This was one of the best I had the chance of finding in Spain, you literally have to stop here. As a necessity in Spain, you have to order the Jamon Iberia and Sangria, both of which are amazing here. But they have even more amazing dishes like their grilled baby squid and especially the prawns in olive oil, you won't be disappointed. The owner was nice, he came to our table with every dish and showed us how to eat it, and he is also a sport medicine physician so I think he knows this stuff is good for you!

Close to the Joaquin train station in Valencia, you'll find a unique little restaurant called El Pederniz, specializing in Mediterranean tapas and fresh seafood from northern Spain. El Pederniz has their own wine cellar, which houses approximately one hundred different types of wine, both regional and foreign, as well as a variety of whiskey and gin. This is one restaurant that really raises the bar as far as hospitality goes, as the staff is professional and accommodating, speaking five different languages and operating for large groups any day of the week. I met up with a good friend at El Pederniz for lunch, and we were immediately impressed with the restaurant's atmosphere. We were instantly welcomed, which made a great first impression to see smiling, friendly faces. The restaurant's design takes inspiration from the wine cellar, with earthy, natural hues and antique wine crates and vintage labels as decorations. The brick walls highlight by curtains, and the shades of chocolate, sienna, and cream are relaxing. We ordered croquettes to start, and they were some of the best I've ever had. Made from prawn, spinach, rice, and sausage, they were fried to just the right crispiness. We also shared fresh grilled baby squid, which had been charred on the grill just long enough. Opting for something completely different, we tried morteruelo, which is a pate-like stew of different game, including partridge quail, wild rabbit, wild chicken, acorn ham, and foie mixed with breadcrumbs, olive oil and spices. Our next tapas was onions stuffed with tuna in cider and tomato sauce. Perfect balance of acidity and freshness, with just the right amount of sweetness from the onions. I loved the warm legume dish of cooked white beans with sausage stew. It was spicy and creamy, and hit the spot on a cooler afternoon. This is pure comfort food, Spanish style. My friend kept commenting on how delicious the seafood paella was, and said she'd come back just for that alone. Dessert was a Manchego cheese flan, the great international dessert with a Spanish twist, and it lived up to its reputation!

El Perderniz is located in a bit dodgy neighbourhood and the décor of the restaurant is nothing special. But the kindness of the owner makes up for that, you immediately are greeted by the owner who speaks many languages. Also the menu is in different languages (even Dutch). The owner is very kind advising on the menu. Although he told us that 3 dishes might not be enough, we chose a 4th which was actually to much for us. They have a lot of different wines, but if you just want a glass there is no choice, just the house wine. The menu is very big, all Spanish food. The food did not match up my estimation, my expectations were high. We had: grilled scallops which were very fresh and good, Croquets good, morteruelo a very typical dish from Cuenca, we had half a portion and it was more than enough. By this time we had enough, we could have had dessert, but we there was still 1 plate coming which should not have ordered. The stuffed Quail is the specialty of the house, that´s why we ordered it. The quail was nice but it was not stuffed, there was a huge layer of foie on top of it, too heavy for us (see picture) This dish might have been nice on a cold winter day, but not on a sunny 35 degrees day. The owner invited us to have a digestive, orujo de hierbas from Galicia. The restaurant does not belong in the top best restaurants from Valencia, but it has it´s charm and it is worth a visit. Hope that they will improve the presentation of the dishes.

Every day, the chef at Palao Bistrot selects fresh raw ingredients from the market, creating a menu that reflects the beauty and range of the Valencia garden. My friend and I ate at Palao Bistrot for dinner, and were more than satisfied with our experience. The service was great, as everyone was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant design is contemporary yet inviting, with warm wall colors and tall wood tables that create an intimate atmosphere. We started with the fish of the day - salmon - and shared an order of salmon sashimi, which was sliced just right, getting enough of the raw flavor in each piece. The fish was so fresh, tasting like it was just caught that day. This dish shows how Palao Bistrot stays true to its concept of only using the freshest ingredients. My friend loved her main course of vitello tonnato, which was sliced veal covered in a creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce flavored with tuna. She raved about the sauce, saying the tuna flavor was not overpowering but instead enhanced the taste of the meat. I opted for French duck thigh confit, with potatoes baked with thyme. Expertly seasoned, this dish would make any renown French chef proud. The potatoes were tender and not mushy, and the duck was juicy. We both enjoyed the oven baked crespella with ragu sauce, which was savory and cooked to perfection. Dinner was completed with my first ever bonet, a dessert from the Piedmonte region of Italy, it was chocolatey perfection. I highly recommend Palao Bistrot for anyone looking for a mix of culinary influences. From the service to the atmosphere, we loved everything about the restaurant, especially the delicious food!

This was not a good realization since we had become accustomed to the slow pace style of dining and had also arrived about 15 minutes late. We came to enjoy dinner and conversation with some friends we met in the area and the hurried service kinda spoiled that experience. We hurried to rush after being scolded by our server who made it clear that she could not wait any longer for us to decide. I had hoped to order the tasting menu but we instead chose to order one tapa each. We ordered the octopus, corn fritters, ceviche, and fried prawns. All of the food was very good. We ordered two desserts as well. The doughnut and dulce de leche dessert which were both fabulous. If I had to make my decision based on solely the food, I would say go here without a doubt. The food and the ambiance are amazing. But if you want to relax, eat and hang out with friends this may not be the place for you; not unless you have plans to go somewhere else afterward.
