Mendieta's - Real Mexico menu

Mendieta's is a 10-star caterer, but since Yelp will only let me post 5 stars, this will have to…read moredo. I recently took my entire family to Mexico for me and my husband's wedding, and 22 of us stayed in a beautiful villa and had Mendieta's recommended to us for catering Thanksgiving dinner. Our concierge gave us a list of 3-4 catered, but highly recommended Mendieta's, so we booked them. I had no idea just how big of a treat it would be to have Chef Maria, her husband and her team prepare our holiday dinner. I thought it would just be the food but it was so much more! They brought beautiful, Mexican table decor and place settings to make the dinner feel like a lush event. The details were everything! I also gave them a list of food allergies/restrictions and I was so glad that they happily accommodated all of them! And the food still tasted amazing! Now, on to the food -- simply incredible and delicious! They prepared it at our villa (it 'took them only 2 hours to get food on the table, which is amazing for the number of people we had!). We had their Real Mexican menu, which was family style, and included elote (corn), braised beef tacos, fish and rice, guacamole, salsas, and several other items that tasted delicious! A big plus for me was how pleasant and loving Chef Maria and the entire Mendieta's team was. They served us dinner, poured the wine we bought at the local store (all throughout the night), and gave us shots to celebrate the festive occasion! They also arranged the dining room tables and used tables from other parts of the house to set everything up so that all 22 of us could eat together. Man, what a treat! Their pricing is SO reasonable, and they also have menus for kids, as well as discounted prices of the adult menu for children. I'm OVER THE MOON with them and will definitely be back to have them cater our next trip to Mexico! Last thing - Chef Maria helped me pick the menu and was so lovely in all of our texts to help me mommy arrange everything and get the final details done. That was a huge relief since our wedding was that same weekend and my head couldn't take anymore planning! They worked so hard and were such great people...I couldn't have asked for more. My friends who stopped by for dinner said it was their favorite part of the entire trip - other than our wedding. Thank you Mendieta's!!!

We had the Mexican experience of 11 dishes - all amazing but the highlights are Tinga de Pollo and Albondigas. They set up the table beautifully as if Four Seasons was hosting Cinco de Mayo. Lastly, the Mexican/Romanian couple is charming and interesting. They are simply delightful. An experience we will never forget and will seek to repeat when we return to Cancun.

Good selection of fruits and vegetables - we love the guavas, mangos, and carrots the most! They taste so fresh and more flavorful than what we get in the US. Decent selection of meat, dairy, snacks, cereal, etc too! They have a bakery (with fresh tortillas), pharmacy, a touristy area (bathing suits, shirts, souvenirs, etc), and an area that has prepped food items. They also have a decent alcohol/beer area. Prices are way better than what they charge at the hotel (though you're likely paying for convenience there). Highly recommend this treat to pick up items! This is on the top floor of a shopping mall, though the mall itself has few store these days.

It's located in a shopping mall that seems to be having some occupancy issues, but has an absolutely beautiful atrium, with a decorated dome, fountains- It's amazing! The shopping is a bit rough- it's not exactly the cheapest place to shop in Mexico. It's not the most expensive- that honor seems to belong to the other grocery up the road a mile or two and the Cancun Pointe. The aisles are a bit jammed together, and they certainly cater to the gringo tourista. They have new swimsuits, hats, sunglasses, plenty of cerveza, tequila, mixers, and food. A bakery section offers pan dulces and a variety of things to make sandwiches with. There's a bunch of bottled water, and everything you need to feel at home. I kinda don't care for how they seem to organize this place- whatever they're doing, I haven't figured it out yet. The prices were okay, the selection okay. Okay!

Porfirio's - Bone marrow

Dinner in the cancun strip…read more We decided to pick Porfirio's for the evening from all of the restaurants outside of the all inclusive resorts. I took some notes and this is what I thought of the dishes. Xoajacan Imoladas - The mole is perfection. The flautas, superb. Everything in this plate is a symphony of what I would expect from Xoajaca. 9.5/10 Barbacoa Bonemarrow - Barcacoa is on point. The Marrow is Sublime. Together with the accompaniments is superb. I dream of Marrow everyday. This is a 10/10 Yellow fin Tosatadas - Superb!!! One of the best tostadas I have ever had. The microgreens, the sauce and the square Tostada works well all together. 8.8/10 Salmon - Cooked perfectly. The corn is a great accompaniment. The fish is impeccably seasoned. This dish is heaven sent with a 9.8/10 Grilled Octopus - Grilled perfectly, I can tell by the texture. The mash is superb, they used margarine instead of butter and I absolutely love the contrast from the traditional mash. 9.8/10 Mexican Rice - Its pretty good. It does have a nice seafoodish finish. The pepper was actually spicy. Nice and pleasant rice dish. 8/10 Charred Avocado Salad - Grilled avocado is a bit of a wash. It did make it look good on the plate. The dressing is a little weak. Needs a little more zip, some citrus or vinegar would give this salad some justice. Its a little uninspired 7/10 Service is impeccable and attentive and the atmosphere is lovely.

Anyway: the food, presentation of the dishes itself, and the overall vibe: 4/5. My favorite dish was definitely the steak. The bone marrow is better off being plain without all the stuff they put on top. The steak itself was perfectly cooked & seasoned. I should've took more pictures of the food but whatever- the mango tuna thing with avocado was delicious. Very mango forward. Great alongside some salsa as well. The octopus: OK enough, slightly overcooked. Chewy. Chicharron guac was yum. Our server was so sweet in the beginning but had an attitude after getting tipped 25% LOL other than that, great experience :)
