The food was AMAZING! Great cheese sauce for dipping chips and smothering steak burritos. I went with my boyfriend on a Friday night, and there was a live band singing old country music. I was in town for a car show and when there are no concessions, you leave in search of food. After hitting 2 American restaurants that were closed during the lunch hour, we found this gem open. Well a second visit to El Maya! We r not disappointed. Very good food again. Wife had the hawiian fajitas and I had the Chipotle fish tacos. Excellent choices. We had lunch here on a Thursday. There was a moderate crowd but the two kids waiting tables handled everyone with ease. It was a young gal and guy and they were both very congenial and attentive. My daughter had the Nachos Fajitas and I had the Taco Chilangos. Everything was good, although I would've preferred my steak less done. I'm sure if I would've requested it they would've made it that way. I just didn't know. The chips and salsa brought to the table were great. The sauce served with my tacos was OMG hot!! This review is written after only one meal here, which was excellent, but we'll need to see more of a track record to give El Maya five stars. We will be back to test more of the menu but this first try was terrific. The salsa is not spicy but has a good flavor and good salsa can be difficult to find. The waitress told us they also have a spicier salsa which we will try next time. I had pork flautas (you have to ask if you want flour tortillas) and my wife had the chicken taco lunch special. Rice and beans with both and the veggies had a generous portion of guacamole, a very nice touch! Excellent service, too! It's all good! read more

The margaritas are not great, to much mix and hardly any tequila...so sour makes your mouth pucker. I have had a few at different days and times and they are always the same. The prices and food are outstanding, but the service is TERRIBLE:/ my husband and I go there when we don't have anything planned after, as you can expect to be there for a while. Every time we have gone, I've had to wait a while to be seated, find a waitress and ask for a refill on drinks, find a waitress and ask for the check, and stand up at the counter for over 5 minutes to pay with no line in front of me. This is probably one of my favorite Mexican places in Missouri I've eaten so far. The staff was super friendly, on top of our refills, and kept us updated on our food. The food was soooo tasty. I got a seafood enchilada meal and it was seasoned perfectly and had so much flavor. I especially appreciated that my enchiladas were made with corn tortillas. Stoped here in our way traveling. Service was good. Restaurant was clean. Everyone was friendly. The food was a little disappointing as was the margarita. Tried the mango margarita it was sweet but tasteless and weak. The queso fundito was mostly pork and jalapeño- hardly any queso. The guacamole was average- I like a little more garlic. Sneaky little place! Yelp directions and Google maps pretty much suck at getting you here, but just get to murfin's and it's in their parking lot. Granted it was a hot day, but the thermostat in here said 82, so I ate pretty quickly just to get back outside and get in to my air conditioned car lol. Next time I'm going to actually savor my meal and order a drink or two. I ordered the Baja fish tacos, and the server said they were out of Baja sauce but offered to substitute some other sort of Chipotle sauce... it was delicious. My tacos were clearly beer battered (maybe too strong on the beer? Can i admit that?), the avocado was perfect, the slaw was tasty, and it was served with a menudo style soup instead of just regular refried beans. The only thing I would change was to have it served on corn tortillas with a slice or two of lime. I'm sure I could have asked for that, but I wanted to try it as the chef chose it to be served for my first visit. The table next to ours was absurdly complaining that every dish was served with rice, and the server was very accommodating with substitutes and suggestions for them. The service was fast, the food was outstanding, and on par pricewise with every other Mexican place. I honestly would make the drive from Springfield to come eat here again. I just might wait until the weather is a little cooler so I don't have to sweat and battle flies inside. read more
