime wedges, a basket of tortillas, and finally cucumber slices make up the supporting cast. A platter with chopped arrachera completes the picture. The chopped arrachera is well marinated and just slightly salty. The pickled onions have a nice bite and oregano flavor. A delicious meal with a nice variety of tastes and textures. Well worth a stop if you are in the area. It is just up from the marina district and only a couple of blocks from the north end of the Malecon. Oh, and dogs are welcome at the outside tables, though smokers are not! Arrachera is still available packed to go (para levar) if you want to take it with you. read more

I remember this place being better. Visited about 3 yrs ago. Its a 24 hr restaurant so I guess you could compare it to a Dennys. Maybe its what I ordered but it could have been much better. LOVE THIS PLACE. Of all the places we ate this was my favorite. We sat streetside, at night, and just enjoyed the scenery and night life. I ordered the chile rellenos and a glass of petit syrah (which oddly came chilled). After about 10 minutes though the flavors of the wine opened up and it went really well with my meal. My rellenos were just packed with freshness and flavor. I'm a sucker for nighshades so naturally I love chile rellenos more than life. These were your traditional rellenos in tomato sauce, stuffed with cheese and cooked just perfectly. The additional rice, beans, and tortilla all made this one of the most perfect meals I've ever eaten. Not to mention the service is that typical Mexican hospitality... Sooooo nice, and everyone taking such pride in their work, their food, and themselves. All this special care and integrity shows itself in the food. My husband is Mexican and a chef back home in the US and he says he "makes everything with love." They do that here, and it makes for the most memorable taste and dining experience.
