Good Mexican food. One order last me three meals. Friendly staff and reasonable prices.

One person on the waitstaff did all the work and was very nice. However, the person we had did not know anything about the menu. The salsa was just pureed tomatoes. When we asked if they put anything in it, the waitstaff said, "it is just tomatoes, oh yeah I don't know, it is different all the time." So, i ordered the El Charro Grande. It was all soaked in grease, there was a object that looked like mud with cheese on top. When i stuck a fork in it hamburger meat leaked out of it. Seriously, leaked. It had a awful smell to it. I asked the waitress to take the entire meal back. The smell had ruined my appetite. I DO NOT ever send food back. After the food was taken back no manager came to the table to apologize or offer different food or anything. So, i just sat there for the rest of everyone's meal and not one other person talked to me. Then when we paid our bill, since we were two families together with separate tabs they still put gratuity on it. The rest of the table had their own issues with their food. We used to love this restaurant, but it has gone way downhill. We will not be back. read more

Found this place by accident driving from Florida to New York. We needed gas and wanted to find something to eat. We stumbled upon this Mexican restaurant which is adjacent to the Red roof inn motel. Was a little skeptical at first but I have to tell you the food was delicious . My husband had chicken fajitas which he loved and I had a shrimp rice and bean dish that was absolutely fantastic. We drive back and forth from Florida to New York on a regular basis and this will now become one of our regular stops. read more

We don't go out for Mexican very often. We ended up staying in Dunn longer than planned, so decided to give this place a try. We're so glad we did! Both times we were seated right away. We ordered margaritas. They were huge and had a good flavor. Our server brought chips and salsa. The chips may be the only negative of the meal. They weren't bad, but they weren't great. The salsa was good. The menu is huge. It was hard to decide. We ended up ordering a Steak with Shrimp, a Steak Burrito, and Fried Shrimp Chimichangas. The Fried Shrimp Chimichangas came with an enchilada cheese sauce on top and rice and beans. The chimi with the sauce was memorable. I would go back just for that. Delicious! We finished with deep fried ice cream for dessert. The service was very good. Each server we had was attentive. The food came out quickly and hot. My only regret is that we didn't order the Burrito California. Both servers recommended it. It sounds good! Maybe another time. Relaxing atmosphere! Great food! Good service! Several of us are on a bicycle trip across North Carolina. One of the nights we stayed across the street from El Charro grande and we decided to try the place. This is a place that foodies dream of. This is not a business that spends a lot of its effort on ambience. The 1970s guady Mexican decorating just lends authenticity to the family nature of this business. I ordered Pollo Chipotle and my lady ordered Fajitas Pastor. Both dishes sang with Angel's delicious care and presentation. I recommend asking for the Salsa roja if you enjoy intense and flavorful mexican sauce. Not for the faint of heart! We ordered home made flan for dessert and it was dense and flavorful, a very good portion. The prices are very reasonable and in line with keeping local customers coming back. Manager Jorge and server Jenny and her assistant Liz all have nice personalities and worked to earn our money. We would be regulars if we lived here. This was an amazing find. We had been driving all day and stopped at a local hotel. We saw the restaurant sign and thought we'd give the restaurant a try. We are so glad we did. They have fantastic service and amazingly delicious food. The enchilada verdes was the best I've ever eaten. The sauce was amazing. They offer decent drink specials from what I saw posted inside the establishment and their menu offers lots of options. We stopped here after a very long drive. Service was very attentive. Food came quickly. My quesadilla was tasty as was the rice. My husband's fajita was a very generous portion and was quite flavorful. The ambience was traditional Mexican with a novella on the small corner tv, a mariachi wall painting and Mexican music playing in the background. For a quick stop this was perfect. read more

Return visit one year later....we were excited to return to El Charro Grande. Actually stopped in Dunn just to eat here. It was a quiet Monday evening around 6:30 and greatly warmly by staff. They brought over warm chips and salsa and took our drink order. We both ordered entrees I decided on a house salad and a small tortilla soup and my husband ordered a combination. I rethought my choice and changed it to a large soup. The salad was lovely, even had a small scoop of guacamole. The large soup was HUGE , I wish she would have said something, I ate half and I still had a quart to go home with. It was delicious but way too much for one person, I would say enough for 3! My husband's combination, quesadilla and burrito was disappointing, they looked almost identical. A burrito in NY is like a wrap filled with meat , rice and beans. Oh well, we ended on a huge slice of flan, took half home. Would I be anxious to come off 95 just to stop here? Not as much. But still a nice place to eat if your staying in the area. read more

I had a burrito grande at El Charro's, the 1st decent meal I've had in Dunn/Erwin. Our go-to had been Cracker Barrel, but 40 ballplayers took up the whole restaurant, so we had to pivot. My wife saw El Charro had 4.1 stars, so we took a chance. The parking lot was deserted at 1:45 which sapped my confidence. We pushed through the entrance, were greeted happily and our waitress made sure our menu choices were what we expected. To my surprise, the burrito was huge and a flavor-bomb in my mouth! After our meal, we were embarrassed that our sit-down meal in a nice restaurant was $20. I understand how the China buffet, all-you-can-eat pizza place, Waffle House and Cracker Barrel stay in business. They have a captive clientele of families with kids and serve bad food. Add to those places the fish houses that deep fry everything, and you're stuck having to cook at home or risk type-2 diabetes. Perhaps I got lucky with the burrito. If I had made it myself, it couldn't have been more to my liking. It contained fajita meat, and grilled peppers and onions, Oh My! The best part: all the ingredients tasted fresh! Have you ever bitten into a meat-filled burro that tasted rancid or spoiled? I have, and it's not very nice. I won't claim it was the best burrito I've had. The meat could've used some salt. Still, I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to eating there again very soon! read more

I kind of feel like I don't need to say much. This place never disappoints. They allow you to order smaller portion sizes all day long & they always make sure you get your money's worth. I ordered two meal trays and a side of queso for less than $21! Customer service is A+ & it's always fresh. If you're passing through this is your sign to stop! Best choice in the city for the cuisine, it's my promise. SN: I included the most up to date menu but let it be noted there is signage about increases. I always try and stop here on my drive down to Hilton Head Island. They have some of the best Mexican food on the East Coast. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa as all traditional places should. This past time I had the streak fajitas and they did not disappoint. I'd highly recommend stopping if you are in Dunn or hungry driving down I-95, it's conveniently located right off the highways and right across from a gas station so you can fuel up your car after. read more

You can definitely tell this place is authentic, and our waitress was super sweet, friendly, and efficient. I had a lot of special requests and they did a lot to accommodate me. My beef burrito was exactly what I wanted and my brother really enjoyed his moljetas? Or however you say it. My critique- the guacamole was absolutely horrible ( the worst I've ever had I can not even explain it) and they don't carry any cheddar or Mexican blend cheeses, only this white weird cheese I'm not sure what it is. I'm finding that this cheese is a very common thing in the south and several other Mexican restaurants I've tried also only carry this white shredded cheese. Quite possibly the best off ramp Mexican food joint ever. From the outside, this place seems like a no go and the fact part of a motel make it even more suss. But once you step inside, it definitely feels legit. It's bustling with activity, there's a lot of locals inside and the smell of grilled food dominates. The place is definitely cozy due to spacing and that it's probably rarely not at least half full. The service is friendly and prompt. They check in on the regular but don't intrude. And you don't have to wait long even when the place is mad busy during lunchtime. The menu is a encyclopedia but they have all the popular gringo items but also some legit orale selections available. I know you might be thinking "wtf does this guy know about legit Mexican" and that's a fair point. But living in LA for 15 yrs makes it hard not to be acquainted at a minimum. The "Grande" is not a empty boast. Their burritos could easily feed a family of 3. Even their half portions are hard to finish. Every entree is likely to be 2+ lbs. I think I made meals out of just my leftover take out. The food here is epic. Really flavorful and they don't cheap out on the meat or cheese. Happy to support a small business as opposed to going to Chipotle on our road trip but our experience fell a bit short for takeout. After reading the handful of raving reviews from fellow Yelpers it was a go for my family. We ordered - Spinach Quesadilla (felt like only Spinach and Cheese) - Spinach Enchiladas (Pretty good) - Shrimp Quesadilla (Pretty good) - Taco Salad (Ok, Shredded chicken isn't marinated) - Side Salad (ended up being lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream lol but I don't blame em I asked him to make this off menu but more effort would've been nice) - Guacamole (yum, super fresh) - Tortilla Soup (they forgot it) - Chips and Salsa (comes with every order, really good) While the food was decent, they left out my specific add ons they charge for. I asked for hot sauce and Jalapeños which were both left out the order. It happens but I feel like we had these items it would've made the meal much better since we like our food with some spice. They gave us a ton of Verde and Mild Salsa which we appreciated but damn if we had the hot sauce. Overall, the taste was more on the bland side we had to drench everything with salsa (very mild). They also forgot my Tortilla Soup completely and the meals only had rice, no beans. I'm not saying don't order. I'm just saying check your order if you takeout and if you like flavor make sure you get hot sauce and jalapeños. It was difficult for us since we had a big order. Portions aren't SO huge from what you'd expect and what was described. My favorite part was the Chips Salsa and Guac which all tasted very fresh. read more

Wow! SO MUCH FOOD. We ordered three combination dinners for take-away and it was a feast. Tacos, burritos, chalupas, enchiladas...it was filling and hit the spot for us road-weary travelers. My ultra-picky 7 year old declared the rice and beans to be "delicious!" so that is a high compliment.
