I'm posting this 2 years later because this experience remains unacceptable. I brought my cat in for a routine neuter and was repeatedly told the procedure went perfectly. After payment and while preparing to leave, I was informed the surgery had gone badly, my cat had not been properly monitored, and emergency care would now be required. He was brought out visibly distressed, his lower body covered in blood, without pain medication. Jeff (the main manager) said this was because they don't check on cats after surgery. This was a deeply traumatic and avoidable situation. The lack of transparency and accountability was alarming. Since then, I've heard consistent warnings from others about this clinic claiming their pet went through a very similar situation. I'm sharing this in hopes others seriously consider the risk this clinic poses to the safety of our animals. read more

We were traveling through town when our dog injured himself jumping out of the camper. This place was awesome from the front office staff to the doctor (Dr. O). The exam was very thorough, they provided a shot/injection for immediate relief and prescriptions to help my dog with the last couple days of being in the road. They were always a good choice when my local veterinarian couldn't treat an animal, exotics or being out of town. Unfortunately, they have changed some policies and instead of only having one client fee when opening an account they are going to charge for each individual pet that I bring to them. Also if we have been fortunate enough to not need to see the veterinarian for six months next time we come in we are now a new client and again have to pay a new client fee per pet seen. Due to these changes, I can no longer recommend them to anyone. read more

Very furious made an appointment called twice to confirm early morning! They said they don't do appointments. Front desk customer service is terrible did not seem to care take your pets elsewhere. This place is absolutely phenomenal! We came in because our dog needed emergency surgery and they were so kind and attentive. They are a great place to go if you are short on funds because they offer scratch pay AND care credit as options. They were extremely helpful throughout the whole process and I especially want to thank Nurse Gina and Dr. Herod, and also Bethany in customer service! Schedule an appointment at 8am. Checked in. Apparently scheduled appointments are not applicable and it is first come first served. Even then, I checked in at 8 am, 15 mins till closing and I am 1 of 4 people left in the waiting room! My cat had a blood test on Friday and the vet said she would call me with results that afternoon. She did not call. On Monday I called and asked about it and was told the vet would call me that afternoon. No call. On Tuesday I called again and was told the vet would call that afternoon. Again, no call. The next day I emailed the clinic expressing my concerns. That all occurred three weeks ago, and I still have not been contacted by the vet. This was the first visit. Our dog had developed a bad cough the night before and we called to make an appointment and they don't take appoi tents but we could curbside checkin. We arrived and couldn't checkin. The system wouldn't let us complete it. The tech took our info and put us on the list. We sat in the parking lot with the dog in the car and waited well over two hours and never did get the dog seen. Our experience was one of extreme frustration and we're unable to get to speak with anyone to try to understand what was going and estimated times came and went 3 times. read more

A caring and compassionate team who provides excellent care for beloved pets. They consistently go over and above. They are immediately available in an emergency. When our senior dog was in the final stages of her life, she received the most loving care and they did everything they could to make her final days more comfortable. If you need an appointment good luck. You can't talk to anyone. You have to use their cumbersome portal and then you don't know if you have an appointment or not for 24 to 48 hours. How are you supposed to schedule your day like that? And getting into the walk in joke is like playing the lottery.. plus very pricey. 285.00 just to walk in first visit! read more

Awful,awful,awful. They lied about taking payments, gave me the wrong bill and by the time they admitted that they had made a massive error, the bill was even bigger due to kennel costs. I gave them permission to talk to a charity I found to help with the costs, and they refused to speak to the charity people, resulting in the funding going elsewhere. They didn't let me know about any programs available besides a credit card, I couldn't afford. They basically stole my cat and broke my heart. read more

Doctor Oehmke and his staff are beyond amazing and empathetic to their furry patients and family needs. We came home from a recent hiking trip and our beloved Zion had gotten injured. We were new patients yet they got us in immediately and took their time to really address Zion and what the issues could be. Dr. O and his team really fought for Zion for several days. They let us come in and spend almost the whole day when he was alert and not in pain to be with him. Our kids got to spend a wonderful last day with their buddy while he still could be alert to them and know they were there. We never felt rushed to make any decisions and were offered many treatment options and plans. Unfortunately he was too far gone to be saved. Thankfully Zion was never in pain, he got to keep his favorite blanket and my coat with him during his stay. The staff made sure to give him a lot of attention just like they do all their patients. Zion was always clean and comfort in all our visits. I showed up one day with our Autistic son and they let us just got back and sit next to him in the kennel. I have to say it was so clean back there and all the animals were being cared for with lots of love. I highly recommend El Paso animal hospital to anyone looking for high quality care. For the 2cd time they where directly involved in one of my cats deaths. They changed me $1700 to remove the top of her hip bone due to a degenerative bone dieses 5 years ago. After they killed one of my cats I started to go to a different vet. Just had x-rays done of my other cat. They didn't round the bone off so it ate away the muscle and remaining bone causing cancer. Here's all you need to know. I came here to try and help my cat which I thought was sick with a stomach bug. They told me she was in good shape and was ready to come home. Not even 24 hours after she got back home she passed away. No one told me that there was possibility of her dying so soon. My outside/barn cat doesn't come to the vet often and when we do we usually bring her to El Paso. When I brought her in severely lethargic, throwing up and she hadn't eaten in several days they told me they had already seen the maximum number of cats for the day when I brought her in and they wouldn't see her in the morning. Too busy! Was 2nd in line for over an hour and a half. Spent a total of 2 1/2 hours waiting to be seen and took 40 minutes to check out. I asked for first available vet, people who came in after me were seen before us and long gone. I asked twice about our long wait and they kept saying we were next. We took our 10 year old cat because she was losing hair in patches and ask them to look at her. Due to covid it was curbside. When they brought her out we took her out of her carrier and she was so out of it, she could not stand up. So we called them back and they said they would come back and get her so they kept her a few more days then released her to us bill was up to about $600 then no real answers. Come to find out they had taken it upon themselves to clean her ears with a dog only drug which had reports of bad reactions in cats. They used this on our baby and gave her a stroke, Horner's syndrome. After taking her to another vet and $300 more dollars. She was slightly better but could barely eat and one of her eyes is permanently messed up. That side of her face is like she had a stroke that's why she can't eat or see out of that side of her face. Very disappointed with Doctor O. I feel they were just padding the bill to pay for the new building. Never an apology. Never going back to El Paso. read more

Outstanding experience. I had to bring two of my dogs in.. one of which had to be put down and they made the experience as pleasant as it possibly could be. My other dog who made it through was given meds and her stitches are doing great. Previously, i was taking them to a vet that I didn't truly believe in because I didn't know who to switch over to. I cannot give El Paso a SINGLE star and feel good about it. I have worked EXTENSIVELY with animals for many years, so when a dear friend of mine said it "was time" to euthanize her very elderly dog, I was glad to be there as moral support. What I witnessed at El Paso was HORRIFYING. I have had experience in euthanasia situations, and told my friend to expect a calm, peaceful good bye. She got anything but. The first dose of medication did nothing for Sissy (my friend's dog), and the second did not either. After the poor dog was screaming in pain, it was determined that the veterinary staff had COMPLETELY MISSED HER VEIN. They tried another vein, unsuccessfully, and then decided to put a needle directly into her heart. THEY MISSED. I cannot begin to describe to you how disgusting this process was. What should have been a simple, peaceful act of kindness was turned into a session of pain and torture, during which my friend was robbed of the most precious moments of saying good bye, and Sissy was robbed of any dignity she had left. In addition to this review, I have authored a letter to the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association. I urge you to find professional pet care somewhere else, and can only hope that this poor excuse for a clinic will not survive. read more

My family has used El Paso Animal Clinic for about 17 years now and we really love it. The veterinarians are caring and compassionate and the staff is always friendly and helpful. This is a place where I feel safe with my "babies" and they will really work with you to find the best course of treatments for your animals. The vets here are all good, and you don't have to have an appointment unless you're doing a surgery. Boy does this place get busy, and it's a pretty small office so it can definitely get cramped, but I trust the doctors so it's worth the wait. Saturdays are always busy, but your best bet is to get there when they open at 8 a.m. to see a doctor quickly. They also offer emergency calls up til 11 p.m. We once had to use that for our dog, who had been hit by a car, and the vet that helped us met us at the office to help us through some difficult decisions. The wonderful thing about the vets here is that they will talk out any questions you have and really offer you a few options for treatment, instead of just assuming you want the cheapest one or instead of selling you the most expensive one just to make some money. They treat it as it should be treated -- as a medical decision. The boarding here is inexpensive, and I feel OK about leaving my pets overnight, but not great about anything longer term. The cages are small and they only let the animals out twice a day. My dog usually comes home feeling a little frazzled if he has to stay overnight, so I assume a stay any longer than that would be both uncomfortable and anxiety inducing. They do sell some pet products -- food, treats, etc., but their selection is limited and expensive. Their heartworm & flea preventatives are kind of pricey, but they do price match so you can print off proof of prices elsewhere and they'll honor that price, so that helps. I've had at least seven pets I've brought to these vets and I have never been unhappy with the quality of service or the quality of care that my pets and I receive. I don't live in Derby anymore but I will continue to drive the distance from Wichita for the care we receive. I always recommend this place to everyone who asks for a good vet in the Wichita area. read more

I run a small, dog rescue in south Wichita and we have used El Paso since 2001. They have always been courteous, direct and to the point, yet gently. Always offering different options for different situations sometimes allowing me to make a difficult decisions yet knowing that it was the best for the individual dog. When comparing prices and personalities of different vets in the area, I am always happy that we have been going to them all these years. This is not meant to put down any of the other great vets out there, but for our location and needs they fit the bill for us. That means in 19 years we have taken a minimum of 500 dogs to them for various needs, shots, small boo boos and at least three leg amputations. Always happy to visit them. read more

This is a wonderful office that cares for pets like they were their own family members. We have always found them to be responsive to our every concern. When our dog, Tascha, was ill last fall,she required a 3 day stay for IV fluids. Dr. Herrod and Oehmke both went out of their way to call us several times a day with updates. We were encouraged to come a visit anytime. When our elderly cat, Flora, became very ill it was Dr. Oehmke that helped us with several days of IV fluids and special food. We were able to take her home. But, then it became clear that she was at the end of her life....and Dr Oehmke soothed our concerns as she passed to heaven. They have the most amazing doctors and administrators! Dr O by far is most knowledgeable experienced kind compassionate Vet I have ever known! They are overwhelmingly busy every single day but this does not stop them from taking the time to give each one us personal care. I love this clinic. We have never had a bad experience or issues with our animals after being there. This clinic not only treats your animals with professional care, but they treat you with kindness. This is the only vet that I know of that will work with you on payments. They know how expensive costs for care can be and will do their best to make sure you're animal is cared for and you don't end up stressed out about how to pay for their care. We have taken our pets to El Paso for about the last 6 years. I understand a lot of people don't like the "no appointment" just walk in. But that has its advantages also. I drive from west wichita to take my dog there. They are wonderful! Always kind, courteous, and they are so sweet to my dog when she is boarded there a few times per year.
