This is a great community theatre! It's a Vaudeville-era playhouse, but it's been renovated and is in great condition. The management gets terrific Northern California talent, but the venue is also rented frequently to local area public and private schools for graduation ceremonies. I have recently seen both the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra (performing with the San Ramon Valley Chorale) and ZZ Tush -- a ZZ Top tribute band. Both were excellent performances. I've attended a couple of shows there the top shelf classic show during the holidays, which was impeccable AND attribute to Dion Warwick it was good. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to going again. I'm mourning the loss of this once great theatre. A group of us went all year long, for years, to see amazing, fun concerts. However, since the old manager left, we no longer get newsletters or information of any kind. Thus, we're never aware of what's coming unless we go to the website. The house used to be packed for every performance. No longer & it's so sad. Performances are canceled due to low ticket sales. Bus loads of people used to arrive & we filled the seats. New Management is desperately needed. Or the current one needs to up his game. I took a chance & bought tickets to a show that should be awesome. So few seats had been sold, I'm expecting to be refunded my ticket price once again. Someone please HELP SAVE this beautiful place. read more

It's a beautiful art deco theatre that reminds me of the Paramount in Oakland, but smaller. The place feels intimate and small town. The surrounding area is right by the marina with excellent restaurants. read more

I couldn't believe that this great Antioch establishment was missing from Yelp! This theatre has been around since 1928 for heaven's sake! Instantly, I knew I had to add it. This theatre, like many other Antioch establishments, dates back to my childhood. I remember when I was taking ballet lessons at the Delta Ballet Academy (http://www.yelp.com/biz/delta-ballet-academy-antioch), we would usually have our recitals in the Antioch Community Center. But once, only once, when my teacher announced we were having a performance here that was open to the public, my heart leaped! I was about 8 or 9. I knew this was a big deal, and my excitement to perform at a bigger venue foreshadowed my current passion to perform on stage. Over the years, El Camp has seen its fair shares of rough times when they were forced to shut down due to financial reasons. But after a major restoration project in 2003, business (non-profit to boot) has been booming since! I've seen numerous movies here including To Kill a Mockingbird and It's a Wonderful Life (my dad's all time fav). I've also seen numerous performances here including world renowned Hawaiian slack key guitarist Keola Beamer. Other notable performers who have performed at the El Campanil: The Three Stooges Debbie Reynolds Roy Rogers with his horse Trigger Sally Rand - Fan Dancer Usherettes Edgar Bergen Donald O'Connor Ted Lewis Al Jolson Gene Autry The Limeliters I'm thankful this place is around for people to enjoy. The El Campanil Theatre is a Jewel in Antioch. My husband and I attend several venues a year. One of our favorites is the Benefit for the Delta Blues Festival. Not since the late sixties/early 70s when I would go to the Fillmore West in San Francisco, have I enjoyed going to concerts as much. The staff is very friendly, the acts superb and the atmosphere wonderful! The meets and greets with the performers makes it an equally special experience. We have also brought our granddaughter to the Nutcracker and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Meeting the ballet group after the before and after the show and having her picture taken with them was a real treat for her. We are fortunate to have a place so close to come to and enjoy! Such a beautiful theatre..it's really too bad because you book this venue to have a great time and enjoy your event, and then the usher goes out of his way to be extremely rude. At one point I was showing my sister where to sit because the place was packed and my family saved her a seat. The usher stood in front of me and tried to block me with his arms, he told me that I'm not an usher and they can find a seat..WHAT?! I'm sorry but my family is going to sit together. Mind you, he gave me major attitude the second I walked into the building and then this? Then in the middle of our ceremony he tells someone to turn their flash off, nearly yelling at them, it was so distracting when he could have just politely asked them to turn it off. Again, it's a major bummer because the place looks so beautiful when you book it, but I would never recommend this place to anyone. Fair warning.. read more

Here is a five star formula. Renovate an iconic theater in a charming delta town, attract top notch entertainment, run the operation with dedicated volunteers (it is a 501(c)3 group), and maintain the premises spotlessly. We went to see Franc D'Ambrosio of Phantom of the Opera fame, the acoustics were marvelous, the staff friendly, the sound system really good. This is much better than going to San Francisco with the inflated prices, atrocious parking, and rude people. We plan to return. read more

The theater itself is beautiful. Unfortunately the beauty can't fix the attitudes and extreme rudeness of the ushers and people who run this place. I've gone there for three years and every year the service is just a little worse. It's truly unfortunate that such a beautiful location is run by people that don't know the meaning of treating people well. As a person who manages a staff of over 40 people I teach my staff that they should treat each client as a guest in their home, I most certainly wasn't treated that way here. Instead I felt like a person who was inconveniencing them. It's really to bad. Performers, Theater Companies and all beware. read more

My wife & I have enjoyed three concerts here. The place is beautiful, the facilities are clean and staff super friendly.

The first show we saw here in this beautiful venue was the Eagles tribute band. Really good-- a few weeks ago, Almost Elton John was also very enjoyable. The guy sitting next to me had on a pair of crazy Elton glasses to complete the evening! read more

I love coming to the El Campanil Theatre. I like that fact that it is local. They show classic movies and foreign films. The concerts are top notch! I enjoy coming here to see my favorite tribute bands time and time again! Tickets are very affordable too. I savor the casual meet and greets with the performers after the show! I can't do that with larger venues! The merchandise table is a welcome site for purchasing t-shirts and souvenirs during intermission. They usually have a beverage table as well. I would definitely refer this venue to friends and family. read more

No matter the event, the moment you step into the lobby, you've nearly already gotten your money's worth because El Campanil is such a historic gem. The theater was restored and Antioch - all of East County, really - is better off for it. This is a one-of-a-kind treasure with lovely entertainment offerings. I recently attended the exclusive big-screen debut of "Forgotten Evil" filmed in Antioch by Antioch High grad Anthony Ferrante. What a joyful night to watch this tribute to our city and in this glorious venue. I highly recommend everyone go downtown, see an event at Campanil and enjoy a little slice of the dreamy past. read more

El Campanil is a gem. I have seen many live shows here with blues bands, classic rock cover bands, and more. No bad seats. Friendly folks. Beautiful venue inside with nice acoustics. I am glad to have such a nice local theater in our community. read more

Just came home after attending Delta Blues Festival benefit concert, and it was incredible. I must have had the stupidest grin on my face, because all the performers came over to our end of the stage to look at me. El Campanil surprised the heck out of me. This is not a struggling backwater company(forgive me, El Campanil for being a cultural snob, and not attending earlier!). This is a real living breathing peace of California culture, with a huge variety of acts and shows! It is obvious that whoever is running El Campanil is a great arts manager, who also loves this venue. One owes it to one's self to attend at least once to experience it. The interior is beautiful, done in the Spanish/Moorish/deco-ish style. The only beef I have are with the seats - they are old, and not too comfortable - though in good shape. Think San Francisco opera.... one must suffer a little to enjoy a lot, I guess. P.S. Ticket prices vary with shows, but are very fair. They are having International Movie Nights now. read more

Okay. Time to revisit my earlier review of El Campanil Theater, in Antioch. Upon further review ( Rick, you can put away your club) El Campanil gets FIVE big stars. For being a beautiful place to see live entertainment and great foreign films, and for having a very warm and friendly staff on hand to assist your patrons in whatever we need. How wonderful to be able to see great entertainment locally. To not have to drive miles and miles to feel good. To be able to sit and look around and see happy faces of other locals who are also enthralled by what they see and hear. El Campanil should be THE place for locals to be proud of and support. And the best way to show that is to buy a ticket and take in the experience. So, great entertainment. Friendly and welcoming staff. And Rick, the man who works tirelessly to put it all together and always makes us proud. Fellow citizens of Antioch, get downtown and take in a show. Out of towners...don't be afraid to drive over the hill to East County. You will also love this theater and you will tell your friends and THEY will thank you for turning them on to El Campanil.
