I have heard SO many locals talk about this place, and absolutely loved the food I got! This meal was only $17 and lasted me 3 meals. I got the shrimp and steak fajitas to go. These came hot, and were cooked very well. The shrimp was perfect! The steak was a little tough but not bad. The flavor was definitely there, but I like it hot so did add my own hot sauce. I like that they were able to add veggies instead of the rice/beans which I don't prefer. Overall this was an amazing meal and probably the best I have had in town so far! Mezcal was recommended to me by several people. My son and i decided to try it for dinner. It was easy to access . It was next to Walmart. The restaurant was clean and inviting. We were seated right away. The waiter was very attentive. I ordered a burrito mezcal and my son ordered the fajitas mezcal. We were surprised by the large portions and the quality. My burrito was excellent. It contained beef, chicken shrimp. My son really enjoyed his fajitas. The price was very good. We will definitely return. Came here not really expecting too much and I was not disappointed! My buddy and I came here on a Thursday night and it was per busy but we got seated right away. Waiter was decent and the decor was decent and the food was decent. Nothing to wow Home about. The portion size was large but there was just something missing with the food. I had the Al Pastor nachos and I had to add tomatoes and cilantro and salsa. If I had guacamole and sour cream I would have added that. The taste was just ok (decent) but it really could have used a little pizzaz. It has plenty of meat, chips, cheese and onion. We eat a lot of Mexican food in Arizona, so while traveling through Columbus Nebraska, we had to try this spot. A hidden gem. Tacos were crispy and just the perfect size. Chips were homemade and the salsa perfect. Flavor and freshness were spot on. Enchiladas were made to perfection, and again tasted fantastic. Burritos were big and full of fillings. El Mezcal is a relatively recent (6 years?) but firmly established Columbus mainstay. Their decor is recently updated, and as usual the place is charming, clean and nearly at capacity. Waiters, hosts, waitresses and bartenders are extremely polite and professional, the menu is varied and the prices are excellent for the quality and speed of your meal and service. Never a bad experience in all the years of going here, and the only quibble I could possibly make is that I want the kitchen to add some more exotic options to the menu. 5/5 stars. read more

Storefront style restaurant in a strip mall setting. Parked out front during a chilly sleeting rainy evening after work. Lots of diners packed into the seats by the windows. Walked in and stood by the seating stand for a few minutes and then was greeted and promptly seated. A friendly young lady delivered warm tortilla chips and housemade salsa to my table. Soon after my server inquired about drinks and food order. I ordered Guacamole dip and Enchilada Nortena for my meal. In less than three minutes my Guacamole was delivered and it was chocked full of tomatoes and jalepeno chunks. Very tasty both by the fork full and on chips. Then to attack my Enchilada yummy the tortilla shell was piping hot and loaded with grilled chicken and mushrooms and cheese. Very tasty and as a side chopped lettuce and sour cream. I was greeted and seated promptly in an already busy restaurant. I ordered an ice tea as I reviewed their well designed menu. Their iced tea was fresh brewed, a must. They quickly followed that with warm corn chips and a salsa made with a very fresh blend of tomato, pepper, cilantro, spice, and lime. A great start! I ordered the Carnitas plate and my meal got even better! Authentic, meaty, roasted pork with a side of tender, moist Spanish rice, frijoles (made from scratch I'm sure) guacamole, pico de gallo, and warm corn tortillas. I savored every bite! Was having a rough day, woke up at 4 am and drove from Omaha for a softball game that was then delayed 2+ hours but all was forgotten once we were seated at El Mezcal. We were happily greeted and quickly sat. The chips and salsa was superb and the meal was even better, absolutely no words other than delicious. And don't even get me started on our waiter Ronaldo. I was just here four days ago and I'm already back. Seriously some of the best food around. Only complaint is that staff dont fulfill their full potential. I arrived for dinner at 8:45, finished eating at 9:20, did not get offered a to go box until 9:35. It took another 15minutes for him to come back around and give us our ticket. Even if Lincoln doesn't make you think of Mexican food , if you had a craving this is where I would tell you to go. I stopped by on a weeknight around 8:30. There was one big party of 10 finishing up and two or three people on the bar side. I was starving so I ordered a little bit of everything. If I knew how big the portions were I could have done a better job but the leftover fajitas and guac was a perfect snack for later. I ordered the mexicana guac, shrimp ceviche and the mezcal fajitas. Nothing tasted like it was being reheated but it definitely came out faster than it should have. Usually you hear the fajita meat and veggies sizzling on the cast iron pan but all the food was seasoned right and the portion was huge! I ate the ceviche first so I didn't get a picture but more than enough shrimp and avocado for a ~$3-4 portion. The guac I got had cilantro onions and jalapeno with tomato on top. I was hoping that this would be spicy but I ended up asking for diced fresh jalapenos to add. This was also premade and I think they just garnish with tomatoes before bringing it out. I would've wanted more cilantro as well but I refrained from my diva ways. The main course of fajitas was huge! Easily enough to feed two people. Plenty of shrimp and steak meat and nice a surprise of pork rib meat(top middle of the picture). Good mixed veggies of oninon bell pepper and tomatoes. Everything you would expect a few tortillas. I'm glad they took me in as they were closing early at 9 since it wasn't that busy but got everything I wanted. I think my bill was about $35 but plenty of leftovers for a 2nd meal. I wouldnt be afraid to try one of their seafood dishes next time I come through but for my first stop this was a great meal. read more

It was sorely and sadly disappointing. Not in a, I built this place up to unicorn-like status in my head then got an average experience! Nope, I was a realist and got a craptastic experience. Wait staff was inattentive. Took forever to be seated, have our order ready, anything.. Food came out cold, seemed to be prepared without any attention to... Well anything. Even trying to pay our bill was a crapshow. We stood at the register forever while staff walked by and looked away when they saw us standing there. Really upsetting, every time I come here I think "heck yeah, this Mexican food is going to be BOMB"! Every time I walk out I'm extremely disappointed! The service was horrible, the waitress didn't try to make us feel welcomed or important. We didn't get our appetizer at any point of the meal, and had no explanation why we didn't get it. Also I ordered a chili relleno for dinner and the waitress brought it out like 8 minutes before the rest of the the food. Like why would I eat this before if it was my dinner not my appetizer! If you are looking for authentic great tasting Mexican food this is the place to go. The owner always says hi to us when we come in and the environment is nice and quiet. I usually order the polo loco, it's a chicken breast smothered in white cheese sauce that comes with rice, beans and tortillas or your choice. We go there on the weekends and have yet to have a bad experience. If you are looking for a place in Columbus that has consistent quality food I would highly recommend this place! read more
