The four of us ate with gusto and were pleased with everything we tried. In particular, the Tres Leches cake is outstanding, with a perfect texture, not too watery and not too sweet. Very like the cake I had eaten prior in a diner along the Texas-Mexico border. Based on the positive reviews I had seen online, I was ultimately disappointed with my experience. The prices are relatively high for the portion sizes, and we waited over an hour to be seated, which would make me hesitant to visit on a weekend. The restaurant itself is quite small, which is not inherently an issue; however, on the evening we visited it was cold outside, and each time the door opened it noticeably affected the indoor temperature. Additionally, the décor felt somewhat rushed and unfinished, which detracted from the overall atmosphere. Fantastic food with generous portions! Was craving Mexican food and heard good things about this restaurant and it did not disappoint! We got the nachos with birria, pastor tacos, and the quesabirria. If you couldn't tell, we really wanted the birria items and ooh was that birria tasty! What really stood out to us among our food was the quesabirria. It had the perfect ratio of ingredients and was just something I've never seen at other restaurants. The pastor tacos were good, but nothing too special about them. Nachos were your usual nachos but having the birria on top definitely elevated it. Pretty great. A fun casual ambiance to sit and have some food and a drink if you are so inclined. It is nice enough for atmosphere on the inside. But not overwhelming Menu is what you would pretty much expect. A whole lot of tacos and other Mexican dishes. My friend and I decided to split some tortillas with dip. I went with the Birra taco. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was really really good. The salsas that came with home made tortillas were flavourful and each one was different. It was hard not to fill up on these while waiting for the entrees My tacos were excellent. Braised beef with so much flavour and dipping in to the broth made it exceptional. Beans and rice were great sides. Price point it was good value for your money. The only complaint is that the chairs and setting isn't great to linger on to chat. Okay, let's start with this is a true hidden gem. The restaurant is small with limited seating, but we made a reservation for the 4 of us, and everything was ready when we arrived. The service was very impressive, and the pitcher of margaritas was very well made. We started with a dish none of us had ever tried before. The Patacones with chipotle chicken were amazing and so full of flavor. For our mains we tried Tex Beef tacos, (2) Shrimp specialty tacos (grilled not deep fried) and the Don Birria specialty tacos. All three dishes were so good but based on a shared tasting around the table our favorite was the Don Birria with the broth consommé. This was to die for. I am still thinking about it this morning :) For dessert we shared the Yuca Churros, and they were the perfect ending for the meal. Their birria is arguably the best in the city and they have fun fusion dishes like birria poutine (it's massive) and shaved ice desserts called cholados. Decided to try this restaurant based on great reviews from a FB group. Went on a Friday night. The restaurant was busy but we were lucky to get a table right away. The service was prompt and friendly. We ordered Pina Colada pitcher. Loved the coconut rims. Ordered the Chicharron to start. The pork was cooked very well and it was flavourful. A small restaurant that serves authentic Mexican and Colombian food. The menu has a wide variety of items to choose from. The food I had was very delicious and filling. It's definitely a worthwhile restaurant to try out if you're craving quality Latin cuisine. Cholado Sweet Fusion $15- A Colombian treat that doubles as a drink and a dessert. Mines had guava mix, a variety of fresh fruit, and wafer bar topped with condensed milk. A unique shaved ice that was very refreshing, strong in guava flavour and wasn't too sweet. The drink was yummy and filling. Tacos Don Birria $19- Braised smoked beef brisket on three corn tortillas. It comes with a spicy broth dip consommé that you can dip your tacos in.I found it a bit messy to eat but very delicious. It was quite cheesy but the brisket was tender and seasoned well. The buzziest restaurant for Mexican food in Edmonton these days has got to be Smokin' Barrels... Make that Mexican / Colombian food. EDify Magazine has named them as Best Mexican Restaurant 2023 and that's a pretty big deal for a small restaurant in kinda a weird part of the city. For only being open for about a year, they have successfully made quite a name for themselves and the people have been making their way to Mistatim Industrial to find them. Another "north of the wall" venture for me, I was happy to do so on a Saturday evening in the name of tacos. Smokin' Barrels promises an "urban meets authentic" experience and you really do get a sense that they are accomplishing just that. Once inside the restaurant, the vibe is really fresh and the place is super cute. Sticking to their name, there are actual barrels used as decoration and some of them have even been transformed into tables. I liked the commitment to the barrel (although none were smokin'). The space is absolutely packed with beautiful live plants and greenery which makes the atmosphere feel very tropical. I loved sitting around in what felt like a little slice of Latin paradise. It wasn't long before each and every table was occupied and I thought that our friendly server did a great job of managing a full house of customers. My drink order was an easy one because they have Horchata Tropical Waters ($5.00) on the menu which is my go-to. There are a lot of other great flavours as well; mango, Jamaica, guava, tamarindo, and passion fruit. I'm sure that any of these would be bursting with bright fruity flavours. But the horchata is forever number one in my heart and this one was a perfect version. A traditional Mexican drink made up of white rice soaked in water and then flavoured with cinnamon, it's sweet, nutty, and milky... But also somehow quite refreshing. It tastes decadent but isn't thick. I love a horchata (and I loved this one) and it will continue to be my beverage of choice at Mexican restaurants. The first dish to catch my eye came from the Antojitos part of the menu and I was immediately curious about the Patacones (4 crisp plantain topped with chipotle chicken or Tex beef, smoky chipotle sauce with guacamole and pico piña - $16.00) because they sounded unique. Our server suggested that we could have some with chicken and some with beef and this seemed like the best way to try a bit of everything. This dish was wonderful!! I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything quite like it! Instead of a tortilla the base of each "tostada" is made up of thinly sliced plantains that have been fried and fused together. This very well might be the most incredible "tortilla" that I've ever heard of. I love the way that plantains combine an ideal savoury-sweet flavour and then they're getting piled high with other delicious toppings! Between the chipotle chicken and Tex beef I actually preferred the beef. I found the meat extremely flavourful and super satisfying. Everything about this plate was super fresh, especially thanks to the pico piña. (This is like a pico de gallo except with pineapple.) The patacones were the highlight of the meal for me! I loved the opportunity to try something new and the flavours were fun and exciting! Smokin' Barrels is known for their burritos, chimis, and enchiladas. They also serve Colombian dishes like empanadas. And there's some pretty crazy stuff on the menu like the pizza don birria and the don birria poutine. (They know that their birria is good - so they can turn it into anything!) For me, I had to go hard on the tacos. Starting with the Tacos Pescado (Crisp tilapia on 3 corn tortillas, topped with smoky chipotle sauce, lettuce, lime, pico piña & guacamole - $18.00) because a fish taco is always my fave. All of the taco dishes are served with either rice & beans or chips & salsa. We selected the rice & beans for this one, which were served in large portions. The tacos were generous in size and packed with bright and fresh toppings. I liked the bite on the corn tortilla and it tasted expertly-made. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the fish. Meant to be crispy, I found the batter to be very mushy and not fried to a crisp at all. The fish itself was decently meaty and tender but the soggy batter was off-putting. However, I loved both the Mexican rice and refried beans. Both were very flavourful and authentic. The most popular dish at Smokin' Barrels (and as far as trends go in general) is the Tacos Don Birria (Braised smoked beef brisket on 3 corn tortillas, topped with mozzarella cheese, onions, cilantro & lime. Came to Smokin' Barrels on a Friday evening. The location is in the heart of an industrial areal. So on a Friday evening I had expected it to be very quiet. There were a few other folks in the place, as well as a fairly steady stream of take out orders going out the door. I'm told this place opened up in March 2022. I had ordered the Smokin' Burrito and my wife ordered the fish tacos. It took a bit longer than expected for the food to come to us. We had decided to eat in at 1 of the two counter areas. Each counter area can seat about 6 people. So hence there are about 12 seats inside the restaurant. Once we got our food, both were very fresh and the burrito was hot. The Burrito was a steak burrito and the steak was nicely cooked and spiced. The fish tacos, which would normally have Tilapia, was substituted with salmon (we were informed prior to ordering). The Taco ingredients were very fresh and great flavours. There was a generous amount of food for both of us. Overall, The location is in an industrial area off 156St, and hence there isn't much to look at out the windows. The place is easy to find and plenty of parking in front of and around the building. Kind of located in the middle of nowhere. Lots of parking in front of the restaurant as the businesses around it are closed by suppertime. I think we were the only ones here then entire time 6-8PM on a Tuesday night (4 of us - boyfriend, me + another couple). Two bathrooms which were clean and single-person use. Friend got the pineapple juice drink - very thick but yummy she reported. If you message them 24 hours before you go you get a coupon for buy 2 get 1 free. And Tuesday is cheap taco night so instead of $18/3 tacos its $15/3 which to me is more reasonably priced. Friends got the nachos which looked and tasted great. Staff also brought out my boyfriend and my tacos as they were made so we had tacos while our friends had their nachos which made it less awkward. My Chipotle Chicken tacos came first - very nice. Chicken was not dry, loved the corn tortilla, great slaw mix. Pescado (fish) tacos came next. I did not like this one as much as other fish taco I have had. I had a bad after taste but that could have just been the amount of onion which I am not a fan of. The corn tortilla looked different for this one but was also good. The Beef Brisket tacos were really greasy and the broth dip consommé was a cool addition but I thought it was absolutely tasteless. And as the taco was already so greasy it did not need more moisture. Definitely felt this one was "less-healthy" as you couldn't see any vegetables/slaw - just Meat! and so it sat heavier in our guts too. Friend got the Chipotle Chicken tacos which she did not even try after eating so many nachos and her plus one got the Smokin Burrito which he enjoyed. I ate 3 tacos (one of each), boyfriend ate 4 (2 Chicken ones) and we left 2 to take home so we would have room for dessert! We opted for the Cake 3 Leches. So hard to choose! It was a very large slice but that was great considering the price. It was basic vanilla cake that was super moist (soaked in milk but not soggy!). Loved that it was not dry. Loved the whip cream on top - not too sweet. Overall this dessert isn't too sweet which was awesome. Fresh strawberries on top was great. 9/10 - just a bit pricey. Service was disappointing. She came once for our order, once with our order and topped up water, and once to give up take-out boxes = all in 2 hours we were there (the Only ones there). Often no staff at front of house to ask for assistance/more water. Boyfriend ran out of water and had to drink mine. I liked that they did not push the bill on us, but it was also unclear if we were waiting for them to bring it to us or we go to the front counter - would be great if she checked-in and let us know to come to the counter when we were ready. Also disappointing was the bill. No physical bill = no checking prices. All that showed up on the machine was $42....hmmm $15/taco order x 3 orders but - 1 free order with coupon + $10 dessert.... Today my husband and I found this awesome restaurant. We love Latin food and have been to many in the city. Smokin' Barrels is the best so far. The menu gives you lots of choices. We ordered the fish tacos and enchiladas verdes. Everything was fresh and delicious. Seasoned perfectly. The very nice girl who took our order was friendly and helpful. The price didn't seem reasonable for the quality - i.e., it costs more than it should in my opinion. The service was sort of inattentive and careless. As for the taste of the food, it was pretty standard Canadian x Mexican food, not crazy flavourful. I specifically had a problem with the guacamole, it was basically just a green paste. If you were to go in and didn't have anyone in front of you I suppose the turnaround time would be good-however I was behind a table of six and it took over 20 minutes.
