It's funny how things work in Edmonton. There were no Venezuelan places in town and then boom, two open at the same time. I've heard about Avila Arepa but not a peep about El Fogón Latino. I happened to be near the area with L so I suggested we check them out on a Friday afternoon. I didn't realize it's right in the same plaza as Safeway, Busters Pizza and KFC/Taco Bell. The clientele here is "interesting". One guy walked in literally to check his lottery ticket and then left. That's right, you can buy lottery tickets here too!Welcome to 118 Avenue. The menu is short and sweet; arepas, empanadas, cachapas, pupusas and tequeños. There was all day breakfast, westernized part too but we just ignored that. There was also a few homemade desserts (like tres leche). - BBQ pork arepa ($6.99) - you can get the fillings hot or cold. We got the former and added cheese ($1.00). Good but prepare for the grease. BBQ pork was soft and tasty. Would get the arepas again. - Shredded beef empanadas ($2.99) - this was our favourite. The dough was fantastic. It reminded me of a pastry my grandma used to make. The beef filling inside was flavourful and tender. We liked the beef more than the pork. - Pupusa with cheese ($4.29) - our least favourite. Came with coleslaw and sauce. Pupusa was a tad dry. Better places elsewhere to get your pupusa fix. - Tequeños ($6.75 for 6) - cheese sticks in bread. Cheese oozyness. The texture was fantastic; it was almost like a pastry. Quite soft and flaky. You can tell everything is homemade and quality is there. Just prepare mentally for the carb and grease overload. Will be back for the cachapas! 3.5 stars.

Pupusas are my favorite latino food. The place I used to get them is gone, so I'm happy "El Fogón Latino" is here. It translates to "Stove". Great menu, even better prices. HUGE portions. You won't go away hungry. I ordered 4 mixed pupusas to go. I was told to sit and eat some soup while I waited for my order to be up. On the house! "Marcellino" explained that ..."the stomach needs a base for all this food." It was a beef, veg, dumpling soup. Super yummy and filling. I watched 2 young men eat one of everything on the menu. They just kept eating and eating!! Empanadas, cachangas, pupusas and "arepas". Arepa means three things: as slang, it means both "vagina" and "good luck"; but, literally, it describes one of the most important things you could eat in the country. It's like a fried meat sandwich 10x better than a quesadilla. They serve an all day breakfast. This is important to me as hubs and I don't hardly get out of bed before noon. The liquor license is coming soon. The beer, wine and cocktail selection is already on their big menu board. It's mainly a fast food joint, but there is room for 20 to sit comfortably and dine in. There are 2 T.V.s and a lotto terminal to keep you occupied. Parking is easy. It's right beside the Sobey liquor store on 118 ave and 81 street.

We grabbed take out one night because we were intrigued by the place. First of all, really clean but not much to look at on the inside. If you want to be comfortable, or just quickly eat, then it is fine. I suggest, if you are meeting with friends for drinks and dinner, just grab a variety of things and head back to someone's house. The owner was super friendly and helped us pick out a few things. This place is famous for their arepas which is basically a Venezuelan white corn cake that is stuffed with a variety of fillings. We tried three on these....the shredded beef, chicken and soft cheese, and the chicharronada with Queso de Mano Arepa. they were all good, but by far the best one was the shredded beef. It was super flavourful. We also tried the White Cheese and Shredded Meat Cachapa which was tasty as well as another dish that I can't remember what was offered. Everything was tasty and interesting. My two criticisms - they really need a website that describes and promotes all their food and perhaps their specials as well. Also, if they decide to expand, I would really love a comfortable sit down restaurant. No where else in the city has this food, so why don't they expand and showcase it for the deliciousness as it is...rather than the take out/cafeteria style place it is now.

El Fogón Latino offers friendly service and tasty food, but it costs a little bit more to eat there than I care to pay.

The deal was for 10 bucks you got an arepa but the thing was less then a hockey puck in size. We chose two - the pulled pork, and the beef. The pulled pork definately packed more flavour. And it was just meat with the bun...no veggies or cheese. I really think if they were less cheap adding those things would have made it more satisfying. I also ordered the yucca fries which were excellent. They were perfectly cooked and plump and because they weren't on the special menu they were plentiful. They came with a mojito dip which was zippy and tasty. Service was nothing great. They barely came to service us and see how we are doing/ It is cute inside , but not comfortable for sitting. Although there were a lot of interesting things on the menu I doubt that my husband and I will be back. Based on the service and the skimpy portions it isn't really worth giving a second chance.
