Ambiance was more of an upscale vibe! Clean, great music, upbeat! Service was quick & snappy! Loved the efficiency! Salsa was fresh and the chips were crispy, warm, & delectable. Some of the best we've had! Entrees were solid! Wish they had more meat, and that there was a bit more flavor to the fajitas, rice, & beans. It was a tad plain! B and myself here for lunch today. After seeing large Pablano chilis yesterday another same name location, wanted to check here. Sure enough, same here. Really good too. The Pablanos have more flavor...to me. B had taco salad and was larger/much better here than other location had. Lots chicken in also. Mex Coke here. Required drink any good Mex food stop. Stopped here when passing through Kearney. The vegetarian options were limited. I ordered a bean enchilada and a spinach mushroom quesadilla. The enchilada was meh but edible. The quesadilla smelled weird (mildly fishy???) and was GLOSSY with grease. (See photo.) I told the waiter and he said, "okay." I couldn't eat it. He did remove it from my bill, which I appreciated and that is the only reason I added another star. read more

Wow lived around the corner for 3 years and took wife for birthday, what a surprise so good very impressed

I was not impressed with this restaurant and wish I would have gone somewhere else for dinner. What I was looking forward to coming here was a cheap smothered burrito for under $10. Well, there isn't a whole lot on the menu for that price, plus the dishes are much smaller than the burritos I have had at other mexican restaurants. The value here was non-existent and the service was not good at all. I think our waiter was high with how red and heavy his eyes were. Next time I'm in the area I'm going to the Culver's across the street. read more

Oh my...a favorite for locals and a great place to bring out of town guests. Quick service, large menu selection. Plenty of seating.

Sadly mediocre. Nothing more than strip-mall Mexican food. I got one of the enchilada plates and they were sitting in a pool of watery juice that from the start made them unappetizing. Flavors were OK, but nothing that over came the poor plating. Adding to a ho-hum evening, the wait staff appeared to want to be anywhere but on the job. Nothing here to return for. read more

Passing through Kearney, we found this place chasing down a restaurant that was rated higher. It was clear that this was more worth trying and it exceeded expectations! I know Mexican food (in all it's complexity) and this is wonderful and inexpensive. It earns a 5 because it excels in being what a Mexican restaurant of this type should be. My shrimp tacos were delicious, the guacamole enjoyable, the chips made on site and the margaritas generous. read more

This is our favorite Mexican place in town. Margaritas are awesome, food is very good, and the salsa is also good and the tortilla chips are always warm and fresh! Enchiladas Jalisco and the Polo Tequila are two of my favorites. You won't be disappointed read more

The food was not at all what I was expecting, my chimichanga was full of onions and tomatoes and very little beef pieces. The burrito supreme was soggy and the beef was not seasoned right. The only thing we really liked were the drinks. The service was not bad but the food was definitely not worth what we paid for. The rice was also not very good, it was almost chewy and the beans tasted as if they were rancid. Next time I'm going McDonald's. read more

Had dinner here last night with a guest. The main Gatorade were good, the carnitas dinner was great and the salsa was really good. I would say this place is just above average when it comes to Mexican joints in Nebraska. They do, however, have an extensive selection of top shelf Tequila! read more

Food is overpriced and not that good. Not authentic at all. The only good thing about this place are their margaronas. Staff are very dull, not attentive, and take FOREVER to do anything. Did I say they were dull? It's obvious they hate their job and it just looks bad. The "carne asada" is the most decent thing on their menu, but way too expensive for what you get. read more

Food is very good, every time!, and we are here once every week or two. I've never been to Mexico, so is it real or TexMex? I don't know, but it's damn tasty! Margaritas here are the best I've ever had, perfect amount of tequila and great consistency. Also the salsa I love as well, not too hot, but a good bite and great taste and texture. My only reason for leaving off the fifth star is depending on the waitstaff, some experiences are better than others when here. The best Mexican restaurant in Kearney in my opinion. read more

Whoever says this place doesn't give enough food needs to reassess their food proportions. The food was plentiful for $8 a platter and the margaritas delicious and effective. I would highly recommend this restaurant as it was a great value and the staff was AWESOME read more

Came here for a 21st party with a group of 12 people and the waiter was not prepared to take a large order. Came back to our table 4 times to confirm what we ordered and took 40 mins to input our order into the system to be cooked. I typically like this place but with tonight's service I'm not sure I'll be coming back. I understand large groups can be a hassle but we called ahead so they knew a big group was coming and I have never had someone have to return to the table FOUR times to confirm orders. read more

Got into Kearney at 9pm on a Sunday night on a drive from Chicago to Denver, a frequent drive for us. Our usual options were closed, so I found El Portrero by Google search. It's huge and the staff were very nice, although we decided just to get takeout to hotel after 9 hours in the car. Shared the carne asada tacos and al pastor tacos. Came with charro beans (obviously someone's mom's recipe with bacon in them!), chips and 3 different salsas. Everything was awesome, looking forward to eat in and try the margaritas and other menu items (although the al pastor will be had again!) read more

Gluten free- I called and spoke with manager, he was extremely helpful. The following he confirmed gluten free : ground beef, shredded chicken, corn tortillas, corn tortillas chips, refried beans and rice. Food is excellent but I knew it would be as I frequent the one in Lincoln regularly. If you have questions make sure to speak with manager. Most of the wait staff do not know what gluten free is. read more

I was really disappointed. I had high hopes for this place as it was recommended to us. There was so much wrong with our visit. Chips tasted burnt, ordered beans and got rice, rice was very, very bland, the beans resembled cream of mushroom soup, beer had a horrible after-taste, prices are too high, staff was slow, and all three of us were up in the middle of the night with indigestion. This is probably the best Mexican food in Kearney. That said, it is still not very good. The food here can be really good. That is, when you actually get what you wanted, which is rarely. The problem here is the wait staff changes weekly. I've been here a lot of times and usually never see the same server after the initial visit. The only person who seems to remain is the manager, who is inept, inattentive and disrespectful to customers. Due to massive turnover, the waitstaff are never familiar with the menu and have great difficulty in getting anything to you as you ordered it. The language barrier isn't the problem, it's the complete lack of attentiveness of the staff and the poor management. read more
