I dont think there are tons of options for good food on this lonely stretch of I35... we couldn't wait until Kansas City, and we didn't want truck stop food. El Nopal was the perfect balance, and really easy to get to. We had a nice lunch with really authentic food, a great server and comfortable table. I really liked the margarita, and both the chicken street tacos and tacos al carbon were excellent. The prices were great, and our food arrived really fast. The food selection was good I had the beef burrito and beef taco they were both good. Service was quick and they checked back frequently to make sure all was good. They had the traditional dining furniture that I have seen in most Mexican restaurants across the country bright painted scenic chairs. Normally, we make a habit of leaving only positive reviews to help businesses/potential customers. But... This place must have locals/friends reviewing it with 5 stars... Tonight we took a chance on this place while visiting for the 2nd time in 3 months. We have nothing good to say about it. The lighting/ambiance is horrid, the hostess/our waitress sat us at what was one of the worst table choices in the restaurant... Most of the restaurant was empty, but she decided to sit us right next to an obnoxiously loud family of regulars with a toddler. The toddler was the quietest person at the table. The food was not impressive and the water tasted like it was straight from the tap. The "salsa" was a joke and our food was very disappointing. I am giving a three star because while we were dining, there were so many flies it was hard to enjoy your meal and they kind of took our appetite away. My husband asked the waiter and he just laughed and said yeah it's hot in here. Flies are dirty and should not be in a restaurant it made me wonder what the kitchen looked like, I tried not to think about it. The chairs are beautiful and the walls are bright colors and look nice, the flooring and the restrooms and checkout counter all need a good cleaning and updated.. I had the California Polo Chicken, it was good but very thin and the cheese sauce was very thin. The potential is here but they need to really take things up a notch. I love this place! It tastes great, service is fast and friendly and the food is great! We have ordered the bean nachos (6$ for a whole order) and it fed two people and that is amazing to me. The salsa is a little sweet and goes well with the chips that are nice and crispy. It's ok. This is a chain of places - I've seen one in several of the small Missouri towns. As there was one right across from my hotel in Bethany, I figured I'd give one a try. Very friendly servers. Very prompt and efficient service. Decent prices. Ok menu selection. The food was ok - on par with most other strip mall Mexican places. I opted for a combo platter of a beef taco, beef enchilada, and cheese and beef tostada. The best thing was the tostada - it had a really good cheese sauce. Really nice staff. The food was 2 stars and the typical huge menu was a lot to navigate. I had the burrito-taco combo. The only choices were beef and beef. The taco came hard shell but again, no choice was offered. The guacamole was fresh and a bit spicy. The cheese sauce (extra) was very thin. The Thursday night Margherita special (lime, medium) came on the rocks or frozen and at $4.99 was a good value. I loved the decor. The heavy chairs were carved and painted bright colors - very festive. They didn't rush us which was nice as we were getting together with family. El Nopal is a nice local choice. read more

Don't really enjoy giving negative comments, especially if the staff are polite & attentive, even if they asked the table behind me if everything was ok 4 times and only asked me once right at the end when I asked for cheque First I ordered the half chicken nachos with fresh jalapeños (see pic) too much and too salty Second I ordered the grilled tilapia tacos, first wrap I opened smelled rotten so it put me right off I had to take the tilapia out of tacos and filled instead with the chicken on the nachos. Not good, I'm English so we don't mind doing things like that, I'm afraid if you're American then you'd probably send it back, I can't blame you, I just couldn't be bothered. Two more points, the salsa served with the tacos was fresh & delicious & I could only eat two of the three tacos because portion sizes are big It was nice they gave a complimentary basket of nachos & a bottle of slasa (see pic) I'm still giving 3/5 stars because I think these guys were polite and working hard and also the prices are reasonable read more

Promptly seated and chips/salsa were delivered seconds after we sat down. Margaritas were spot on! Do yourself a favor and spring for the flour chips. Bethany is such a sleepy and peaceful little city that you wouldn't expect to find such a good combination of food and service. The food here is Mexican, rather than the reviled "Tex-Mex" made notorious by Taco Bell. Portions are ample, and the prices are right. I've sampled a good selection of their menu, and particularly enjoyed the shrimp soup and steak fajitas. They place bottles of imported Mexican hot sauce on the tables, for those who prefer their food spicier-- the green one is so good that I sought a supplier back home. The restaurant scene in Bethany is divided between "Toot Toot" and "everybody else." El Nopal became my secondary "go-to" pretty quickly. read more

Went in yesterday, 9/26, in afternoon. Hardly anyone in there, I was only person in my section, table of guys in another one. I eat there frequently, so am sure my friend had told new waiter Luis, to bring me a Coke. But the glass was down about 2 inches, and the outside of glass was damp from having Coke spilled on it, left rings on table, and took order, even before salsa and chips came. I ordered the Quesadilla Tapatia which was the special, tortillas seemed gummy this time. But the real problem is, once my food was brought? No one ever came back to see if I needed more Coke, (and remember my drink was not full when he brought it) or to bring me a check, or anything. And there were at least 5 wait staff in there, plus another who only runs register. I went to pay, still no check, and a couple were the only other people in there. Guy checking me out asked if everything was all right, and told him no. Food was good, but no one ever came back to refill my drink, or see if everything was okay or not. He had no concern whatsoever, not even I'm sorry to hear that. Won't be back ever again. And all you hear is "oh, support your Harrison County businesses. Why? To begin with, this place is taking advantage of the fact that the people out here don't have REAL MEXICAN FOOD to compare this sorry excuse for Mexican food to. Their salsa was tomato sauce with oregano NOT salsa. Their wet burrito had no cheese on it, it had some tomatoes sauce with maybe sour cream on it. With chunks of some meat inside. This is authentic crap NOT Mexican food. I'm a Mexican and I didn't expect authentic Mexican food like they claim, however I did expect Decent food. This is a typical small town Mexican place. If you don't go in with the highest expectations of authentic Mexican Cuisine, you'll really enjoy the lunch. The prices are very reasonable and the portions filling. I had a half order of shrimp nachos and was quite happy with the number and size of the shrimp. Made for a good lunch. In a town like this, it's a nice alternative to American fast food. I didn't see anyone smoking and there were no smoking signs in the place. Wife and I stopped over night at a nearby motel and spotted the full parking lot on a Sat. Night while traveling to AZ. We were ready for some SW favor. Place was filled with mixed crowd, kids, parents and grand folks like us. Staff was quick and attentive. Rooms are bright and colorful. Check out the chairs, they are pieces of art. I was passing through Bethany, MO and this restaurant was definitely the best place in that area to eat. I had chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. Very good. Only went here once, because my husband had a couple of bad meals here. I talked him into taking me right before we moved away from this area and the food was really good!! They changed their salsa, which previously was runny and flavorless. My husband was pleasantly surprised by the changes!! Ironically, while we were at the local Barber they were all talking about how bad the chips and salsa were. So they need to let people know that they have made some changes.
