Take out experience. Ordered chicken quesadilla and chicken chimichanga meals, extra chips and salsa. My first mistake was not looking at the menu. The plates did not come with any salad; lettuce, tomato, sour cream or possibly guac. I would have order it and paid extra. This left all the food to become a one note experience. The chimi was fried, but the container steamed the shells by the time I got home. Soggy. Filling was only shredded chicken. Again. Not bad, just boring after a few bits. I've been to mexican restaurants all over NC and some out of state. El charro still stands to be the best I've ever had. Regardless if I order something regular or if I go out of my way to customize a complicated order it's always done right and the food and drinks are on point. timely and delicious! Sometimes, when you stop in the middle of no where, your expectations are pretty low for the quality and service you are about to receive, but I can tell you El Charro was fantastic and we had lovely meet up with some family after attending a wedding here. We started with just waters, chips, salsa, and cheese dip. The cheese dip was delicious and devoured quickly. For entrees, I got the ACP (which is hard to mess up, but was very good). The food was really good! Unfortunately my waitress was new so when I ordered there was some confusion. I ordered the cucumber margarita, and it was on the rocks. Very strong smoky mezcal flavor, which wasn't bad, but I felt like each sip was basically a shot of liquor. The place has a very authentic feeling and there were many spanish speaking employees so there was no need to translate here. The price was better than I expected, and I wasn't charged extra for any toppings or the chips and salsa. A couple of problems was that I didn't receive water and because no one walked next to my table for a while I had to just wait for my margarita to arrive. The card reader was having trouble, so I had to hang out for an extra 30 minutes until the system worked again because I dont carry cash. I got the #2 burrito with chicken and taco with ground beef, with rice on the side. The chicken was dry and lacked flavor. the red sauce on top was (i'm pretty sure) just tomato sauce. The taco was honestly just disgusting. I couldn't finish it unfortunately, the meat was gross and I don't think I could describe the taste beyond just saying it lacked any spices and just tasted wrong. The rice was alright but dry, I would eat it in tandem with the chicken burrito in order to help with the taste, The chips and salsa were alright but the salsa tasted both spicy and bland at the same time. As they say in the movies, we were just passing through Benson and found El Charro on Yelp and gave it a try. Everything was excellent, ambiance, food service. It was busy but we secured a table that stood by itself (we needed to avoid Covid), and all was well. If you go there, enjoy. When I ordered my drink the bartender said "oh, you mean a Vesper" and my wife ordered a not too sweet Cosmopolitani, which he made very well. My DH and I have eaten here several times and loved the food and service . This time not so much! We ordered off the el a carte menu. First, I had trouble with the person taking my order trying to understand what I was ordering and was it off their menu I'm like yes I'm looking at it right now. we ordered 2 burritos no sauce or cheese . Guess what loaded with cheese and it was more a single fajita than a burrito. My DH ordered a side of rice with tasted old and bad. We also ordered three tacos. I told my DH how great they tasted. The last one I had there has a homemade shell with wonderful tasting ground beef. The ones this time had a store bought shell and the meat was sweet and tasted old. Sad to say that we will not be going back here. Most of the restaurants in Benson are not that good and another one is following in their steps. I love supporting a family business but not if I'm to receive bad food for my money *UPDATE: I called and talked to the manager and she told me that they hired new staff and that's why they didn't know the menu. I told her I understood but what about the food. She said that it was the usual chef and then she said nothing. Daughter had shrimp soup which she gets often in many different places and she said it was good, she liked it. Husband had three different type of tacos and he said they were fine. Sometimes when I come in, I get fantastic service, sometimes when I come in, it's lackluster. I shouldn't have to chase wait staff down to get extra napkins or straws to go with our drinks. I've been going here for quite some time. Back when they inhabited the restricted area of a local hotel. But they were so very good, that they bought and built a free-standing building. For Benson (and the surrounding counties) this a five star. But I've had to normalize it for everywhere else. I eat here almost once per week, and they take on an astounding amount of 10+ dining parties. The fact that they can serve any food at all, let alone hot, is a testament to their abilities. The salsa (hot, in a vague sense) is consistent. If you don't care for hot, they have a mild version that can be ordered, without additional expense. The service is excellent, and the food both Americanized and authentic, is quite good. The service makes the place. And I am a fan. So stop, enjoy some chips and medium-to-spicy salsa. It's very good, indeed. Especially for the price/value ratio. It's not life-changing, but it is consistent beyond words. I say that, as I am a patron of 10+ years. read more

My two daughters and I stopped here for a Saturday night dinner around 6:30pm. There were two large groups and then is, the rest of the restaurant was empty. As we were waiting to order the restaurant began to fill up. It took 15 minutes until we got or order placed. When our food came they brought one of my daughters meals but not the other and only half of mine. It was all like warm. When they finally brought my other daughters food it was the wrong order. We then sat around for an additional 10 minutes to get that corrected and the food wasn't that good, probably because it wasn't warm. If you ever need a great place to eat Mexican, head here. I haven't tried much, but I do have an idea about their taco. El Charro has tacos made with real meat, lettuce, and cheese. It tastes better than Taco Bell! The only problems I have are that service is a little slow and it takes some time for your meal to reach you. Overall, this restaurant is one of its best. Poor quality "mexican food". Chicken quesadilla is soaked in grease, and small, the burrito grande was thrown together and falls apart as soon as I grab it and it is a sloppy mess. Also I specifically asked that my wife's food have no sour cream or guacamole and there is sour cream on her food. I asked if they used quesa fresco, and they said they use white American cheese. For the price, one would think they would use authentic ingredients. I will not go here again, and recommend it to nobody read more

Ordered the cheese sauce and some guacamole ...good Ordered a combo .taco, chili relleno ,and something else. it was ok. Another review stated REAL meat so I was excited for shredded beef or pork...no such luck. The pitcher of margarita's certainly hit the spot but all in all, I can only give 3 stars.
