My recent visit to the museum was to spend time in the galleries devoted to the Old Masters, a…read morecollection overwhelmingly due to the Kress donation. Kress was a discount store from many decades ago. Mr. Kress had assembled a truly monumental collection. Upon his death, paintings were given to quite a number of art museums around the country. The El Paso Museum of Art is one of them. I'm always blown away whenever I see the paintings donated by Kress in various museums that I've visited. I think that this museum received an especially vigorous selection and so many of the works on display seem so fresh and bright. These aren't lesser works by iconic artists, either. These are amazing and the collection alone make this museum a must-see. My favorite work on display is Vincenzo Catena's 'Portrait of a Woman', an oil on canvas work from about 1520-25; oil on canvas. The young woman staring directly at the viewer looks quite modern-day as if she's posing for a selfie to show off her finery; and, what finery it is: red velvet and fur with a large-jeweled broach. This is where Catena is also showing off: his skill in making the velvet and fur seem so real. This is quite the lush painting. I was also sure to visit a selection of paintings on the first level that presented works by local students. My favorite was Zoey Odette Valles' 'Tumbled Away, an acrylic on canvas piece that seemed ready for the permanent collection. Well done, Zoey! Some museums are hindered by their spaces. This museum falls into that category. This is an overhauled Greyhound bus station that I remember using years ago when I'd travel with a little backpack across the country. The space works as well as they can make it work and the engagement with the local community is truly impressive. However, if this museum's collection were in a truly dedicated space, people would trek here just for the art.

Had an opportunity to see the El Paso Symphony Orchestra this month at the Plaza Theatre and it was…read moresuch a great date night. The symphony had about 80 members who made up the orchestra from harpists to cellists. It was so refreshing to see El Paso and so many El Pasoans really lean into the arts. They did a themed night highlighting Space Odyssey featuring scores from different movies. My fave part was the live music in conjunction with the video visuals and it was just so neat to see it come to life. For this particular experience, they had the UTEP choir there and they sang live within a certain section which really made it immersive. It was just such a moment that I will treasure. I'll definitely be back to see them in action!

Partnership with Promusica…read more With an amazing pianist Awadagin who played Ludwig Van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 37, C minor. His approach to the clavier was magical with gentle and floating fingers. The Piano Concerto No. 3 was absolutely amazing. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55, E-flat Major, posed a hefty second half of the concert. Nathan Black explained ahead of time the connection the piece had to Napoleon Bonaparte - Beethoven was a political fan of the man until he proclaimed himself emperor of France. Audiences could hear the triumph and victory in the piece, particularly with the return of the initial theme. Attended Bark at the Park at Southwest University Stadium for a Chihuahuas game for the first time,…read moreand we had an amazing experience! We brought my wife, our two small dogs, and our 11-month-old baby, and the entire visit exceeded expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly, polite, and courteous from the moment we arrived. The facilities were very clean and well-maintained, which made the experience even more enjoyable. One thing that really stood out was the nursing room with A/C -- it was perfect for when our baby started getting too warm. Snack prices were reasonable, and there were tons of great options to choose from. The water park area was also a huge hit and a great way to cool down, especially during the warmer weather. Overall, we had a fantastic family-friendly experience and highly recommend attending, especially for Bark at the Park. We'll definitely be back!

Great experience at Southwest University Stadium…read more We dropped in for a Chihuahua 's game. The line started up at 5pm for 6:35 game. They don't allow items inside the stadium, so check what you can bring on their website before you go Parking is available, but we parked at UTEP and took the EP Streetcar in. We got our tickets online, but you could get them at the box office. Look for discounted tickets! There are plenty of free gifts and theme nights. We enjoyed the fireworks! They have plenty of food inside. From hot dogs, nachos, frutas locas, kettle corn and vendors like noodles, pizza, etc. Plenty of beers. The stadium is kid friendly, and there is Chico way...out in the outfield with a splash pad and the lawn. Authentic Chihui gear is available here...it isn't cheap, but it's available to support your team. It was fun, and we will be back plenty of times this season to support our Chihuahuas.

We're living in a recession so I'm not being cheap, I'm being practical. Every last Saturday of the month, the Downtown Melt takes place. It's basically a crawl, but every stop knows you're coming and gives you either free wine, liquor, craft beer or discounts on a meal. The stops are all at local shops, restaurants and cafes so you get to do a little bit of eating, a little bit of drinking and a little bit of shopping. All things I love to do [in moderation]. The route changes every month, but a map comes out a couple of weeks before with times and what freebie is at each place. It was easy to book online and reserved for two. We used the "waze app" to get there, and we had a hard time finding the location but made it five minutes later. It was busy, but we had a fantastic time. It is a lovely activity, and I highly recommend it. My only complaint is that The painting was supposed to be of the woods with half a tree trunk and half a heart. This way, being a Valentine/Galentines event, the other attendee would make the other half, creating a whole trunk with a whole heart; this didn't happen. We both made our own. Either way, we had a good time. Nice activity for couples and dates or even groups.

The Wise Theatre is a great place to catch some awesome plays casted by local UTEP flavor and…read morenational flavor as well. The venue is small (200 or so seats) so you feel like you're really in the mix of things. Plus tickets can range from a couple of dollars to, at most, twenty dollars! So a great deal all around to enjoy some live theater. Overall, don't expect broadway productions but do expect to have a great time enjoying some local flavor showing off some excellent, dedicated work!
