We had an excellent experience at Husker Steak House on Friday evening. We were visiting Schuyler from Oregon and we brought my cousin, who lives in Schuyler, in for dinner. It has been three years since we were last in Nebraska, but Husker remains to be the best Steakhouse in the area. My cousin had the Chicken Fried Steak, our daughter had the Jack Daniels Sirloin and my wife, being vegetarian had salad, green beans and baked potato. All were excellent. The Jack Daniels flavor was a bit strong on the steak but she enjoyed it also. I was fortunate to have the last Duck special. It was remaining from the Thursday night Duck Feast. Wow. It came with Duck Stuffing, Sauerkraut with Dumplings and a huge serving of Duck. The hostess at the front was extremely friendly, and even checked on us to ensure a server was going to visit us. The server was excellent. She had perfect timing and was very engaging. Thank you Husker for being such a great Steakhouse and a great place to visit. read more

The steaks were extremely overpriced !! Twice as high as they should be !! And when my family and I went to eat our ribeyes they were so tough and stringy we couldn't even eat them !! Hidden gem in Columbus. If you don't go early, i recommend a reservation. My meal and appetizer were exactly what and how I wanted them. Very attentive and personable service. I have never had a bad steak at the Husker House. It is a long established type of streak house evidenced by you being able to get a side of spaghetti with your steak. Yes, the place is straight out of the late 1970s, but that is part of the charm. The main dining area is nicely appointed with comfortable traditional steak house chairs and solid tables. Let's face it, if you're looking for Ruths Chris, then you won't be in Columbus, but you won't be pay those high prices either. It is a small town restaurant and it has that vibe to it. The bar area has TVs if you are interested in watching a game and it appears to be well stocked to be able to take care of most mixed drink combinations. There is plenty of seating in there and food service there as well. The servers have always been on top of things and done a good job of ensuring my drink is always filled. I am in the Columbus area about 3 months or so a year, eat there probably about once a week while I am in town and even though I know they don't remember me, they always treat me like I am local, valued customer. read more

As a local, everyone boasts about this place but I don't get it. I think it runs solely on nostalgia. But that's my opinion. We had gift card and ordered some of their better menu options including ribeye and sirloin. Everything was cooked fine and throughly--there were no complaints about the presentation. However taste and flavor are lacking. It was just unseasoned steak and basic diner level sides. Inside it's kind of an old fashioned experience--the lights are low and the decor looks unchanged from many decades-- but it's clean. Service is decent-- we had a hard working waitress who attended to us throughly. If you're looking for simple comfort food you'd be fine here but it's kind of hospital food bland level if I'm being honest. Just don't have high expectations. read more

Had a lovely dinner out with family just before the end of the year. We arrived just before they opened and we're seated right away. Good thing because the whole restaurant was full by the time we were ready to leave. Service was superb! It's been a long time since I've had the appropriate timing of my meal (as in we didn't have to wait for our next course and also didn't have multiple plates sitting overcrowded on the table). Everything we ordered came out cooked perfectly, was attractively plated and tasted great. The table ordered sirloins, prime rib, chicken fried steak and burgers - everyone left the table satisfied and happy. This place seems to be a town favorite. I'm not sure why. If you've ever been to an unkept old folks home that smells like stale wet diapers and stagnant unclean smoke, dust, and interior. You've got the Huskers steakhouse. Yum! The wait staff was attentive, but called me "sunshine", "sweetie", "my love" and something else : l - and our beer came quickly so that's good? My husbands steak was done correctly, but tasted like ham? And our onion rings were homemade but tasted like breading with a vague flavor of onion and freezer burn. I'm not clear what about this business keeps people coming back but there it is. I also got violently ill for the 2 days following our visit, my husband also had stomach upset after eating here. Maybe consider a place with interior cleanliness habits or at least sanitation procedures. read more

visited on 4/17/2024. Jeff at the bar seemed to be relatively new to the establishment. very pleasant person and very accommodating. My waitress also was polite. I ordered a 14 oz ribeye baked potato and a house salad with blue cheese. I inquired to Jeff (bartender) if their beef was locally sourced, he couldn't answer the question but referred me to the owner (Tim). When I inquired to the source of the beef, I was inform to the challenges that were being incurred to acquire a quality product grass feed product. ($32.45) for a 14oz ribeye. I have to state in my opinion which I'm not a butcher by any means. But this though a very tender cut of beef... it was the absolute leanest ribeye I HAVE EVR HAD. with that being stated, I expected a different experience. the beef had no marbling what so ever there was a prominent fat cap around the outer edge of the steak. I must admit that I'm disappointed in the steak. Though the steak was very tender there was absolutely no marbling whatsoever. I actually think in my opinion that I received a New York strip rather than a ribeye. Disappointed to say the least. I wouldn't put this on the top of my list for places to return to let alone recommend. for what it's worth save your $$. I do want to add great people seem to be around this establishment. Visited Columbus on a busy summer Saturday night. The food was prototypical Great Plains Fare. I had the prime rib, which was excellent. The service was excellent, better than we had on this trip in the Pacific Northwest. The prices are reasonable for the fare, and well below what we paid in major metro areas and tourist regions. Not only was the food good, but I was touched beyond belief at the empty table with 13 empty chairs and flags on top in honor of those 13 who lost their lives in Afghanistan. First off, the city of Columbus, Nebraska is off the major routes to bigger cities like Omaha, and KC; so you might not be able to enjoy this great family steakhouse. However, if you ARE within 30 miles, then I say put it on your itinerary! They have the most delicious cuts of chops, steaks, chicken and fish that you'll want after a good long day of travel or work. Even though the sign in front of the restaurant says "Come as You Are", I'd suggest showering up a bit and not being a total slob when you walk in. They make good drinks to start off your course, and end your meal with; and the waitresses are both pretty and great at their craft! The sides always compliment their meals (I've been there twice). A good-sized baked potato padded the landing of my New York, one time; and even though I'm not a veggies guy, I ordered that once, and the covered half the plate with fresh vegetables along my top sirloin. Both times I went, there were more than 8 people, and each and everyone of them were big-time pleased with their meals...Pleased and STUFFED. This is an old established old-fashioned steak house. It is retro right down to the vinyl booth covers. The rib-eye was about 3/4" and cooked very well. It could use a little more seasoning, but I added salt and pepper to make it just right. I had the hashbrowns that were very good and crunchy. The salad was cold and the house bleu cheese dressing was very cheesy. As an alternate to veggies, they offer spaghetti. I wished I had ordered the veggies, but the spaghetti was OK. Well let me start by saying the service was good, greeted nicely and server was very friendly but, it went downhill from there. Caesar salad was droopy with bottled dressing of not the highest quality. Hot roll good but not real hot and the butter was cold so not a good combination. I ordered chicken fried steak and the hashbrowns based on Yelp reviews. I was sorely disappointed. Tough, flavorless topped with brown gravy which this and every other southern girl knows should be pan cream gravy, this resembled schnitzel more that chicken fried steak and the hash browns added to the illusion for they were browned but not crispy and resembled a potato latke. So more of a German flair on American food without good results. My husband ordered one of their specialities too-Jack Daniels Sirloin. Over cooked, tough, small for $20.00 and the baked potato was lukewarm at best, couldn't even melt the very cold butter. I do not recommend this place. As a side note the bathroom stalls are so tight that I a 5'9" woman was hit on the head by the stall door while trying to take a seat. read more

The Husker Steak house isn't much to look at from the outside, but the food is pretty good. I went here with my family and enjoyed a tasty chicken fried steak for dinner. Even though I prefer white gravy, the brown gravy served was good. The veggie side dish was subpar. I think the veggies were frozen and nuked I wish there was mashed potatoes served as a side. Nothing is better with a chicken fried steak than mashed potatoes. I opted for a baked potato. The baked potato was cooked nicely, but doesn't compare to mashed potatoes. If you opt for the salad with your dinner and select bleu cheese, opt for crumbles and the dressing. The service was good, especially for a table of 10. My wife wasn't in the mood for a big meal and opted for the spaghetti and was disappointed.
