I had the pleasure of seeing my friends perform in "Lone Star/Laundry and Bourbon"; and I also served as house manager for one performance. As house manager, I got to work with the owners, Ceil and Peter Herman. The Hermans are very dedicated to keeping their theater viable, fresh, and thriving; both in the performing arts and cultural community, and the community of Las Cruces itself. The performance of Jame's McClure's "Lone Star" and "Laundry and Bourbon", two related one-acts depicting rural life in Texas in the 1970s, was directed by W Dale Pawley, and had a fantastic cast. In "Laundry and Bourbon", Melissa Chambers was a standout as Hattie, Marjorie Brouhard was Elizabeth, and Kim Wollard was charming as Amy Lee. "Lone Star" featured great performances by Jeff Peckham as Roy, Tony Cordova as Ray, and Corey Dlask as Cletus. Staying true to McClure's script, the two plays gave a comical and bittersweet 1970s rural Texan viewpoint on a variety of topics ranging from post-traumatic stress disorder, infidelity, Vietnam, depression, alcoholism, abortion, and mah jongg. The play closed after its three week run, but I'll be back to see other outstanding performances at this intimate venue.

When we first walked in the ladies checking tickets were a little rude with how they approached us and wondered what we were doing there. As if we weren't paying customers...but we just let it slid because we assumed they were dealing with many people that night. The only down side to this theater is there is not enough restrooms. So prepare to wait in long lines during intermissions. Other than that the whole experience was swell.

It is a popular concert series, but I was surprised to find out it's been going on for 31 years, it's a true El Paso tradition! The shows start Sundays at 7pm at the Chamizal Memorial Park and they bring performers from different genres, so there's a bit of something for everyone. I stopped by for a mariachi concert that a friend invited me to, and I had a fun time, I've always liked mariachi and the band, Son de Mexico, was quite good and they were singing all the classics. It's really less about the performer than it is about enjoying a day at the park with your friends or family, the music just complements the chatting, eating, and hanging out. I recommend getting there at least half an hour before the concert to find good parking and a good spot to sit, though the park is big enough to where it doesn't feel uncomfortably crowded. Also, don't forget to bring a lawn chair, like I did. If you don't bring your own picnic there are food and drink trucks set up, and there's quite a few of them, there's even a beer cart. Good times.

The concessions offered some nice candy choices and the drink cups are nice keepsakes of your experience. We went to see Med-illusions and magic of Raze MD and I found the show itself amazingly done and the performance to be Vegas quality! Never had seen a magic show with people sawed in half before the the theatrics and performance was just amazing. What a wonderful night.

Such a cool concept, comedy at a venue near you!…read more Laughterhours Comedy puts on El Paso's largest comedy competition too and overall this years was a huge hit (so much so that I don't think they were actually prepared for how much interest there would be). Next year I expect that they'll use larger venues for the shows because two of the venues were at capacity (possibly over capacity...but you didn't hear that here). But when they're not putting on El Paso's Funniest Comedy Competition, they have weekly shows and hook-up with a few other comedy groups in the area to put on open-mics, writing shops, and more shows. There are more aspiring comedians in EP and the surrounding area than one would suspect. Check out their Facebook to stay up to date on shows and definitely catch one. Sure you're gonna see some newbies up on the stage that are trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, but there will also be seasoned vets that will have you laughing your ass off. My two fave comedians in this group are actually the faces of Laughterhours, Gibbs (the owner) and Adam. Prior to working with Laughterhours, Adam actually won EPFCC so that's saying something. And Gibbs also known as the Comagician does a show that's a cross between a magic show and a comedy show. Somehow it works when he does it...although I will say, he's a better comedian than a magician. I've caught Laughterhour shows at places like The Network, Leo's, Shamrocks, and even the Comic Strip. And tickets are usually cheap (or free if it's an open mic)! Look 'em up, it's bond to be a great night!

Wow...We had a private comedy show for a work event. This was by far the least funny comedy show…read moreI've ever seen. Trivia? Thought we paid you for comedy? We can do trivia without an unfunny comedian. All this guy did was put homemade memes up and do historical trivia. He started off with cracking jokes on the military...at a military event. We've got no problem laughing at ourselves but cracking jokes that military can't spell and are stupid when the majority of the room has at least masters degrees? Making jokes that our "butts clenched up" when he mentioned that we were prepping for deployments? Half the audience walked out. Apparently this guy forgot the first rule of public speaking is knowing your audience. He was a broken record marketing his comedy club. I wouldn't go if he paid me to. Watching paint dry might be more entertaining.
