We stayed in the El Patio Motel in Key West based on an article in the New York Times for the "Frugal Traveler" (dated 2004, but still relevant for those not looking to spend $1,000 a night on a hotel in the high season of January through March). I love the look of the hotel exterior which harkens back to an old Florida style of the 1950s and 1960s. The front desk staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the rooms are quite spacious, there are bikes available to rent on the premises, and there is a pool. Though most of Old Key West is quite walkable (it's really just a 1.5 mile stretch down Duval Street), the El Patio is on the outskirts. It's about a five-to-tend minute walk to the southern most part of the island where you can pick up Duval Street and can then head into town. But it is very close to The Lobster Shack (see separate review for some awesome lobster rolls). While everything was very functional and practical, and the price did meet the "frugal" qualification, I think I'd try to stay more in town on my next visit. The rooms are very basic and spartan, and we did have a leakage issue with the mini fridge which maintenance did quickly resolve. The bathrooms are tiny and the water pressure is slow, but the beds are comfortable and the AC is cranking. Also, the pool is not heated. Overall, our visit worked well for a one night stay, but next time I'd like to try a B&B in the heart of the action. read more

I had a nice stay at El Patio Motel. I liked the look of the place-old school Florida vibes. It's located in a quiet neighborhood of Key West, but easily walkable to Duval St and all the touristy stuff. We were a group of 4 and the room suited us just fine. It's not fancy, but we were barely in our room, so the minimalism of the room was totally ok for us. It was affordable, clean, and had a mini fridge, 3 important things for me. The motel has a rooftop terrace with lounge chairs and a pool. There's also free parking. I would definitely stay at El Patio Motel on future Key West visits. read more

The staff is terrible! George ( some sort of manager) has been given authority to judge you...if he feels you need to go...then you will be asked to leave! With zero cause! You can ignore the 24hr surveillance signs....as there is no surveillance! lol Which is a problem when George comes around pointing fingers!!! The room I booked....was NOT the room I was put in!! The decor seemed quaint at first....then quickly realized that updates have not been done on anything! Especially mattresses and pillows! The beds were horrible!! The toilet was stopped up when we got up the first morning...we had to sit and watch maintenance trapse in and out of the room for over an hour before we were able to shower and go on about our day! NO APOLOGIES !!! And the room was not cleaned afterwards!!! Just sux to be us!!!! There is a small refrigerator.....nothing else!! You'll have to walk for coffee in the morning! Planning a trip to Key West, Florida for the first time.....I was shocked how expensive hotels were. For a weekend evening in season (mid November), $250 was the average rate per night for both Friday and Saturday. But if you're willing to pay $250, you can have your choice of places to stay....any upscale hotel or motel in the heart of downtown Key West. After researching availability for multiple weekends and trying to find prices for under the standard $250, I came across El Patio Motel. Finally I said to myself....El Patio Motel for $175 per night....what a bargain! I couldn't believe my good fortune. The only criteria I wanted was that it was centrally located. And it was...all within walking distance from the highlights of Key West. I arrived Friday morning and although they wouldn't let me check in early, I was allowed to park at the motel for the day. (Originally I had feared parking would be difficult by the downtown area) And from El Patio Motel, I had a walking itinerary planned exploring Key West for the remainder of the day. From the motel, it was 0.5 mile to Southernmost Point, then 0.4 mile to Ernest Hemingway House and Key West Lighthouse, 0.3 mile to Duval Street, another 0.6 to Mallory Square and the pier area to catch any water activities you may do for the day (we did parasailing just down the street from Mallory Square) and if you're interested 0.5 mile to Harry Truman's little White House. In all we covered a 3 mile radius before heading back to the motel to check in and shower up before dinner. El Patio Motel was just ok. It's a little run down and our motel room could have used a makeover. I didn't mind the place being outdated. Ultimately I'm there to see Key West and we were only putting our heads down to rest at night. That's why price was important as we were barely spending any time at the motel. Both mornings we went out for breakfast so I don't know if there's anything offered, but we were content finding a restaurant to eat out at. Also for dinner, instead of walking back to Duval Street, we took a Lyft ride from El Patio Motel which cost $10 each way but was worthwhile after doing lots of running around during the day. So if you're not too particular about where you stay in Key West, I'd recommend El Patio Motel. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done. It will probably be one of the cheaper places you'll find while most importantly being near the Key West attractions. read more

This is a very intimate little simple motel Not a lot of thrills and chills and very awful beds and pillows. We woke up with backaches every morning for five days we were there and couldn't wait to get back to our beds in pillows. we like the salt water pool except that it closed at seven instead of nine when it could easily be open until nine. And we like the rooftop deck and viewing the beautiful full moon up there. We came there for a wedding and because it was so hot and humid we didn't do much else. Key west it's not my particular thing but the motel was very pleasant except for the beds. read more

Budget friendly, user friendly - staff are awesome and go out of the way to make the stay simply wonderful! Bike seat needed adjusting and presto it was done the next time I got on the bike. Motel is planted in the middle of a really cool neighborhood - super close to neighborhood Cuban restaurant El Siboney, state park, and downtown partyville area. Bicycle rental was such a luxury - very comfortable single speed bike. Frig in room was just the right size. Screened windows and nice air conditioning along with a ceiling fan. Even the housekeeper was a joy. Will definitely return. read more

This hotel was so charming, and the staff was incredibly friendly! The rooms are definitely no-frills (as most small inns/motels/b&bs in KW are) but omg this place is CLEAN! Located in a very safe area, close to all the action/attractions. We stayed in a queen room - it was definitely small, but we spent most of our time outside of the hotel anyway, so we didn't mind. AC worked wonderfully, and was very easy to turn on & off. As for the amenities: There are bikes available to rent for your entire stay (at a great price, too!) and plenty of parking, which is included in the room rate. Small refrigerator in-room. Vending machine by the office and close to a CVS for all your other needs. The pool is very cute and clean, staff brought us pool towels from inside the office when they saw us jump in. There is an adorable rooftop patio to lay back and admire the stars at night. I would definitely stay here again! read more

I'm afraid I've grownup. Back in the day, I was just fine staying at a cheap motel and even sharing a room meant for two with seven friends. After all, we'd stay out all day and night and just needed a place to pass out (ya know, because we were so tired). Times have changed though and these days, I'm looking for a place I can feel at ease sleeping with the comforter at, taking an afternoon nap in and simply, hanging out. As others have mentioned, the rooms here are out of date, as is the look of the whole place. I didn't mind that so much as the still very uncomfortable bed (we slept with one flimsy sheet the whole time), the toilet that seemed to never really want to flush, and the wifi that was available but never really worked. The good? The pool sufficed for laying out for a little bit, it was in a good location (about a 15 min walk to the Southernmost Point and Duval Street), and the management seemed friendly enough. Heck, they even had a decent TV in the room. We paid about $220/night during high season and I can confidently say I would never pay that price again or encourage anyone else to. It could work for someone planning on staying out ALL day long and getting wasted to the point where the linoleum floor would suffice as bedding, but that's simply not me... anymore. read more

I didn't expect much from El Patio, considering it was just the cheapest I could find (although still not particularly cheap for the weekend we wanted, $240/night after tax). Whoever it was that posted two photos of a roach on the shower curtain certainly seemed to make a big deal about it. Hey, buddy. Welcome to Florida. Those things could get into a vacuum-sealed bag without breaking the seal, if they tried hard enough. At any rate, we saw zero roaches (or bugs of any kind, for that matter) in or around our room all weekend, so the entomophobic can rest easy that roaches are probably not nearly as common as Picture Guy would have you believe. I really like the old architecture of the place, and the center garden is pretty cool. Up on the roof there's a big deck with a number of lounge chairs and tables. It seems that the tile in the rooms is original, and the air conditioner worked great. There's a TV in the corner, almost as an afterthought, because I'm sure no one actually uses it. Our room on the second floor was surprisingly spacious. We didn't bother with the wifi while we were there, but contrary to what another reviewer mentioned, it's not "weak". It's just not meant to be accessed from in the rooms. The sign at the front desk states that the wifi is available in the common areas of the hotel. As far as location is concerned, it's a few minute walk to the Southernmost Point. Maybe a 25 minute walk to Mallory Square, and probably about a 15 minute walk to the "party section" of Duval. If you want to cut down on those times, El Patio will rent you a bicycle for $16 for the first 24 hrs, and $12 for each additional 24 hrs. The location is great -- far enough from the bars to be quiet, but close enough to walk to many destinations. read more

Considering where it is, reasonably close to Duval but at the South end, where less is going on, it's less expensive than most. I'm not too sure that it's meant to be retro. It's old. It is clean. However, I knew it wouldn't go well when there was no coffee maker in room. I just expect that from your most basic Motel 6. It's standard. Little things like that, or towels by the pool. Or that the pool should be swept. The bed is amongst the worst I've slept in. You know. You hear the weak springs creaking every time you move and feel them through the thin bedding. Just put some coffee in the office in the morning. When I asked, the girl says, "Down at Ana's at the Cuban grocery." Reeeaaallyy? For $149/night you can't brew a little coffee in the office? read more

After looking at the photos online, I had reservations about staying here. But I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. Everyone that worked there was very nice. The rooms, although outdated, were clean. It's bare bones: no hairdryer, coffee maker,etc., just a mini fridge. But how much time do you actually spend in your room? The pool is small but adorable. There is a great space on the third floor for lounging. The beds were comfortable. It was off the beaten path, but just like anything on the Keys, it's a quick walk to the beach and Duval St. If I were to go back, I would definitely do a repeat visit! read more

I didn't get to stay here as my traveling companions and I had to cancel because of Covid and had to cancel our travel plans to Florida. We called 13 days before our reservation and we're told that they would not refund our deposit as their policy was 14 days. Perfect location and great rooftop patio. SOOOOO OUT DATED.. The floors in the rooms were dirty. Our room was a 2 "bedroom". There was only one AC unit which was a window AC. The AC was in the one room, and the other room was SO HOT because the AC didn't blow all the way into the other room. The pool was tiny, and the pool area was tiny. 5 people in the pool area, and it feels crowded. Also, the rooms were very overpriced for the out dated, dirty floor, window AC unit rooms. read more

El Patio is a nice, peaceful place on the south end of Key West. They are affordable, and this is a great place if you want a little space from Duval street. They have brand new bikes and an awesome upstairs patio area above the rooms. Close to the beach; also a great, friendly staff. Great little place! I'm really, REALLY picky when it comes to where I stay. I'm a stickler for comfort and cleanliness to the point that I'd rather sleep in my car if I can't find a place that's clean. This place IS clean. They have the best housekeeping staff. When you walk in your room, it might seem a bit dingy - it's just original, not dirty at all. Behind the bed, on the floor, there wasn't a trace of dust. The bathrooms all have original tile - and BRIGHT white, clean grout. I know how hard it is to keep it that clean! The place is really pretty too. Neat original architecture and a beautiful, lush courtyard. The pool is fabulous and just right. My sister lives in Key West, and I don't think I'll be staying at her house ever again. I stayed here during Hemingway Days 2010. The staff was very helpful with our last minute booking, and the price was right ($99/night). The location is nice, but it is quite a bit of a walk to the restaurants and bars on Duval, so I recommend renting bikes to get around. After walking everywhere on Saturday, we decided to bike on Sunday instead. Made it much easier to get around. The motel and rooms are right out of the 1960s, with jalousie windows and all. The pool area is small but really nice, and the sun deck is a great place to hang out and have a drink in the late afternoon. For the price, I thought it was a great place to stay and experience Key West. read more

This was one of the only affordable places I could find to stay on Key West. We paid $240 a night for a room with two beds (there were only two of us but we like to be comfy and not squeezed into a tiny bed). The only reason they can get this kind of money from folks to stay here is the location. Don't expect much. The pros: The place is indeed clean, although really run down and dingy, and the staff was friendly enough when I dealt with them. Very nice interior area with plants, fountain, etc. Close enough to walk to Duval St., beaches, Southernmost point, etc. A few nice little restaurants not too far away. They also don't let anyone under 28 stay there so it's not a party-like hotel which is loud. Was pretty peaceful most of the time. Fridge in room was a nice bonus. The cons: I understand that this is an older motel and I do like the kitschy, retro appeal. I'm not really that hard to please but this place needs some major updating. The furniture (including the beds) is very old. No curtains on the windows (no sleeping in), no fan in the bathroom, old towels, of which we only got two. No little amenities that you expect in a hotel like an alarm clock, scratch paper and pen (I know it's nitpicky but I expect that stuff, especially at over $200 a night). The walls are also thin. If I had it to do over again, I would have just spent more to stay at a B&B like Pearl's. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. We had a hard time finding a room that would sleep more than 2 people fairly last minute under $200 bucks....lo and behold El Patio emailed us back saying they had one room left for $108/night + taxes (=$120). El Patio is a two story building (with a roof top sun bathing/hang out area) with what looked like about 40 rooms. The beds were queen and each (clean) room had a private bathroom - granted it was nothing spectacular. The showers had really poor water pressure and the toilets seats did not have a lid (and without a vanity, there was no place to put toiletry bags!). There was a nice little closet, flat screen tv and dresser/mirror outside the bathroom plus a mini fridge (no microwave). There was a pool, but we didn't check it out. We did rent bikes for $15/24 hrs. We also got some great recommendations for places to visit/snorkel from the girl working. We were able to ride our bikes (and then later, walk) everywhere on our 'to see' list - fort zachary taylor, southern most point, mallory square, MM 0, duval street, etc. I highly recommend renting bikes when touring Key West. I'd probably stay here again if I had to, but there are cuter places to stay. However, this place fit our budget, time schedule and sleep number! read more

I used to work in the hotel industry and I can be extremely snobby about where I stay as a result. Admittedly, this place didn't look at all like the place I usually stay, and on our way there, I told my husband "I bet our motel is gonna be nasty." It wasn't. It was great. The staff is very friendly. Our room was spotless. The flora on the patio is so beautiful. It was a very peaceful place at night. That said, the only real problem is the walls seem to be paper thin. It's in a relatively residential area, so you're going to hear a lot of traffic - especially on trash day. It's loud and it goes on for hours, so don't expect to sleep in unless you have a fan or ear plugs. I can't comment on the pool - we were so busy running around that we never got a chance to get in! It's a pretty easy walk to most of the tourist locations and not a far drive away from that. read more
